4.Every day we are exposed to images,videos,music and news.In this age of visual and aural hyper-stimulation (视听刺激),the medium of radio is making a great comeback.
"We're at the beginning of a golden age of audio,"said US-based podcaster Alex Blumberg in an article in The Sydney Morning Herald.In the last month alone,15percent of US adults listened to a radio podcast (播客).These statistics, released by Edison
Research, show the successful evolution of traditional radio broadcasts to the present day's digital podcast format (格式).The term"podcast"was invented in 2004,but the trend only started gaining mainstream popularity in recent years. With the sharp increase in consumer demand for smartphones and tablets, podcast sales have jumped.
The appeal of the podcast partly lies in its multiplatform delivery and on-demand capabilities (功能).You can listen during those extra minutes of the day when you're walking to the shops,waiting in a queue or riding the subway.Similar to television shows,podcasts are generally free to download and most offer new content every week.
Donna Jackson,22,Sydney University media graduate,listens to podcasts two or three times a week, via iTunes."I listen while I'm wandering around the house doing something else. It makes completing a boring task much more enjoyable…And it's an easy way of keeping in touch with what's going on in the rest of the world,"she said,"I mainly listen to BBC podcasts, but recently I've also been listening to This American Life and Serial. They have a special skill to really draw you in."
Unlike television and music, the audio format has the potential to create a deep impression on readers.Blumberg says this owes to the podcast's ability"to create close relationship and emotional connection."Sydney University undergraduate Hazel Proust,majoring in social work and arts,agrees."When you're listening,it feels as if the voice of the podcast's storyteller is talking directly to you.It's comforting,"said Proust.
It seems the age-old tradition of verbal storytelling is very much alive and well.

China has more than 30 intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产) recognized by the UNESCO, including paper-cutting, the Dragon Boat Festival, Peking Opera, acupuncture(针灸) and so on. The organization adopted a decision that China’s “The Twenty-Four Solar Terms”(二十四节气) should be put on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016 in Ethiopia.

The Twenty-Four Solar Terms, knowledge of time and practices in agriculture, starts from the beginning of Spring and ends with the Greater Cold, moving in cycles. It developed through thee observation of the sun’s annual movement in China. In ancient time, the method of tugui, earth sundial(日暑), was used to measure the shadow of the sun for determining the solar terms.

The Twenty-Four Solar Terms came into being and developed in close relationship with Chinese agricultural production. At the initial(最初的) stage of agricultural development, people began to explore the seasonal rules in the agricultural production to meet the needs in seeding, harvesting and other activities. Gradually, they formed the concept of “seed in spring, grow in summer, harvest in autumn and store in winter”. During the spring and autumn periods, the agricultural production was highly influenced by the seasonal changes, thus forming the concept of Solar Terms.

As a traditional Chinese knowledge system of time with a history of thousands of years, the Twenty-Four Solar Terms clearly expresses the concepts of respect for nature, and harmony between man and nature. Created by Chinese ancestors, it has functioned as a complete set of weather calendar(日历) to guide the agricultural production in China. It has also been introduced into North Korea, Japan and other neighboring countries and still used in Japan. The Chinese heritage has provably influenced the people’s way of thinking and behaving and will continue to be an important carrier of Chinese cultural identity.

19.Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mothe r Nature agree?Animals ca n't talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior?Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why?Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example,a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator(猎食动物)gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How?It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the"hurt"adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat.Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it.But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them.So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.
Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How?They don't make nests.Instead, they get into other birds'nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.
Chimpanzees,or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner's hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas,it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don't hear them, and they don't need to share their food.

9.When I was a boy I always wanted to be a cowboy.I remember my Mom worrying about me getting sick from the heat in the summer,because I wore a thick blue sweater all the time.No respectable cowboy,however,would wear short sleeves so I sweated while I played.
One day my parents gave me a bb gun.It looked just like a gun that all the cowboys used in the movies.I spent hours each day during those summer months shooting at stumps and pretending to be John Wayne (film actor who played tough heroes).As I was coming into the house one afternoon,though,I tried it one time too many.The gun that I thought was empty let out a soft pop and a bullet flew across the room and parted the hair of my Dad who was asleep on the couch.My Dad took one look at the bb hole a half inch above his head,walked over to me,took my gun,walked outside,and calmly broke it in half.
I didn't cry too much over this.I knew how close I had come to hurting my Dad with my stupidity.I didn't expect to ever get another bb gun either.That is why I was so surprised when my Dad bought me another one the next year.I guess he thought I had wised up enough to know how to use it this time.I never put a single bb in the new gun,but in my imagination John Wayne rode again.
I eventually outgrew my cowboy stage,but I never did outgrow my appreciation for my Father's forgiveness.He showed me that even when I messed up in the worse way I was still loved.He gave me another chance and let me know that I was forgiven whether I deserved it or not.He shared with me some of the unconditional love and forgiveness.May we always embrace and share that love and forgiveness as well.

13.Third-Culture Kids
Did you grow up in one culture,your parents came from another,and you are now living in a totally different country?If so,then you are a third-culture kid!
The term"third-culture kid"(or TCK) was coined in the 1960s by Dr.Ruth.She first came across this phenomenon when she researched North American children living in India.Caught between two cultures,they form their very own.(71)B  About 90percent of them have a university degree,while 40percent pursue a postgraduate or doctor degree.They usually benefit from their intercultural experience,which helps them to grow into successful academics and professionals.
(72)AIn fact many hardships may arise from this phenomenon.A third-culture kid may not be able to adapt themselves completely to their new surroundings as expected.Instead,they may always remain an outsider in different host cultures.Max,for example,experienced this fundamental feeling of strangeness throughout his life as a third-culture kid.(73)GWhile this can be a way to create a network of friends all around the world,it can be difficult for a third-culture kid like Max to maintain close friendships and relationships.
For a third-culture kid,it is often easier to move to a new foreign country than to return to their"home"country.After living in Australia and South Korea for many years,Louis finally returned to Turkey as a teenager.But she felt out of place when she returned to the country where she was born.(74)FShe did not share the same values as her friends'even years after going back home.
While a third-culture kid must let go of their identity as foreigner when he/she returns,the home country can prove to be more foreign than anything he/she came across before.The peer group they face does not match the idealized image children have of"home".(75)C
As a part of the growing"culture",TCKs may find it a great challenge for them to feel at home in many places.

A.Yet being a third-culture kid is not always easy.
B.In general,they often reach excellent academic results.
C.This often makes it hard for them to form their own identity.
D.However,their parents can help them see the opportunities of a mobile lifestyle.
E.Their experience abroad helps them to gain a better understanding of cultural differences.
F.Unlike other teens of her age,she didn't know anything about current TV shows or fashion trends.
G.Additionally,making new friends and saying goodbye to old ones will at some point become routine for a third-culture kid.
