14.When we perceive other people,we seldom describe a person in cold and objective words."She was 5feet 8inches tall,had fair hair,and wore a colored skirt."More often,we try to get inside the other person to pinpoint his or her attitudes,emotions,motivations,abilities,ideas and characters.Furthermore,we sometimes behave as if we can accomplish this difficult job very quickly---perhaps with a two-second glance.
We try to obtain information about others in may ways.Social scientist Berger suggests several methods for reducing uncertainties about others:watching,without being noticed,a person interacting with others,particularly with others who are known to you so you can compare the observed person's behavior with the known others'behavior,observing a person in a situation where social behavior is relatively unrestrained or where a wide variety of behavioral responses are called for; deliberately structuring the physical or social environment so as to observe the person's responses to specific stimuli; asking people who have had or have frequent contact with the person about him or her; and using various strategies in face-to-face interaction to uncover information about another person:questions,self-disclosures(自我表露),and so on.
Getting to know someone is a never-ending task,largely because people are constantly changing and the methods we use to obtain information are often imprecise.You may have known someone for ten years and still know very little about him.If we accept the idea that we won't ever fully know another person,it enables us to deal more easily with those things that get in the way of accurate knowledge such as secrets and description It will also keep us from being too surprised or shocked by seemingly inconsistent(前后不一致) behavior.Ironically (讽刺性的) those things that keep us from knowing another person too well (e.g.,secrets and deceptions) may be just as important to the development of satisfying relationship as those things that enables us to obtain accurate knowledge about a person (e.g.,disclosure and truthful statements.)

17.Summer Rain
The worst days of any summer are the rainy ones.We spend all year looking forward to nice weather and long, hot days. All of winter, with its cloudy days and bitter cold,we dream of those endless days at the beach, lying on the sand and enjoying the bright and burning sun.And then, summer comes, and it rains.
As a child,I would wake up to rainy summer days and come close to crying. It wasn't fair.We suffered through months of school and experienced bad weather for those short ten weeks of freedom and pleasant weather.
On those rainy summer days,I had nothing fun to do and could only sit inside, staring out at the rain like a bird in a cage.I was an only child,so there was no one else to play with.My father worked from home,so I was not truly alone, but he could not actively play with me since he was at work.It was those days that I would watch whatever was on television or read any books that I could find lying around.I'd drag through the day and pray each night that the rain would not be there the next day.
As an adult, though,my opinion of summer rain has changed. When you have to work every day, summer is not as exciting.Everything seems dull.Such a mindset makes you cheer for anything new or different.I spend the winter dreaming of summer and the summer dreaming of winter. When summer comes,I hate how hot it is.And then I look forward to the rain, because the rain brings with it a cold front, which makes me comfortable.Rainy days are still the worst days of the summer, but summer rain today means positively beautiful-and considerably cooler-weather tomorrow.

2.This brief book is aimed at high school students,but speaks to anyone learning at any stage of life.
Its formal,serious style closely matches its content,a school-masterly book on schooling.The author,W.H.Armstrong,starts with the basics:reading and writing.In his opinion,reading doesn't just mean recognizing each word on the page; it means taking in the information,digesting it and incorporating it into oneself just as one digests a sandwich and makes it a part of himself.The goal is to bring the information back to life,not just to treat it as dead facts on paper from dead trees.Reading and writing cannot be completely separated from each other; in fact,the aim of reading is to express the information you have got from the text.I've seen it again and again:someone who can't express an idea after reading a text is just as ineffective as someone who hasn't read it at all.
Only a third of the book remains after that discussion,which Armstrong devotes to specific tips for studying languages,math,science and history.He generally handles  these  topics  thoroughly (透彻地)  and  equally,except  for  some weakness in the science and math sections and a bit too much passion (激情) regarding history.Well,he was a history teacher-if conveyed only a tenth of his passion to his students,that was a hundred times more than my history teachers ever got across.To my disappointment,in this part of the book he ignores the arts.As a matter of fact,they demand all the concentration and study that math and science do,though the study differs slightly in kind.Although it's commonly believed that the arts can only be naturally acquired,actually,learning the arts is no more natural than learning French or mathematics.My other comment is that the text aged.The first edition apparently dates to the 1960s-none of the references(参考文献) seem newer than the late 1950s.As a result,the discussion misses the entire computer age.
These are small points,though,and don't affect the main discussion.I recommend it to any student and any teacher,including the self-taught student.

63.According to Armstrong,the goal of reading is toC.
A.gain knowledge and expand one's view
B.understand the meaning between the lines
C.express ideas based on what one has read
D.get information and keep it alive in memory
64.The author of the passage insists that learning the artsA.
A.requires great efforts
B.demands real passion
C.is less natural than learning maths
D.is as natural as learning a language
65.What is a shortcoming of Armstrong's work according to the author?D
A.Some ideas are slightly contradictory.
B.There is too much discussion on studying science.
C.The style is too serious.
D.It lacks new information.
66.This passage can be classified asB.
A.an advertisement     B.a book review
C.a feature story       D.a news report.

9.It's going to be a chaotic(混乱的)day. How do I know? It's Monday.OK,joking.But,I do predict that today will be filled with the normal last-minute tasks, fire drills, and unforeseen events. So,how do you keep yourself from being swept away in the stream of chaos? How do you remain calm while others are rushing and panicking? There is a problem…Panic! When things don't go as planned, how do you react? Are you the calm one who works to fix things?Or the one running around like Chicken Little screaming that the sky falling?Getting upset or alarmed can seem like natural reactions to a problem.
Here are a few tips to help you remain calm in the face of the storm:
●Don't Panic   You are better able to find a solution if you aren't panicking. If you can keep your head when others are losing theirs, you will be able to make a clear decision in the chaos.
●There Aren't Many True Emergencies   My time as a Naval Officer taught me about true emergencies. In the military, when there is a problem, people can get hurt or die. This is not usually the case when the office copier or email server goes down.Keep things in perspective. There are very few true emergencies in life.
●Avoid the"Fight or Flight"When you are stressed, your body will want to go into"fight or flight."Your body was designed to keep you safe from danger, but its natural reflexes aren't always the best solution against a project gone away.Keep your emotions in check and ensure that your physical reflexes don't make bad decisions for you.
●Head Into The Problem   While everyone else is running away, true leaders walk into a problem.Sticking your head in the sand only makes things worse.Instead of trying to ignore the situation, get to the heart of the issue as soon as possible.Only then can you address it.
How Will You React? When you find yourself ready to lose it,take a step back.Ask,"Is this truly an emergency?"Keep your head when others are losing theirs. And you'll find that you are that much closer to a solution.

19.Your kids learn a lot from their friends-things you can't teach them,no matter how much you want to.
Probably the most important thing kids learn is how to have peer relationships.As a parent,you can't do this,because you and your child aren't equals.
For example,when you're sitting on your family room floor and your very young child asks you to pass him the blocks,you probably hand them right over.If your child is sitting with a peer and asks the same thing,though,he might not get what he wants.
To succeed,your child will need to learn strategies for getting what he wants.For example,he might simply yank (猛拉) the toy out of his friend's hand.If he does that,he may learn that it's not the best way of getting what he wants because it leads to fighting and time-outs.The successful child will learn that he needs to negotiate a trade,to wait patiently,or to find something else equally fun to play with.
Friends also provide emotional support,something that is part of the foundation of healthy adulthood.You can't be with your child on the elementary school playground or at the high school dance.Your child's friends will be the ones to stick up for her,to include her in games, and later,to tell her she looks great even if her lousy prom (糟糕的舞会) date wanders off instead of dancing with her.
Friends also help your children learn.Friends solve problems together, imitate each other, and pass on knowledge.
Some experts believe that the single biggest predictor of your child's success later in life is her ability to make friends.In fact,they claim it's even more important than IQ and grades.
This doesn't mean that the kids who are most popular in school do the best later on in life.What matters is not the number of friends a child has but rather the quality of the relationships.
This is good news for those of us who hate to think that popularity really is the Holy Grail of childhood and adolescence.While it's true that popularity has many advantages,and that many popular kids really are nice people-and not just the best dressed or best looking-it's better to have a few good friends than to have the admiration of the masses.

5.By giving the example in Paragraph 3,the author wants to show thatA.
A.kids can learn how to deal with the relationships when they stay with their peers
B.parents should spend more spare time playing with their kids
C.kids should learn how to be polite when they ask their parents for help
D.parents can teach their kids how to be good members in the modern society in their daily life
6.What does the underlined phrase"stick up for"in the fifth paragraph mean?C
A.envy
B.oppose
C.support
D.ignore
7.In the author's opinion,B is more important than being popular for kids.
A.getting high grades
B.having some real friends
C.developing a good habit
D.knowing how to dress themselves up
8.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?C
A.How to Bridge the Generation Gap
B.What It Takes to Be a Good Friend
C.Why Friends Are Important
D.How to Be Popular in School.

6.We have all heard the expression:"Remember to stop and smell the roses."But,how often do we really take time out of our hectic fast-paced lives to notice the world around us?
I am as guilty as anyone of tuning out the world in this manner,especially when I am driving on California's overcrowded streets.A short time ago,however,I witnessed an event that showed me how being wrapped up in my own little world has kept me from being fully aware of the bigger world picture around me.
I was driving to a business appointment and,as usual,I was planning in my mind what I was going to say.I came to a very busy crossroads where the stoplight had just turned red."All right,"I thought to myself,"I can beat the next light if I race ahead of the pack."My mind and car were in auto pilot,ready to go when suddenly my trance was broken by an unforgettable sight.A young couple,both blind,were walking arm-in-arm across this busy crossroads with cars whizzing by in every direction.The man was holding the hand of a little boy,while the woman was clutching a baby sling to her chest,obviously carrying a child.Each of them had a white cane extended,searching for clues to navigate them across the crossroads.
Initially I was moved.They were overcoming what I felt was one of the most feared handicaps-blindness."Wouldn't it be terrible to be blind?"I thought.Without realizing the danger they were in,they were walking right the path of oncoming cars.I was frightened for them because I didn't know if the other drivers understood what was happening.
As I watched from the front line of traffic (I had the best seat in the house),I saw a miracle unfold before my eyes.
Every car in every direction came to a simultaneous stop.I never heard the screech of brakes or even the peep of a car horn.Nobody even yelled,"Get out of the way!"Everything froze.In that moment,time seemed to stand still for this family.Amazed,I looked at the cars around me to verify that we were all seeing the same thing,I noticed that everyone's attention was also fixed on the couple.Never skipping a beat,the couple adjusted their course as they followed the coaching.Trusting their white canes and the calls from some concerned citizens,they made it to the other side of the road.As they arrived at the curb,one thing struck me-they were still arm-in-arm.I was taken aback by the emotionless expressions on their faces and judged that they had no idea what was really going on around them.Yet I immediately sensed the sighs of relief exhaled by everyone stopped at that intersection.
As I glanced into the cars around me,the driver on my right was mouthing the words"oh,did you see that?!"The driver to the left of me was saying,"I can't believe it!"I think all of us were deeply moved by what we had just witnessed.Here were human beings stepping outside themselves for a moment to help four people in need.
I have reflected back on this situation many times since it happened and have leamed several powerful lessons from it.Take time to look around and really see what is going on in front of you right now.Do this and you will realize that this moment is all there is,more importantly,this moment is all that you have to make a difference in life.
As I drove away from that busy intersection,I did so with more awareness of life and compassion for others than I had arrived there with.Since then I have made the decision to really see life as I go about my daily activities and use my God-given talents to help others less fortunate.
Do yourself a favor as you walk through life:Slow down and take the time to really see.Take a moment to see what is going on around you right now,right where you are.You may be missing something wonderful.
