The Horn of Plenty is one of the largest natural health food stores within the Greater Hamilton area. We are big supporters of buying locally and we are here to tell you why it is so important for your family, the community and the environment.
The concept of buying locally is simple: buy food produced, grown, or raised as close to your home as possible. Not only will your food be fresher and tastier, but you are helping protect the environment and are supporting businesses within your community and reducing pollution.
Better for the environment
Sustainability (持续性) and global warming are such hot topics at the moment, and many people want to do their bit to help support a healthier environment. Small action carried out by many people can make a big difference. Most materials in an average North American meal have traveled about 1,500 miles to get from farm to plate. To cut out a big part of this travel would greatly reduce not only pollution from transportation and refrigeration but also customers’ expenses as well.
Taste and nutritional content
Locally-grown fruits and vegetables are usually sold within 24 hours of being harvested. Because they are picked at the height of ripeness (成熟) and travel only a short distance to the market, their freshness, nutrition, and flavor are kept. Produce trucked in from far away may lose both taste and nutritional content.
Community and home values
When you buy direct from a farmer or buy locally-grown foods, you are engaged in a time-honored tradition between a grower and an eater. You also help keep dollars within your community.
1.It can be inferred from the third paragraph that ___________.
A. global warming is the most serious problem now
B. North American food is rich in various kinds of materials
C. the increased cost of transporting food is passed on to the customers
D. most people support buying locally
2. Locally-grown fruits and vegetables taste good mostly because___________.
A. they are picked when they are fully grown
B. they are not polluted by chemical fertilizer
C. they can be harvested at any time
D. they are sent to the market at a high speed
3.According to the author, when you buy locally-grown foods ___________.
A. you can see how fruits and vegetables grow
B. you will contribute to protecting the environment
C. you will become much healthier and prettier
D. you are making money from your community
4.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The way to keep your food tasty and healthy.
B. The popularity of the Horn of Plenty.
C. The importance of protecting the environment.
D. The benefits of buying locally.

Everyone knows about straight-A students. We see them frequently in TV sitcoms (情景喜剧) and in movies. The kids at the top of the class get there by mastering a few basic techniques that others can learn in an easy way. Thus it is necessary for you to learn the secrets of becoming straight-A students.
Among the students we interviewed, study times are a matter of personal preference. Some work late at night when it is quiet ,whereas others awake early. And there are still others who decide to study as soon as they come home from school when the work is fresh in their minds. All of them agree, however, on the need for study time.“Whatever I was doing, I would find some time every day for studying,” says a top student from New Jersey.
Being organized is another habit they share in common. McCray, an outstanding student interviewed, runs track, plays football and is in a band . “I was so busy; I couldn’t waste time looking for a pencil or missing paper. I kept everything right where I could put my hands on it,” he says. Some students maintain two folders —one for the day’s assignment, another for papers completed and graded. However, some students have another system, filing the day’s papers in color-coded folders by subject.
The top students also take good notes while reading the text assignment. In fact, David Cieri, another top student interviewed, uses “my homemade” system in which he draws a line down the center of a notebook, writes notes from the text on one side and those from the lecture delivered by his teacher on the other. Then. He is able to review both aspects of the assignment at once .
Just before the bell rings, most students close their books, put away papers, whisper to friends and get ready to rush out. But the top students use the few minutes to write a two-or three-sentence summary of the lesson’s important points, which he or she scans before the next day’s class.
You can become a straight-A student by following the above secrets.

Tu Youyou together with William Campbell and Satoshi Omura won the 2015 Nobel Prize for their work against parasitic diseases. Irish-born Campbell and Japanese Omura won half of the prize for discovering a new drug, avermectin, that has helped the battle against river blindness and lymphatic filariasis, as well as showing effectiveness against other parasitic diseases. The Chinese scientist Tu Youyou, an 85-year-old female scientist, was awarded the other half of the prize for the discovery of artemisinin(青篙素), a drug cure for malaria(疟疾) that has saved millions of lives all over the world, especially in the developing world.
When the news broke that Tu won the Nobel Prize, there were cheers as well as doubts. It also has highlighted differences in prize-awarding practices between China and the West. Some said the achievement was the result of collective efforts by lots of Chinese scientists, so it was unfair to award the prize only to Tu. Indeed, Chinese science awards are mainly presented to projects, instead of individual scientists. But Western awards tend to honor individual scientists who are the first to come up with a new idea or method. Li Zhenzhen, a researcher of the China Academy of Sciences said that the West believes that the advancement of science comes from individuals’ creative minds.
In 1969, Tu started to hold a government project aimed at eliminating malaria. Tu and her teammates experimented with 380 extracts in 2,000 candidate recipes before they finally succeeded in getting the pure substance qinghaosu, later known as artemisinin. In 2011, Tu was awarded the Lasker Debakey Clinical Medical Research Award, commonly referred to as “America’s Nobel Prize”. (278 words)
