    　　Being thirteen has certain problems that only another thirteen-year-old would understand．The biggest, I think, is learning to get along well with adults．I have found that when dealing with grown-ups, it is wise to remember two things．

    　　For instance, one day just before supper, my mother sent me to the store for a loaf of whole-wheat bread．They didn’t have any．When I told my mother, she said, “Well, what kind did you get?” I told her I didn’t get any．She looked as if I had just announced that I was leaving home for good．“For goodness’ sake!” She said, “If they hadn’t had whole-wheat, you should have got something else! Why don’t you use your head?”

    　　Not long after that, she sent me to the store for red oilcloth．They didn’t have any, so I bought seven yards of purple．I thought it was pretty．Mother didn’t．She said, “Who ever heard of purple oilcloth in a red kitchen?” I told her I was only trying to use my head．She said．“Well, don’t ! And in the future, if you can’t get what I send you for, don’t get anything．”

    　　There are other things that seem a little strange, too．If my father goes out for the evening, he tells me to “look after” my mother and sister．But if the family goes out, and I want to stay home, my father won’t let me．He doesn’t feel comfortable if I am home alone．That means I am old enough to “look after” my mother and sister but not old enough to “look after” myself．

    　　Another problem is what to do when you trip over the cat and land with your head in the refrigerator, causing a large lump(肿块)to appear just over the right eyebrow．In that case, your father could feel free to say with a few choice words．Your sister could shed(流出)enough tears to dampen the whole room．Your mother could, and probably would, do both．But you? You are thirteen and can’t do anything! You are too young to curse(咒骂), and “big boys” don’t cry．So you just stand there looking more stupid than usual．But in spite of all this I still think thirteen is a wonderful age!

    Most people watching Jeremy Lin these past two months saw Jeremy Lin, New York Knicks star; but I, watching him, saw someone else. That was my elder brother, Bob, who is athletic and energetic. He could never sit still when he was in second grade; he had to get up every now and then and run around the room. And sure enough, he grew up to be a starting player for an N.C.A.A. championship lacrosse（长曲棍球）team. He was a Nike-endorsed marathoner, too, and reached the top of Mt. Everest, unguided, in his 50s.
    And yet my family never watched his lacrosse games. We did watch some of his marathons, but that wasn’t until he was in his 20s. When Bob was in his glory days, our Shanghainese-born parents were bent on getting him into medical school. There was a loving aspect to it: I can remember my father working through math books with him, lesson by lesson, at the big blackboard in the attic. Bob never did become a doctor, though; and neither did I. It wasn’t until my younger sister came along that someone in the family finally wore a white coat.
    Bob today could be the fittest 58-year-old on the planet. His doctor estimates his biological age at 35; he’s still climbing big mountains in the Himalayas. And, like Jeremy Lin, he’s charming. No one sees Bob without leaving with a laugh. He sometimes jokes he could be mayor of his building, and it’s true. To know him is to cheer for him.
    And yet my parents did not cheer for him. What if my mother had sat on the sidelines with her statistics, like Jeremy Lin’s mother? What if my father had played videos of athletes for my brother to watch and imitate? It’s hard not to wonder.
    And how did Jeremy Lin’s parents manage to do these remarkable things? Amy Chua, the tiger mother, recalls her immigrant father beating the kids whenever they mispronounced a Chinese word. How is it that Jeremy Lin’s immigrant father in particular, Gie-Ming Lin, encouraged his son to follow such an untraditional path?
