It seems that some people go out of their way to get into trouble. That’s more or less what happened the sight that Nashville police Officer Floyd Hyde was on duty.

“I was on the way to a personal-injury accident in West Nashville. As I got onto Highway 40, blue lights and sirens(警笛)going, I fell in behind a gold Pontiac Firebird that suddenly seemed to take off quickly down the highway. The driver somehow panicked at the sight of me.He was going more than a hundred miles an hour and began passing cars on the shoulder.”

But Hyde couldn’t go after him.Taking care of injured people is always more important than worrying about speeders, so the officer had.In stay on his way to the accident. But he did try to keep the Firebird in sight as he drove, hoping another nearby unit would be able to step in and stop the speeding car.

As it turned out, keeping the Firebird in sight was not that difficult.Every turn the Pontiac made was the very turn the officer needed to get to the accident scene.Hyde followed the Pontiac all the way to his destination. At that point he found another unit had already arrived at the accident scene. His help wasn’t needed. Now he was free to try to stop the driver of the Firebird, who by this time had developed something new to panic about.

“Just about that time,” Hyde says,“ I saw fire coming out from under that car, with blue smoke and oil going everywhere. He’s blown his engine. Now he had to stop.”

“After I arrested him, I asked him why he was running. He told me he didn’t have a driver’s license(执照).”

涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Safety in the highway is not totally out of our hands. Here are four ways we can protect ourselves when we travel.

72 People in small cars are injured more often and more severely than people traveling in large cars. Factories of small cars are strengthening their products’ safety, which helps. But the mix of large cars and small cars on the road is the main reason of the problem.

Being thrown into glass and metal car parts, or being thrown from the car can really hurt or even kill you. 73 The safety belt’s main purpose is to pull you back if your car has a sudden crash with another vehicle or object, or if it rolls over. A belt can reduce the chance of deadly injury by 45% and the chance of serious injury by 50%.

Air bags are important. More than half of all new cars sold have air bags. Air bags provide protection in frontal crashes — the type of crash that kills the most drivers — when they are also wearing safety belts. Most people are demanding air bags in the cars they buy. 74 Effective as they are, they can’t take the place of safety belts.

Drunk driving crashes are less likely to happen if you don’t drink. 75 Many people have realized that drunk driving can lead to death and injury, prison time and other results. There are movements to strengthen penalties (处罚)for drinking and driving.

  A. How to drive safely?

  B. You are safer in a large car.

  C. How to protect ourselves in the highway?

  D. Air bags are not installed in all cars.

  E. That’s why safety belts should be worn.

  F. Drunk driving is the most serious problem.

  G. But the protection provided by air bags is limited in side or rear crashes.

Some experts feel that cars are certain to fall into disuse. They see a day in the not-too-distant future when all cars will be deserted and made useless. Other experts, however, think the car is here to stay. They hold that the car will remain a leading means of city travel in the foreseeable future.

The car will undoubtedly change greatly over the next 30 years. It should become smaller, safer, and more practical, and should not be powered by the gas engine. The car of the future should be far more pollution-free than present types.

Unless changes take place in the power system, the car in the future will still be the main problem in city traffic jams. One suggested solution to this essential problem is the automated(自动的)system, which seems to hold water.

When the car enters the highway system, a small arm will drop from the car and connect with a rail, which is similar to those powering subway trains electrically. Once joined to the rail, the car will become electrically powered from the system, and control of the car will pass to a central computer. The computer will then monitor all of the car’s movements.

The driver will use the telephone to dial instructions about his position and the place he heads for into the system. The computer will find the best way and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the highway. The driver will be free to relax and wait for the call that will warn him of his coming exit .It is believed that an automated highway will be able to deal with 10, 000 cars per hour, compared with the 1,500 to 2,000 cars that can be carried by a present –day highway.

1.What is the main concern of the author of the passage?

  A.How to make cars pollution-free.

B.How to make cars smaller and safer.

C.How to solve the problem of traffic jam.

D.How to develop an automated subway system.

2.We can infer from this passage that .

A.the car connected to the rail on the highway will be powered by electricity

B.the lack of oil is forcing people to find new means to power automobiles

C.the driver under the system will be told where to get out of the highway

D.The future car will become larger, faster, prettier and less expensive

3.What provides cars with electric power in an automated highway system?

  A.An engine. B.A rail.

C.A computer controller. D.A small arm.

4.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A.The driver puts his information in the system by e—mail.

B.The new system can deal with 10 times as many cars as the present one.

C.After entering the automated system, the driver needs to do nothing but relax himself.

D.Some experts are not confident of the future, while the author is in favor of the opposite view.
