3.The late 1980s found the landscape of popular music in America dominated by a distinctive style of rock and roll known as glam rock or hair metal-so called because of the over-styled hair,makeup,and clothes worn by the style's shining rockers.Bands like Poison,Whitesnake,and Motley Crue popularized glam rock with their power songs and flashy style,but the product had worn thin by the early 1990s.Just as superficial as the 80s,glam rockers were shallow,short on substance,and musically inferior.
In 1991,a Seattle-based band called Nirvana shocked the corporate music industry with the release of its first single,"Smells Like Teen Spirit,"which quickly became a huge hit all over the world.Nirvana had simply mainstreamed a sound and culture that got its start years before with bands like Mudhoney,Soundgarden,and Green River.Grunge(垃圾) rockers derived their fashion sense from the youth culture of the Pacific Northwest:a mixing of punk(鬅客)rock style and outdoors clothing like heavy boots,worn out jeans,and so on.At the height of the movement's opportunity,when other Seattle bands like Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains were becoming popular,the trappings of grunge were working their way to the height of American fashion.Like the music,the teenagers were fast to accept the grunge fashion because it represented rebellion against shallow pop culture.
The popularity of grunge music was momentary; by the mid-to late-1990s,its influence upon American culture had all but disappeared,and most of its recognizable bands were nowhere to be seen to the charts.The heavy sound and themes of grunge were replaced on the radio waves by boy bands like the Backstreet Boys,and the bubblegum pop of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
There are many reasons why the Seattle sound faded out of the mainstream as quickly as it rocketed to distinction,but the most glaring reason lies at the rebellion,anti-establishment heart of the grunge movement itself.It is very hard to resist the trend when you are the one setting it,and many of the grunge bands were never comfortable with the fame that was brought to them.Eventually,the simple fact that many grunge bands were so against mainstream rock stardom (明星地位) took the movement back to where it started:underground.The fickle American mainstream public,as quick as they were to hop on to the grunge bandwagon,were just as quick to hop off and move on to something else.

解答 74.D.细节理解题.根据文章"Just as superficial as the 80s,glam rockers were shallow,short on substance,and musically inferior"可知,华丽摇滚是肤浅,缺乏实质性内容,而且他们的音乐是卑微的.故选D.
75.D.细节理解题.根据文章"the teenagers were fast to accept the grunge fashion because it represented rebellion against shallow pop culture"可知,青少年很快接受垃圾时尚,因为它代表反抗浅薄的流行文化.故选D.
76.A.细节理解题.根据文章"the over-styled hair,makeup,and clothes worn by the style's shining rockers"和"but the most glaring reason lies at the rebellion,anti-establishment heart of the grunge movement itself"进行比较可知,Glam rock是华丽的,歌曲华丽,歌手穿着也华丽.而grunge rock 更多的添加了叛逆的因素.故选A.
77.C.主旨大意题.本文从华丽的摇滚引出话题,介绍了垃圾摇滚的提出,兴起,到最后被主流所抗拒的发展过程.故选C.

8.Characters in novels don't always do what the writer wants them to do.Sometimes they cause trouble,take on lives of their own,or even work against the writer.It's not just a problem for inexperienced authors:famed children's novelist Roald Dahl said he got the main character in his book Matilda so"wrong"that when he'd finished his first version,he threw it away and started again.
Of course it's not the characters'fault.The problem lies with the author.Take Stephen King,who admitted that writing working-class characters is more difficult nowadays because his own circumstances have changed."It is definitely harder,"King said."When I wrote Carrie many years ago,I was one step away from physical labour."
This is also true for characters'ages,added King."When you have small children,it is easy to write young characters because you observe them and you have them in your life all the time.But your kids grow up.It's been harder for me to write about this little 12-year-old girl in my new book because my models are gone."
For other authors,such as Karen Fowler,there's one quality that can stop a character in its tracks:boredom."I had particular problems with the main character in my historical novel Sister Noon,"she says."She had attitudes about race and religion that seemed appropriate to me for her time and class,but they were not attitudes I liked.Eventually I grew quite bored with her.You can write a book about a character you dislike or a character you disagree with,but I don't think you can write a book about a character who bores you."
According to Neel Mukherjee,it was Adinath,a character in The Lives of Others,who made him work the hardest."I think I struggled because it's difficult to write a character whose most prominent personal feature is weakness,as Adinath's is,without making that feature define him,"Mukherjee says.But a troublesome character is far from an unwelcome guest,he continues,arguing that"when characters work against the author they come alive and become unpredictable".
"That is a fantastic thing to happen,"Mukherjee says,"I celebrate it.It is one of the great,lucky gifts given to a writer."

41.What can we infer about Steven King's book Carrie?C
A.It was his most difficult book to write.
B.It was the first successful novel King wrote.
C.There were few children featured in the story.
D.Some of its main characters were working class.
42.Why did Karen Fowler have trouble writing the main character in her novel Sister Noon?D
A.She disagreed with the character's attitudes.
B.The age difference between the two was too large.
C.She found the character very uninteresting.
D.The historical setting made accuracy difficult.
43.Neel Mukherjee believes that his difficult-to-write charactersB.
A.are a sign that the story is not realistic
B.are often the most interesting
C.should be praised by all authors
D.need to be researched more thoroughly
44.The authors who were interviewed for the passage are probablyA.
A.famous and successful
B.unknown to the readers

15.The Puritans (新教徒) get a bad reputation in America-especially when it comes to alcohol.
Mayflower, the first ship that came over from England to Massachusetts Bay,actually carried more beer than water. In fact the Founding Fathers of America liked a drink-Samuel Adams was a partner in his father brewery, and Thomas Jefferson was famous for importing European wines.

By the late 19th Century, support for Prohibition, banning the manufacture and sale of alcohol, was powerful. The first arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol was in 1897.On 16 January 1919,Prohibition was set into law. However,by the 1930s when American economy was experiencing a hard time it was widely believed that making alcohol legal again would provide badly-needed jobs and taxes. So in February of 1933,Prohibition was ended.Still,Prohibition had a great influence on alcohol drinking in this country. In 1955,Americans drank an average of 2.3 gallons of pure alcohol a year. The Prohibition movement was still quite strong after Prohibition ended and it led to a lot of local prohibition on alcohol.

According to a new study (25)conducted (conduct) by Google in the UK,a pet's name is the most common choice---about 16percent of people use their pet's name as their passwords.
The next (26)most popular (popular) kind of password is an important date such as a wedding anniversary or the date of birth of a family member.The name of a child,words related to favorite sports teams and even (27)the word"password"were among the most common passwords chosen by users,reported the Daily Mail.
Eran Feigenbaum of Google has warned that passwords that are easy to guess (28)make (make) accounts unsafe.The truth is (29)that one in six people has tried to log into someone else's account by guessing a password,including that of a colleague or family member,the study found.
