15.Bad news sells. If it bleeds,it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored(监控) in different ways, researchers are discovering new rules.By tracking people's e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.
"The‘if it bleeds'rule works for mass media,"says Jonah Berger,a scholar at the University of Pennsylvania."They want your eyeballs and don't care how you're feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don't want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer."
Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication-e-mails,Web posts and reviews,face-to-face conversations-found that it tended to be more positive than negative(消极的),but that didn't necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility,Dr.Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories:thousands of articles on The New York Times'website. He and a Penn colleague analyzed the"most e-mailed"list for six months. One of his first finds was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times'readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others.
Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny,or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused(激发) one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad.The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared,as Dr.Berger explains in his new book,"Contagious:Why Things Catch On."

8.One early morning,I went into the living room to find my mother reading a thick book called Best Loved Poems to Read Again and Again.My interest was aroused only by the fact that the word"Poems"appeared in big,hot pink letters.
"Is it good?"I asked her.
"Yeah,"she answered."There's one I really like and you'll like it,too."I leaned forward.
"‘Patty Poem,'"she read the title.Who is Patty?I wondered.The poem began:

She never puts her toys away,
Just leaves them scatteredwhere they lay,…散乱的
The poem was just three short sections. The final one came quickly:
When she grows and gathers poise稳重
I'll miss her harum-scarum noise,莽撞的
And look in vain for scattered toys.徒劳地
And I'll be sad.

A terrible sorrow washed over me.Whoever Patty was,she was a mean girl.Then,the shock.
"It's you,honey,"My mother said sadly.
To my mother,the poem revealed a parent's affection when her child grows up and leaves.To me,the"she"in the poem was horror.It was my mama who would be sad.It was so terrible I burst out crying.
"What's wrong?"my mother asked.
"Oh Mama,"I cried."I don't want to grow up ever!"
She smiled."Honey,it's okay.You're not growing up anytime soon.And when you do,I'll still love you,okay?"
"Okay,"I was still weeping.My panic has gone.But I could not help thinking about that silly poem.After what seemed like a safe amount of time,I read the poem again and was confused.It all fit so well together,like a puzzle.The language was simple,so simple I could plainly understand its meaning,yet it was still beautiful.I was now fascinated by the idea of poetry,words that had the power to make or break a person's world.
I have since fallen in love with other poems,but"Patty Poem"remains my poem.After all,"Patty Poem"gave me my love for poetry not because it was the poem that lifted my spirits,but because it was the one that hurt me the most.
