The other day I was talking to a stranger on the bus; he told me that he had a good   36  in Chicago and he wondered if, by any chance, I   37  to know him . For a moment, I thought he might be   38  ,but I could tell from the expression on his face that he was not. He was   39  . I felt like saying that it was ridiculous to  40  that out of all the millions of people in Chicago I could possibly have ever bumped into his friend. But,  41  , I just smiled and reminded him that Chicago was a very   42  city. He nodded, and I thought he was going to be content to drop the subject and talk about something else. But I was wrong. He was silent for a few minutes, and then he   43   to tell me all about his friend.
His friend’s main  44  in life seemed to be tennis. He was an excellent tennis player , and he  45  had his own tennis court. There were a lot of people with swimming  46  , yet there were only two people with private tennis court; his friend in Chicago was one of them. I told him that I knew several   47  like that, including my brother, who was doctor in California. He    48  that maybe there were more private courts in the country, than he   49  but he did not know of any others. Then he asked me   50  my brother lived in California. When I said Sacramento, he said that was a coincidence 51 his Chicago friend spent the summer in Sacramento last year and he lived next door to a   52 who had a tennis court in his backyard. I  said I felt that really was a coincidence because my next-door neighbour had gone to Sacramento last summer and had   53  the house next to my brother’s house. For a moment, we stared at each other, but we did not say anything.
“Would your friend’s name happen to be Roland Kirkwood?” I asked finally. He   54  and said, “Yes. Would your brother’s name happen to be Dr Rey Hunter?” It was my  55   to laugh. “Yes,” I replied.

I grew up poor---living in the housing projects (住房) with six brothers, three sisters, a varying assortment (各式各样东西的混合) of foster kids (养子), my father, and a wonderful mother, Scarlette Hunley. We had little money and few worldly goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was  36  and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still  37  a dream.
My dream was  38 . By the time I was sixteen, I could crush a baseball, and hit anything that moved on the baseball field. I was also  39 : My high school coach Jarvis, who not only believed in me, but taught me how to believe in myself. He  40  me the difference between having a dream and showing conviction (信念). One particular incident with Coach Jarvis changed my life forever.
It was the summer between my junior and senior years, and a friend  41  me for a summer job. This meant a chance for money in my pocket—cash for dates with girls, certainly, money for a new bike and new clothes, and the  42  of savings for a house for my mother. The prospect of a summer job was attractive and interesting, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity. Then I realized I would have to  43  summer baseball to handle the work schedule, and that meant I would have to tell Coach Jarvis I wouldn’t be playing.
When I told Coach Jarvis, he was  44  as I expected him to be. “You have your whole life to work,” he said. “Your  45  days are limited. You can’t afford to waste them.”
I stood before him with my head hanging, trying to think of the words that would explain to him why my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his  46  to me.
“How much are you going to make at this job, son?” He demanded.
“3.5 dollars an hour.” I replied.
“Well,” he asked, “Is $3.5 an hour the price of a dream?”
That question, the plainness of it, laid bare for me the difference between wanting something right now and having a goal. I delicated myself to sports that summer and with the year I was hired by the Pittsburgh Pirates to play baseball, and was  47  a $20,000 contract. I signed with the Denver Broncos in 1998 for $1.7 million, and bought my mother the house of my dreams.

We often talk about ourselves as if we have permanent genetic defects (缺陷) that can never be changed. “I’m impatient.” “I’m always behind.” “I always put things   36 !” You’ve surely heard them. Maybe you’ve used them to describe   37 .
These comments may come from stories about us that have been   38  for years—often from   39  childhood. These stories may have no   40  in fact. But they can set low expectations for us. As a child, my mother said to me, “Marshall, you have no mechanical (操作机械的) skills, and you will never have any mechanical skills for the rest of your life.” How did these expectations   41  my development? I was never   42  to work on cars or be around   43 . When I was 18, I took the US Army’s Mechanical Aptitude Test. My scores were in the bottom for the entire nation!
Six years later,   44 , I was at California University, working on my doctor’s degree. One of my professors, Dr. Bob Tannbaum, asked me to write down things I did well and things I couldn’t do. On the positive side, I   45   down, “research, writing, analysis, and speaking.” On the   46  side, I wrote, “I have no mechanical skills.”
Bob asked me how I knew I had no mechanical skills. I explained my life   47  and told him about my   48  performance on the Army test. Bob then asked, “  49  is it that you can solve   50  mathematical problems, but you can’t solve simple mechanical problems?”
Suddenly I realized that I didn’t   51  from some sort of genetic defect. I was just living out expectations that I had chosen to   52 . At that point, it wasn’t just my family and friends who had been   53  my belief that I was mechanically hopeless. And it wasn’t just the Army test, either. I was the one who kept telling myself, “You can’t do this!” I realized that as long as I kept saying that, it was going to remain true.   54  , if we don’t treat ourselves as if we have incurable genetic defects, we can do well in almost   55  we choose.

When I was in middle school, I was one of the smaller players on the basketball team. In our first game of the season, we were   31  to face a good team, all of whom were tall guys. Naturally, at my   32 , it would have been easy to be   33  by our competitors.
On game day, my basketball coach called me over to him. He was a strong and tough coach, and in his   34  rough manner said, “Joel, you’re not that   35 , but let me tell you that size doesn’t matter. Don’t be afraid. What   36  is right down in here.” He pointed his finger at his  37  as he continued, “Joel, you’ve got a big heart, and you’re to   38  it this year.”
When I heard the coach’s   39  , I stood taller than usual! I thought to myself: The coach believes in me! My confidence   40  and I played better that year than I’d ever done before.
It’s   41  what we can achieve when we know somebody really believes in us. That coach took a little time to make a big   42   . He took time to make me confident in myself. If we’re going to   43  the best in people, we need to sow seeds of   44  .
As the saying goes, “Love looks for a way of being constructive.”   45  , love looks for ways to help improve somebody else’s life.
When people are   46  us, they should leave better off than they were before. People should feel   47  and inspired after spending any time with you and me  48  feeling discouraged or defeated.
Remember, there’s   49  greater investment(投资)in life than in being a people builder. Relationships   50  much more to us than our achievements.

“Linda, if beating yourself up were an Olympic sport, you’d win a gold medal!”
Annabel, my close friend, stunned me with that frank observation after I told her how I had mishandled a situation with a student in a third-grade class where I was substituting. “I should never have let him go to the boy’s room without a pass! It was my fault he got into trouble with the hall monitor! I’m so stupid!”
My friend burst out laughing, and then made her “Olympic” comment. After a brief period of reflection I had to admit that she was right. I did put myself down an awful lot. Why, just during the previous day I had called myself “a slob” for having some papers spread out on my desk, “ugly” when I left the house without makeup and “an idiot” when I left the house for an emergency substitute job without my emergency lesson plan.
In a more reflective tone, Annabel said, “I once took a workshop at church where the woman in charge had us list all the mean things we say about ourselves.”
“How many did you have on your list?” I asked.
“Fifteen,” she confessed. “But then the teacher said, ‘Now turn to the person next to you and say all the items on your list as if you were speaking to that person!’ ”
My jaw dropped. “What did you do?”
“Nothing. Nobody did. We all just sat there, until I said, ‘I could never say these things to anyone else!’ ”
“And our teacher replied, ‘Well, if you can’t say them to anyone else, then don’t ever say them to yourself!’ ”
My friend had a point. I would never insult a child of God---and I’m God’s child, too!
God, today let me be as kind to myself as I would be to another of Your children.
小题1: What does Annabel mean by the first sentence of the passage?
A.The writer is a good athlete.B.The writer scolds herself too much.
C.She is encouraging the writer. D.A gold medal is not a big deal.
小题2: What does the writer intends to tell us through the second and third paragraphs?
A.She has low self-esteem over some small things.
B.She often makes serious mistakes in daily life.
C.She is a third-grade teacher.
D.She cares too much about her appearance.
小题3: We can infer that the underlined word “slob” might be _____.
A.something untidyB.someone dangerous
C.something dirtyD.someone lazy
小题4: What does the writer mean by the last sentence of the passage?
A.She is ready to turn to God for help.
B.She will be kind to all children.
C.She won’t insult herself as well as others.
D.She is willing to be a child of God.

A: Yes. As life was very hard, I used to work to help bring money in for the family. I spent my childhood working, with responsibilities beyond my age. However, it taught me to deal with problems all alone. I learnt to be independent.
Q: What changes would you like to make in your life?
A: If I could change something in my life, I’d change it so that my childhood could have taken place in another area. I would have loved to live with my family in freedom. Who cares whether we have much money, or whether we have a beautiful house? It doesn’t matter as long as I can live with my family and we are safe.
Q: How do your get along with your parents?
A: My parents supported me until I came of age. I want to give back what I’ve got. That’s our way. But I am working in another city. My only contact with my parents now is through the phone, but I hate using it. It filters(过滤)out your emotion and leaves your voice only. My deepest feelings should be passed through sight, hearing and touch.
