People say teenagers are no good. They make too much noise in shopping malls; they drive recklessly up
and down America's main streets; they carry chips on their shoulders as big as the Sears Tower. And at least
some of the time those things are true. But we shouldn't forget that there are hard moments in the life of a
teenager too.
I watched such a moment not long ago at a woman's funeral (葬礼). I didn't expect the event to affect me.
Through much of the ceremony, in fact, I remained unmoved.
Then her teenage grandson stepped forward. With his very first deep breath, every heart in that church
was achingly reminded of something we had all forgotten. Softly he began:"I want to share a few values that
Nana taught me. She never failed to see light in any situation. When our family dog would literally attract her,
what would Nana say? 'Oh, what beautiful markings that dog has.' That was Nana.
"She was a strong woman who often lived in the shadow of my grandpa, who was a successful
businessman in this city. But she was the one behind the scenes who provided the strength and support for
Grandpa's career," he said, with a voice now trembling."That was Nana's way."
Through a muffled sob, he continued. "Whenever she did anything worth recognition, you'd have to hear
about it from a different source, because she was never one to brag."
Finally, in a voice breaking free of sorrow, he looked up and said, "Nana taught me courage. She put up
an incredible fight to the end, when she died peacefully, which is how she lived her life. That was Nana's
way, and I hope I can carry on in the same manner."
There are no hearts as sensitive as those of teenagers, because everything is happening to them for the
first time. The trouble with teenagers is that they haven't learned to be controlled.
When that boy rose to speak about the woman who surely had been his truest ally and dearest friend, his
honest voice dragged each of us out into the open where we could no longer hide in the calm ritual. He
exposed us to the truth about this very real woman who believed in a boy who probably tried the patience of
many adults. He reminded us that his grandmother was more than another dot on the chart of life and death.
All over again we felt those powerful losses crisscrossing our own hearts, and we knew that when you
say good-bye to a beloved grandparent, you say good-bye to something happy, something young in yourself.
And that something never really returns, and the pain never really goes away.

In one way of thinking, failure is part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards
success. The "spider-story" is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century,
was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider making a web(网). The spider tried
to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times. On the seventh time he made it and
went on to make his web. Bruce is said to have been encouraged by this and to have gone on to
defeat the English. Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed
before he found the right way to make one. Once he was asked why he kept on trying to make
a new type of battery when he had failed so often, he replied, "Failure? I have no failure. Now
I know 50,000 ways it won't work."
So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions right? Were
you in top form yourself? What can you change so things will go right next time?
Second, is the goal you're trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what
your real goals may be. Think about this question, "If I do succeed in this, where will it get me?"
This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn't be doing anyway.
The third thing to keep in mind about failure is that it's a part of life. Learn to "live with yourself"
even though you may have failed.
1. In the first paragraph the writer tells mainly about _____.
A. the value of failure
B. how people fail
C. famous failures
D. how not to fail
2. The thing the writer does not tell you to do to deal with failure is _____.
A. check out your goals to see if they are right for you
B. think about failure as part of your life
C. think about failure to find out what went wrong
D. keep away from things that are beyond you
3. Even if we have failed we should _____.
A. learn to forget it
B. learn to remember it
C. learn to enjoy it
D. learn to accept it

Once many years ago, I pulled a family out of a burning car somewhere in Wyoming. Last week I received
a telephone call from a woman who could not stop crying as she told me that one of my stories had saved her
son from committing suicide. In closing she called me a hero.
That got me thinking about what a hero really is. Was I a hero because I pulled a family from a burning car?
If so, how could I be a hero just because I wrote a story that saved someone's life?
Today I decided to look up the word "hero" in the dictionary to see exactly what it meant. It read "a person
who does something brave". As I read on, it also said "a person who is good and noble".
That statement impressed me more than the part about being brave. So I thought about something very
important. Say I was walking into the local Wal-Mart Store and I happened to open, and hold the door for
someone as a courtesy. As they passed me by, I say, "How are you today?" Most of the time that would be no
big deal, but this time let's say it was for someone who was deeply depressed and near the end of the rope.
That may have very well been the only kindness or courtesy shown to them in a very long time.
Having been near "the end of my rope", after my marriage of twenty years ended, I was in such a condition.
I was within hours trying to get up enough courage to end the pain and misery. When I returned home,
someone had sent me a card in the mail which told me how much they would appreciate me as a friend. That
wonderful card probably saved my life. That person, without even knowing it, saved a life and became a hero.
The many stories I-kept writing in the following years saved the life of a teenage boy. In turn that makes
the person who sent me the card a double hero. I suppose that is why I fight so hard to help the children now
living in orphanages (孤儿院). Most children come out of these institutions with a very hard and bitter attitude
against the world. The gifts we send them let them know that they have not been forgotten. Hopefully, most of
them will never hurt anyone because of the kindness shown to them by those of us who cared. If it works, we
will also become "heroes".
Gee, who would have ever thought that anyone can become a hero, and, possibly save a life, just by being
kind and courteous to others? The best part of all is that becoming a hero is free to all who wish to wear such
an honor.
1. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
A. Why Should You Be A Hero?
B. What Exactly Is A Hero?
C. I Am A Hero
D. Everyone Is A Hero
2. The underlined word "courtesy" in Paragraph 4 means the behaviour that is _____.
A. both polite and respectful
B. both brave and fearless
C. both thoughtful and considerate
D. both cute and kind
3. The underlined word "it" in the last sentence of Paragraph 5 refers to _____.
A. the wonderful card the writer received
B. the action of sending the card
C. the fact that the sender saved the writer
D. the fact that the sender was a true friend
4. According to this passage, which of the following can be considered as the behaviour of a hero?
A. Holding a door open for someone.
B. Sending someone a wonderful card.
C. Keeping writing many stories for children.
D. Being kind to someone who has a hard time.

Things always seem different from in normal (平常的) times to people when he or she is not feeling well.
Perhaps, many of us know this rule, but we do not care about it. At such times, things make life hard for
people in little ways. For example, when I am not in good condition, I can never find the things I need. To my
surprise, it seems that the things I need have moved from all the places where I expect to find them. If I need
something, I can never find it quickly.
Sometimes when we are not well, we will find that boxes become heavier when lifting them, that doors
don't want to open much more easily when trying opening them, that wind becomes even colder when facing
it, that the sun becomes much hotter when under it, that cars don't run better when driving it and the distances
are longer than they were when we felt fine.
Why does it happen? The things around us usually do what they should do as long as we are well and strong.
But when we aren't in good condition, things often tell us that they are really not our friends but our enemies.
It is wrong. In fact, everything keeps the same. Only because we are disturbed (打扰) by the bad mood (情绪),
we get the wrong feeling that everything is in the opposite direction against us. If we keep calm in the bad times,
things will be the same as usual.
1. According to this passage, why does the writer feel everything is unusual in bad condition?
A. Because everything changed.
B. Because the writer has changed everything.
C. Because the bad conditions influence (影响) his finding the right things.
D. Because the writer feels very sad and does not want to find the right things.
2. What does the underlined sentence mean?
A. When we feel bad, things do not look like our enemies.
B. When we feel good, we can know something about our enemies.
C. When we feel bad, things can help us as our friends.
D. When we feel good, we feel that things are our friends.
3. What does the writer want to tell us in this passage?
A. When we are in bad condition,we can feel that everything is usual.
B. When we find that boxes become heavier than usual, we must be in a bad emotion.
C. If we meet trouble, we should keep calm.
D. If we meet trouble, we should find ways to get ourselves out of it.

The quality of patience goes a long way toward your goal of creating a more peaceful and loving self.
The more patient you are, the more accepting you will be of what life is, rather than insisting that life be
exactly as you would like it to be. Without patience, life is extremely frustrating. You are easily annoyed
and bothered. Patience adds some ease and acceptance to your life. It's important for inner peace. Becoming
more patient involves opening your heart to the present moment, even if you don't like it. If you are stuck
in a traffic jam, late for an appointment, being patient would mean keeping yourself from building a mental
snowball before your thinking gets out of hand and gently reminding yourself to relax. It might also be a
good time to breathe as well as an opportunity to remind yourself that, in the bigger scheme of things, being
late is "small stuff".
Patience is a quality of heart that can be greatly enhanced with deliberate practice. An effective way that
I have found to deepen my own patience is to create actual practice periods-periods of time that I set up in
my mind to practice the art of patience. Life itself becomes a classroom, and the curriculum is patience. You
can start with as little as five minutes and build up your capacity for patience over time. What you'll discover
is truly amazing. Your intention to be patient, especially if you know it's only for a short while, immediately
strengthens your capacity for patience. Patience is one of those qualities where success feeds on itself. Once
you reach little milestone-five minutes of successful patience-you'll begin to see that you do indeed have the
capacity to be patient, even for longer periods of time. Over time, you may even become a patient person.
Being patient will help you to keep your perspective (洞察力). You will see even a difficult situation, say
your present challenge, isn't "life or death" but simply a minor obstacle that must be dealt with. Without
patience, the same scene can become a major emergency complete with yelling, frustration, hurt feelings, and
high blood pressure.
1. In the first paragraph, the expression "building a mental snowball" can be best replaced by _____.
[     ]
A. imagining a big snowball
B. awaiting a result calmly
C. taking a deep breath
D. losing your patience
2. It's implied in the second paragraph that _____.
[     ]
A. the quality of patience is very hard to develop
B. patience should become a school course
C. you'll get more than expected from practicing patience
D. the quality of patience will lead you to success
3. People without patience will treat the challenge as _____.
[     ]
A. a minor obstacle
B. a matter of life or death
C. the small stuff
D. a great chance
4. The best title of this passage should be _____.
[     ]
A. To Be More Patient

C. The Advantages Of Patience
D. Relationships Between Patience And Success

It was graduation day at the university where I work and a beautiful day quite unlike the first graduation
I attended as a young professor. On that cold day years ago, as we watched the students walking into the
hall, one of my colleagues turned to me and said, "Graduation will be one of the happiest and one of the
saddest time of your life." At my inquiry, he answered, "Because the students you have gotten to know have
to leave."
As years went by, my previous confusion about my colleague's words no longer existed. When I came
across naughty students, I have had to rethink why I chose to be a teacher. It obviously isn't the money.
Once a former computer science student of mine called me, asking me if I wanted to have a change. He was
working at Nintendo Corporation. His salary was higher than my current one, though I have more education
and have worked for over a decade. With my programming skills, he said he could get me hired I thanked
him, but declined his kind offer.
A few days before this current graduation, while working on final grades, I found a note a student had
slipped in with her homework. She thanked me for being her teacher and said the things she had learned in
my class-not about math, but about life-would be things she would remember long after the math skills had
faded away. As I finished reading, I remembered why I had become a teacher.
Now, on this sunny graduation day, as I again observed the sea of blue hats and gowns, I did so with
renewed dedication (奉献) and a deeper sense of satisfaction-I will always be grateful that I am a teacher.
1. Hearing his colleague's description of graduation for the first time, the author _____.
[     ]
A. quite agreed with his colleague
B. thought it very funny
C. was very puzzled
D. was very sad
2. The computer science student called up the author because he _____.
[     ]
A. wanted to inform the author of his present job
B. tried to persuade the author to work with him
C. wanted the author to share his joy and satisfaction
D. thought the author wasn't fit to be a teacher
3. The underlined part blue hats and gowns refers to _____.

A. university colleagues
B. life memories
C. graduates' clothes
D. decorations in the hall
4. The author wrote this passage to _____.
