【1】Entering a study abroad program was a personal program for myself. College had not been fun up until that point. I was looking for excitement. After meeting a guy who loved to travel, he convinced me that studying abroad was one of the best decisions he had ever made and that I should try it. Immediately I visited my study abroad office and discovered many choices. I only spoke Spanish, but not fluently enough to feel comfortable in a program that was based in Spain or Mexico. This meant I needed a country that spoke English. Finally I chose the University of Central London.

【4】My favorite memories in London is turn around my classwork. When studying abroad I took an English class that focused on British humor. During this class we watched British films and went to live performances. Before this class, I never understood British humor, and now I enjoy it more than American humor. My favorite class was art history. I cannot express to anyone how interesting it was to take art history in London.

【5】When people ask me if I would study abroad again, I exclaim, “yes!” You will never learn any lessons or information like you do when travelling abroad to a foreign country. As a person you will grow independent from everything. You will learn how to make friends and survive alone on your own. You will also learn to respect and understand other cultures.

阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答下列小题。

Cell phones are everywhere-everywhere except Aztec High School.

A new policy put in place at the beginning of the school year by the Aztec School Board forbade cell phones from the school’s campus.

“They are interrupting the educational process,” said Kirk Carpenter, the Aztec High School headmaster. “There is no educational benefit from having them here.”

The new policy started recently afrer long discussions between school and district managers. Aztec school officials said that cell phone use had become a problem during testing sessions.

Carpenter said, “There are also a lot of issues with cell phones. The bottom line(问题的关键) is that they are not in line with what we are trying to do bere, which is providing an education for our students.”

Although the headmaster has heard of no serious objections to the new rule, the complaint he hears most often is parents’ being concerned about contacting students directly in case of an emergency.

“That actually slows down the process,” said Carpenter. “If a parent calls a student’s cell phone, it still needs to go through the office. We can’t just let the student leave school. We don’t know who is on the line. They will still need to call the office to get their children free to leave.”

“If you need to contact a student, you can                      and they will give a message to the student. It still works well,” he added.

Aztec official Linda Paul said, although she never imagined the effect cell phones would have on education, she supports the decision made by the school. Paul added that AHS is not the only campus in the district to have taken such measures.

Cell phone use for teachers, of course, is a different matter. “We hope our teachers know enough not to be on the phone during class, ” Paul said. “I have never seen one of my teachers on the phone during class. ”

阅读下面的短文, 并根据短文后的要求答题。

Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers told me, “Barbara, be enthusiastic! Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience.”

How right they were! Enthusiastic people can turn a boring drive into an adventure, extra work into opportunity and strangers into friends.

“Nothing was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson..     It is the inner voice that whispers, “I can do it!” When others shout, “No, you can’t!”

It took years and years for the early work of Barbara Mclintock, a geneticist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted. Yet she didn’t stop working on her experiments.

We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder and it is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such a youthful air, whatever their age.

At 90, cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach. As the music flowed through his fingers, his stooped shoulders would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes.      As author and poet Samuel Ullman once wrote, “Years wrinkle(起皱纹) the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.

How do you rediscover the enthusiasm of your childhood? The answer, I believe, lies in the word itself. “Enthusiasm” comes from the Greek and means “God within”. And what is God within is but a sense of love---proper love of self(self-acceptance) and, from that, love of others.

If we can’t do what we love as a full-time career, we can as a hobby. Elizabeth Layton of Wellsville, Kan, was 68 before she began to draw. This activity ended periods of depression that had troubled her for at least 30years, and the quality of her work led one critic to say, “ I am tempted to call Layton as a genius.”

We can’t afford to waste tears on “might-have-been”. We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after “what-can-be”.

We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses---finding pleasure in the backyard garden, the simple picture of a six-year-old, the charming beauty of a rainbow.

阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分。满分10分)

阅读下面的短文, 并根据短文后的要求答题。(注意问题后的词数要求)

[1] Usually, when your teacher asks a question, there is only one correct answer. But there is one question that has millions of correct answers. That question is “What’s your name?” Everyone gives a different answer, but everyone is correct. Have you ever wondered about people’s names? Where do they come from? What do they mean?

[2] People’s first names, or given names, are chosen by their parents. Sometimes the name of a grandparent or other member of the family is used. Some parents ______________________. A boy could be named George Washington Smith; a girl could be named Helen Keller Jones.

[3] Some people give their children names that mean good things. Clara means “bright”; Beatrice means “one who gives happiness”; Donald means “world ruler”; Leonard means “as brave as a lion”.

[4] The earliest last names, or surnames, were taken from place names. A family with the name Brook or Brooks probably lived near a brook(小溪);someone who was called Longstreet probably lived on a long, paved road. The Greenwood family lived in or near a leafy forest.

[5] Other early surnames came from people’s occupations. The most common occupational name is Smith, which means a person who makes things with iron or other metals. In the past, smiths were very important workers in every town and village. Some other occupational names are: Carter — a person who owned or drove a cart; Potter —a person who made pots and pans.

[6] The ancestors of the Baker family probably baked bread for their neighbors in their native village. The Carpenter’s great-great-great-grandfather probably built houses and furniture.

[7] Sometimes people were known for the color of their hair or skin, or their size, or their special abilities. When there were two men who were named John in the same village, the John with the gray hair probably became John Gray. Or the John who was very tall could call himself John Tallman. John Fish was probably an excellent swimmer and John Lightfoot was probably a fast runner or a good dancer.

[8] Some family names were made by adding something to the father’s name. English-speaking people added –s or –son. The Johnsons are descendants of John; the Roberts family’s ancestor was Robert. Irish and Scottish people added Mac or Mc or O. Perhaps all of the MacDonnells and the McDonnells and the O’Donnells are descendants of the same Donnell.
