【答案】Dear Mr. Headmaster,

I’m very excited to hear that our student dormitories will be transformed in summer holiday next year.

On behalf of us students, I prefer to bring forward several opinions about dormitory transformation. First, the duty room must be located at the gate of the first floor in order to make sure the security of students. Second, the dormitories of students in Grade 3 should be arranged on the higher floors so that they can get involved in a relatively quiet environment to study for their credit points or college entrance examination. Last but not the least, that they may pour into the public toilet at the same time can lead to a certain push or squeeze, so it couldn’t be better if there could be washrooms in each dorm.

I will appreciate it if my advice could be accepted and I’m extremely expecting a new look of our dormitory.

Yours

Li Hua

【题目】Recently I went to the Tsavo National Park in northern Kenya for a film. We set off early for a distant water hole. A huge elephant, covered with dry mud, drank calmly and deeply. He might have traveled 50 km to reach the water. He wasnt going to hurry now. Hed drink a while and then rest in the shade, and then drink again—or so we thought. What actually happened was that he drank deeply and stepped away. Then he suddenly fell down. Within minutes he was dead.

We called animal doctor Jeremiah Poghon immediately. He removed the head of a poisoned arrow from the elephants body, and let out over 100 litters of pus()—the result of the elephants meeting with a poacher(偷猎者) months before.

Todays poacher shoots from a blind. He fires an arrow, covered with poison, into the body of an elephant. If the poacher is lucky, the elephant might die in an hour or two; if not, he might have to follow the elephant for days before it dies. Often the arrow head fails to kill the elephant at once—it doesnt mean the poison wont finally kill the elephant, but it will be a slow death. Living in Tsavo through these times, I could see the results of poaching from time to time.

When I think about the death of that elephant, what stays with me is the extraordinary silence after the shocking sound of his body hitting the ground. I took some comfort from the knowledge that as the dead body returned to the soil, some animals would benefit—but I couldnt escape the feeling that with the death of such a large animal, the world seemed a poorer and emptier place.

1While filming near the water hole, the author and his team ________.

A. knew the elephant was injured

B. found the elephant acted violently

C. thought the elephant was in good condition

D. tried their best to save the elephant

2Further examination showed that the dead elephant ________.

A. had wounds all over it

B. had suffered a lot

C. had drunk some deadly water

D. had had a good fight with a poacher

3Further examination showed that the dead elephant ________.

A. Embarrassed.

B. Funny

C. Relieved

D. Upset

4Why did the author write the text?

A. To introduce African elephant.

B. To ask readers to protect wild animals.

C. To describe his filming experience.

D. To show the cruelty of poaching.

【题目】 Heads up! Across the country, sports injuries are a safety concern for young athletes. Now, the American Medical Association (AMA) has a new set of guidelines aimed at protecting players from the danger of concussions—serious injuries caused by a blow to the head.

“By raising awareness of the serious risks associated with concussions and ensuring that the appropriate guidelines are in place, we can reduce the number of young athletes who may return to the game too soon, which can put their health at further risk,” said AMA Board Member Jack Resneck Jr. M.D., in a statement.

The policy recommends that young athletes who may have a concussion be taken off the field as soon as possible. Then, they are only to return to their sport with a doctor’s written approval. The policy also sets age-specific rules for health care professionals and athletic organizations in evaluating and caring for concussions.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), a concussion is a type of traumatic(创伤) brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This type of movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist inside the skull(颅骨). It can damage brain cells and create chemical changes in the brain.

The CDC says that between 1.6 million and 3.8 million traumatic brain injuries caused by sports and recreation-related activities occur in the U. S. every year. A study from the Center for Injury Research and Policy showed that as many as 40% of high school athletes return to playing before they should. The AMA’s new guidelines should help to bring those numbers down.

1Why does the AMA set the new guidelines?

A.To raise safety standards of sports.

B.To protect athletes from concussions.

C.To set rules for health care evaluation.

D.To help players return to the game quickly.

2What should young athletes who may have a concussion do?

A.Avoid using the head.B.Leave the field forever.

C.Get treatment in time.D.Switch to another sport.

3What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

C.How the CDC works.D.How a concussion can be prevented.

4Which of the following is the best title for the text?

【题目】 Starbuck’s founder, Howard Schultz, came up with an idea for his coffee chain while drinking espresso(浓咖啡) in a bar. He took a good product, repackaged it and globalized it. But to many Italians, the coffee served by Starbucks and other branded stores is as far away from proper Italian coffee as you can get, despite the Italian-sounding offerings on their menus.

Now, I am part-Italian and like most Italians, I think that Italy represents the height of coffee culture, against the standard by which all coffee should be measured. My Italian friends and family hate the idea of adding a little sugar juice or other things to their valuable cappuccino(卡布基诺). I have a coffee machine at home, which is to the Italian kitchen what the kettle is to the British. As far as I’m concerned, the cappuccinos, lattes(拿铁) and espressos served in branded coffee chains taste bitter, a low copy of the real thing.

You’d never ask for a latte in Italy. If you did, you’d get served a glass of milk. Coffee and espresso are the same in Italy. Then there’s the Australian “white coffee”, a halfway house between a Starbucks-style latte and a macchiato(玛奇朵). The “white coffee” has gone global so much that recently it replaced the cappuccino on Starbucks’ menu in some parts of the US.

What’s more, Italians don’t waste time around in coffee shop armchairs drinking cappuccinos while surfing the Internet. Still, when it comes to taste, Italians are trying to reclaim the ground. Part of the problem is the price of coffee. Most Italian bars will not charge more than one euro a cup, which means there isn’t the choice to purchase more high-quality coffee. Italian flavor is held back by the way the coffee is boiled.

I still think I’ll be sticking to home-made coffee from my trusted machine. And I’ll continue to drink it in the Italian way.

1What’s the purpose of telling the story of Starbucks in Paragraph 1?

A.To introduce the topic of the passage.B.To introduce the history of Starbucks.

C.To present the standard of good coffee.D.To explain the key to the success of Starbucks.

2In the author’s opinion, the coffee served in Starbucks and other branded stores _______.

A.contains too much sugar juiceB.represents the Italian coffee culture

C.is very different from that served in the USD.cannot meet the Italian standard of good coffee

3Italians prefer home-made coffee due to the fact that _______.

A.home-made coffee is much cheaper

B.they can produce proper Italian coffee at home

C.each family has a tradition to use the coffee machine

D.they can have access to the Internet when drinking coffee at home
