    6．You Are What You Eat
    Genetic（基因的）engineering is the scientific change of the genetic material in a living organism． It allows scientists to identify specific genes，to remove them from an organism's chromosomes （染色体），improve them，analyze them，and possibly clone them，and to then reinsert the changed gene into the original organism，or a completely different organism．Unlike traditional breeding （繁殖），where a desired quality would be bred within the same species，genetic engineering can insert desired ones into organisms of different species．Wow…Did you catch that？
    Genetic engineering creates many positive contributions to agriculture． For example，by genetically engineered（GE） foods，anti-cancer agents，minerals and vitamins can be increased．Improved taste，shelf life，and better transport are all possible．Also，GE plants can increase pest and bacterial resistance，therefore，making the food safe for consumers．
    But some argue that the possible negative effects outweigh the positives，and critics are starting to voice their concerns．  Unlike Europe，in the United States labeling is not required on genetically engineered foods or on foods that contain genetically engineered products． Most Americans do not realize that they are，in fact，eating GE foods．
    The public is also concerned about the unknown health risks．With limited understanding of genes，scientists cannot predict possible effects．Because most genes introduced into GE plants come from sources not introduced into the human body，it is impossible to know if they will cause reactions． Moreover，due to the lack of labeling if allergies develop，it will be extremely difficult to find the origin of them．
    There is also a major moral question in many minds．For many，the conflict is not if it is safe or not，but it disturbs them because it is unnatural and unnecessary．We are currently producing one and a half times the amount of food needed to feed the world，yet one in seven people are starving．GE food is unnecessary，and fails to address the root of hunger． Many believe that the only people who will benefit are the corporations that produce it．
    Scientists cannot foresee t．he possible effects of GE foods，yet we eat them every day without even knowing it．We already have enough food，so why create more that could be potentially harmful to us，to the Earth and to all wildlife？I think that the benefits are amazing，but until we know for sure how these foods will affect us，they are not worth the risk．

    Matsumoto's"Personal Mobility Robot，"equipped with four cameras and a sensor to  recognize the user's centre of gravity，is designed to help elderly move around without pressing buttons，using joysticks（操纵杆）or rotating wheels as in traditional wheelchairs．
    The robot can also help find misplaced glasses by identifying them with a sensor．
    Other robots，such as the award-winning"DiGRO"，can support busy parents who have little time to play with their children．The robot can use the Internet to find a simple image and then draw pictures，keeping children company while parents work．
    While Chapit，a relatively simple robot，managed to attract a corporate partner many researchers，such as Kiyoshi Matsumoto，a professor at the University of Tokyo，struggle to attract sponsors for more expensive projects．
    "We have developed a robot that can assist many people，but we still haven't found a sponsor，"said Matsumoto，who added that the cost of the machine，if mass-produced，would be comparableto that of a car．"In the current economic environment there are few companies willing to invest in such a costly project，"he said．

    10．It is a tall tale that terrifies most young children．Swallow a piece of chewing gum and it will remain in your body for seven years before it is digested．Or so they say．An even worse tale is that swallowed gum can wrap itself around your heart．
    But what does happen if you should accidentally eat a stick of gum？Chewing gum is made out of gum base，sweeteners，coloring and flavoring．The gum base is pretty indigestible-it is a mixture of different ingredients（成分）that our body can't use．
    Most of the time，your stomach really cannot break down the gum the way it would break down other foods．However，your digestive system has another way to deal with things you swallow．After all，we eat lots of things that we are unable to fully digest．They keep moving along until they make it all the way through the gut（肠子）and come out at the other end one to two days later．
    The saliva（唾液）in our mouths will make an attempt at digesting chewing gum as soon as we put it in our mouths．It might get through the shell but many of gum's base ingredients are indigestible．It's then down to our stomach muscles-which contract and relax，much like the way an earthworm moves-to slowly force the things that we swallow through our systems．
    Swallowing a huge piece of gum or swallowing many small pieces of gum in a short time can cause a blockage within the digestive system，most often in children，who have a thinner digestive tube than adults-but this is extremely rare．
