         Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don't give friendship back. That is why
    some friendships don't last long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat
    your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three
    rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.
         Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell
    the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out you haven't been honest, you may lose friend's trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.
         Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grows. You do not have to give your lunch
    money or your clothes. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very
    valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend
    know better.
         Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at
    school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in
    solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in
    your friend's place so you can understand the problem later.
         No two friendships are very exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you
    plan to keep your friends, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.

         Too much TVwatching can harm children's ability to learn and even reduce their chances of getting
    a college degree, new studies suggest in the latest effort to examine the effects of television on children.
         One of the studies looked at nearly 400 northern California thirdgraders. Those with TVs in their
    bedrooms scored about eight points lower on math and language arts tests than children without
    bedroom TVs.
         A second study, looking at nearly 1, 000 grownups in New Zealand, found lower education levels
    among 26yearolds who had watched lots of TV during childhood. But the results don't prove that TV
    is the cause and don't rule out that already poorly motivated youngsters (年轻人) may watch lots of TV.
         Their study measured the TV habits of 26yearolds between ages 5 and 15. Those with college
    degrees had watched an average of less than two hours of TV per weeknight during childhood,
    compared with an average of more than 2 hours for those who had no education beyond high school.
         In the California study, children with TVs in their rooms but no computer at home scored the lowest,
    while those with no bedroom TV but who had home computers scored the highest.
         While this study does not prove that bedroom TV sets caused the lower scores, it adds to
    accumulating findings that children shouldn't have TVs in their bedrooms.

         Too often we accuse others of not listening, pretending   that we ourselves are faultless, yet in our
    hearts we know that many of the mistakes we make come about because we haven't listened carefully
    enough. We get things wrong because we haven't listened carefully enough. We get things wrong because we haven't quite understood what someone meant when they were talking to us. Anyone who has ever
    taken the minutes of a   long meeting will know how hard it is to remember-despite the benefit of
    notes-exactly what everyone said. But success depends on getting things right-and that means listening.
         Listening is not the same thing as hearing which is not quite an effort. It demands attention and
    concentration. It may mean quizzing the speaker for additional information or for clarification-it is always
    better to ask than to continue regardless and get things wrong. However, if you allow your mind to
    wander onto something else, even for a few minutes, you'll miss what the speaker is saying -probably
    at the very moment when he or she  is saying something critical. And not having heard, you won't know
    you've missed anything until it's too late.
         The most common bad habit we have is to start thinking of what we are going to say about the
    subject long before the other speaker has finished. We then stop listening. Even worse, this often adds
    rudeness to inattentiveness, as once you have decided what to say there is a fair chance you will interrupt
    to say it. Good listeners don't interrupt. In fact it is often worth explaining the main idea of what you have
    just been told before going on to make your own points. Nobody is offended by this and it shows that
    you have listened well.
    Above all, be patient and accept that many people are not very good communicators. It's helpful to
    remember that the ways people move and position themselves while they are speaking can reveal a
    great deal about what they are saying. Equally important you should put yourself in the other person's
    place, both intellectually and emotionally; it will help you to understand what_they_are_getting_at and
    form a response. But don't be too clever. Faced with a know-all, many people keep quiet because they

         Too often young people get themselves employed quite by accident, not knowing what lies in the
    way of opportunity for promotion, happiness and security. As a result, they are employed in doing
