Snake dishes have become popular in recent years. Snake meat in various flavors(风味)is often seen in restaurant ads. It seems that eating snake is now in vogue(盛行), and if you haven’t eaten snake yet, you are considered “out of date”. But I wonder whether all of the trends are worth following.

Some people may defend themselves by saying that snake meat is nutritious(有营养的). But these people don’t realize that mice and worms often comprise a snake’s diet, therefore, there are many parasites(寄生虫)found inside snakes. Thus, they may do harm to our health. Apart from this, I’m sorry to see that more and more snakes are being killed by man’s cruel knife.

According to the English newspaper Shanghai Star, about 1, 000 tons of snakes are eaten every year in China. In Shenzhen of Guangdong Province, sometimes as many as 10 tons of snakes are served on dinner tables in a single day.

These figures alert us that if we still turn blind eyes to this continuous movement against snakes, a vicious cycle will be created. If more snakes are eaten by people, the number of snakes will drop, which will make an increase in mice and worms population, which will result in a decrease of crop output. This will make more people hungry.

Who will see such tragedy happen?

So let’s start not to eat snakes any more because “to protect the snake is to protect ourselves”.

1This passage tries to advice people ________.

  Ato keep ourselves healthy

Bto protect snakes and not to eat them

  Cto protect mice and worms

Dnot to eat mice and worms

2The parasites in the snake come from ________.

  Aits diet

  Bmice

  Cworms

  Dsnake meat

3What will happen if we continue eating snakes?

  AMore snakes will be eaten.

BA vicious cycle will be created.

CMore people will turn blind eyes to it.

  DMice will damage the crops.

4The vicious cycle may be like this: ________.

Amore snakes→more mice and worms→less crop output

Bless snakes→more mice and worms→more crop output

Cless snakes→more mice and worms→less crop output

Dmore snakes→less mice and worms→more crop output

5The best title of this passage is ________.

  ASnake Meat in Various Flavors

Percy's mysterious(神秘的) disappearance upset every body a great deal. Percy is a performer in a night-club and just before he was due to appear on the stage, it was discovered that he was not in his usual place. There was certainly good cause to worry because Percy is a dangerous snake and he is over six feet long.

The search for Percy lasted several days and a great number of people joined in. As Percy could not possibly have gone out into the streets, he must still be hiding somewhere in the club. The searchers found that some of the boards in Percy's room had rotted and there was a gap(间隙) in the floor. It seemed likely that Percy had slipped under the floor and then crept behind a wall where there was a nice warm central heating unit.

The manager of the club suggested that Percy might have found some mice behind the wall and eaten them. Since then he had probably curled round the warm pipes and gone to sleep. As a snake that has had a satisfying meal can sleep for several days continuously, a determined effort had to be made to get him out. The hot water was therefore turned off immediately and the temperature in the room fell to a few degrees above zero. But Percy, who has the reputation(名誉) of being a lazy creature, made no attempt to come out. The manager then tried something else. He placed a dish full of tasty delicacies(精美食品) near the broken floor-boards. Again Percy failed to appear. With the hot water turned off, it was decided that Percy must be freezing by now, so an electric fire was put into his room to encourage him to come in and warm himself. To help him make up his mind even more quickly, cold air was blown under the floor-boards. Even these measures did not succeed, so there was only one thing left to do. The next morning, the whole wall was carefully knocked down brick by brick so as not to frighten Percy with too much noise. The hot water pipes were gradually laid bare, but, to their astonishment, the searchers found no sign of Percy anywhere.

1.Why did Percy's mysterious disappearance upset everybody a great deal?

[ ]

The question has puzzled scientists since the SARS virus first appeared and spread around the world:Where did it come from?

Now, the first clue has appeared.Researchers in Hong Kong and Shenzhen have proved the probable culprit(凶犯)-- the palm civet, a small cat - like animal that is treated as a tasty dish in some parts of China.

After investigating many civets and other animals, scientists from the University of Hong Kong and Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention, made a discovery.Four of the palm civets tested were carrying the coronavirus(冠状病毒)that causes SARS.

The study provides the first suggestion that the SARS virus exists outside humans. However, many important questions remain. The possibility of animal - to - animal transmission(传播)has to be investigated. For example, the presence of the virus could result from eating of an infected animal.

Yuen Kwok - Yung, a microbiologist at the university, said the virus may have jumped into humans as people raised, killed and cooked the wild animals.

The civet is one of the main parts in the usual wildlife dish “dragon - tiger - phoenix soup”, for which wealthy Chinese in Guangdong Province will pay large sums. The soup includes pieces of civet cat and snake.

Hong Kong virologist Malik Peiris, who heads the team that first found the SARS coronavirus, said that if the food was properly cooked, the virus should be killed.

However, he said, it obviously came from the wild animal, and someone could come into contact with it while the live animal was being handled(买卖).

The findings, announced Friday, caused Chinese officials to ban the sale of the animals to try to stop the spread of the disease and prevent new outbreaks, World Health Organization officials said.

News from the WHO website says that it is too early to know how much wild animals cause the transmission of SARS.

A.

SARS virus existed outside humans

B.

C.

they didn’t know where SARS virus came from

D.

World Health Organization officials
