    9．Education is not an end，but a means to an end．In other words，we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them．Our purpose is to fit them for life．
    In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all-whether rich or poor，clever or stupid-one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation．But we can already see that free education for all is not enough； we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degrees refuse to do what they think to be"low"work，and，in fact，work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries．But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor．We can live without education，but we die if we have no food．If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses，we should get terrible diseases in our towns．

    Explanation of Contents
    This is the fourth edition of these pages．It is hard to believe，but once again they are new and improved．My motive in publishing these pages remains to help and stimulate others in Shakespeare studies，and especially those who might contribute their work to the Internet．The spirit of altruism （利他主义） that originally built the Internet is not quite gone，though，sadly，through the pressure of time and profit has lessened．
    A major new addition to the pages is a Shakespeare Timeline，which is an online biography mounted at this site．The problems with searching for Shakespeare resources using the available Search Engines are：
    ----It is difficult to focus most searches so that you get a manageable number of relevant hits；
    ----It is impossible by simply reading an abstract（摘要） to make any distinction between the output of a Junior High School student and that of a professional researcher．
    Another change in these pages over previous editions is the"What's News"page．If you come away from these pages with the feeling that they are very useful but slightly pedantic （学究的），I will have realized my goal．
    An Apology
    I am continually apologizing to the many who have written me requesting revisions of the pages．We are all too busy．I simply have not had the time to dedicate to these pages that I wish．But I love the material and so have，at long last，made some time to update them．

    14．The circadian clock，more commonly known as the body clock，is an internal system that tells our bodies when it's time to go to sleep and when it's time to wake up．Scientists track this clock by measuring the amount of melatonin（褪黑激素） circulating in a person's blood at any given time．
    In a healthy sleeper，melatonin levels rise a few hours before bedtime，stay high through the night，and then settle back down when it's time to wake up．
    In our modern society，however，most of us stay up many hours past sunset and would probably sleep in many hours after sunrise if we could．
    And the trouble is，your melatonin levels any still be high when your alarm clock goes off in the morning，which leads to grogginess．It may also have other health consequences as well，such as diabetes，overweight and heart disease．
    Professor Kenneth Wright of the University of Colorado in the US wanted to see if our body clocks can be reset by a short stay in nature．His team recruited（招募） 14 physically active volunteers in their 20s and 30s．Nine went on a weekend camping trip，while the other five stayed home．
    At the end of the weekend，the researchers reported that in just two days，the campers'body clocks had shifted so that their melatonin levels began to rise more than an hour earlier than they did before they left on the trip．By contrast，the body clocks of the group that stayed home shifted even later over the course of the weekend．
    "This tells us we can reset our clocks fast，"Wright said．
    Therefore，if you want to change your sleep patterns you could try to increase your exposure to natural light during the day and decrease the amount of artificial light you see at night．
    And if that doesn't work，there's always camping．

    If you are arriving at London Heathrow Airport and are not transferring to another flight outside Britain or Northern Ireland，you must pass through Passport Control and Customs immediately after leaving your plane．If you are not British or a citizen of the European Community，you must fill out a special form before your passport is examined．This form is called a landing card and should be given to you during the flight to London．
