My first job was at a local restaurant, where I worked for seven years and learned so many lessons, especially from a fellow  16 .

Being a waitress changed my life. One of my  21 customers was Fred Hasbrook. He always ate an omelet(炒蛋), and when I saw him _22 , I tried to have it on his table as soon as he sat down.
Thanks to the newfound confidence I  23 __from Helen, I dreamed of having my own  __24 . But when I called my parents to ask for a loan(贷款), they said, “We just don’t have the money.”
The next day, Fred saw me and asked, “What’s  25 ? You’re not smiling today.” I  26__my dream with him and said, “Fred, I know I can do more if somebody  27 just have faith in (信任)me.”
Before long he handed me checks  28 __$50,000—along with a note that I have to this day. It reads, “The only collateral(抵押品)on this loan is my trust(信任) in your  29 as a person. Good people with a dream should have  30  __to make that dream come true.”
I took the checks to Merrill Lynch, where the money was provided for me. I 31  __working at the restaurant, making  32 for the restaurant I would open. My plans soured(被破灭), though, and I lost the  33 .
Later I decided to apply for a job at  Merill Lynch. Even though I had no experience, I was__34 and ended up becoming a pretty good agent(代理商,代理人).   35 , I paid back Fred the $50,000, plus 14-percent annual interest(利息 ). Five years later, I was able to open my own firm(公司).

A
The choice to adopt and hold gratefulness is the one that is different from those who suffer misfortune and those who enjoy a full life.
My mother died when I was 24. It was a very difficult time in my life — everything seemed to fall apart. I lost my job, and then my utilities were turned off. I had to take cold showers for six months. A neighbor who knew about my situation came to my house and made me an offer. I took care of her children as a job, and I no longer went hungry. I was surprised that someone would trust me — a young woman with her children. And it was with the very confidence that before long I began taking care of other people’s children, too. I have since moved 300 miles from Boise, Idaho. For more than 23 years I have made every effort to reach out to all the kind-hearted people who helped me when I was down and out. Without their trust, I don’t know what I would have done. I am very involved in my community and volunteer at the local food bank, and I help out whenever I can. I’d like to owe what I am to whoever has offered me generosity.
If you are grateful for what you already have, the world will work together to give you more to be grateful for. Otherwise, the world will give you more to complain about.
Moreover, the true master learns to be grateful, in advance, for the things that are desired, because, being grateful in advance for some attainment or accomplishment does two very important things: one…it tricks your subconscious into believing that the goal is certain and two…it convinces other people, with whom you must interact to achieve your desires, that you know what you are about, that you are a winner, not a whiner (哀诉者).

Most people who experience bad service while traveling, shopping, or dining out do no complain. They accept bad services or products without making a sound. Why? Many feel complaining won’t do any good. In fact, they’re wrong, because companies don’t want their customers unhappy. Not sure you can do it? Here are some ways to use when things go wrong.
1.If you have a complaint, do something about it right away. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get your complaint solved.
2.First, complain to the servers. If they are not going to solve your problem, then ask politely to speak to a manager. And if that doesn’t work, you can always request to speak to the manager’s manager!
3.Demand a discount(折扣). Let’s say you were promised a hotel room with an ocean view, but got a view of a brick wall instead; if you were promised a seat in the front of a plane, but got a seat in the back. You should do something about both of these situations. Ask a special discount.
4.Don’t be passive. Offer ways you think the company can satisfy you.
5.Insist on the price you were told. If you are refused, get a manager’s name and telephone number, and promise to follow up with a letter and a telephone call.
6.If all else fails, wait until you get home and take action. Call the company’s head office, and speak to the most powerful person possible. Then follow up your call with a letter of complaint. If necessary, call the customer protection office in your city and complain.
小题1:
According to the text, people don’t complain because________.
A.they think complaining doesn’t work
B.they consider it wrong to complain
C.they don’t want to waste their time
D.they don’t want to become unpopular
小题2:
To complain about something, you should________.
A.wait until you come back home
B.prepare for a long time
C.talk to the manager directly
D.try to solve the problem actively
小题3:
What might be the best title for the text?
A.Get what you should get
B.Complain as you please
C.Take action to deal with problems
D.Avoid trouble and don’t complain

The other day I heard a few local musicians talking:
"I hate all the pianos in this town and I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They cannot even understand rhythm (韵律)."
"Nobody wants to pay musicians anything. I’m sick of all the people who want you to play without paying you."
One younger musician said, "There are several clubs who want me to play for a few nights a month, and I’m trying to find other places to play. I’m also planning to join in several summer festivals this year."
I really liked what the younger musician said so I made friends with him.
Attitudes are important. Whether they’re positive (积极的) or negative (消极的), they’re all rubbing off on you. If you’re around people who are always complaining or blaming (责备) others, it is possible that you will start doing the same as well. If you spend lots of time with people who don’t support (支持) your dreams, it is time to take a look at the people you call "friends".
There is an easy exercise you can try. Make a list of the people who you often stay with, and simply stop spending time with the negative ones on your list. Set a new standard for yourself and don’t become friends with people who fall below that standard.
Of course, this exercise is entirely different from making friends only for the good of oneself. We really should try to help and spend time with those who are working towards a goal or dream.
小题1:The musicians’ conversation at the beginning is there to show that ______.
A.musicians’ living conditions are not good
B.people in that town have poor taste in music
C.young people are more likely to succeed
D.different people have different attitudes
小题2:The underlined part "they’re all rubbing off on you" in Paragraph 6 means ______.
A.they’ll push you ahead
B.they’ll help you realize your dreams
C.they’ll keep you from moving on
D.they’ll have an influence (影响) on you
小题3:By doing the exercise mentioned in Paragraph 7, you can ______.
A.improve your ability to make friends
B.make the right kind of friends
C.develop a better relationship with your friends
D.make some new friends with the same interests as you
小题4:We can get the following information from the passage EXCEPT ______.
A.the younger musician is a positive person and would be a good friend
B.one should avoid (避免) making friends with people who have lots of
difficulties
C.the exercise can help you keep close to really helpful friends
D.one will start complaining if one spends too much time with negative people

“Mom, can I bake some bread?” We were 15; my best friend, Hanna, and I, determined to try our hands at creating some beautiful bread.
“It’s not worth the trouble,” my mother said. “It takes lots of time and makes a big mess. Our bakery bread is delicious without all that effort.”
Begging was useless. Mom’s “no” meant “No!”
But several weeks later, opportunity knocked. My parents were going out for the evening. I immediately invited Hanna to be my partner in bread-baking crime.
We studied the recipe. That was easy. “Mix oil into flour then beat in four eggs, one at a time, with remaining sugar and salt.”
We were not good at breaking eggs. I tried to learn from my mother.
“Gradually add eight cups of flour. When dough (面团) holds together, squeeze it.”
We took turns working like that. “Is the dough ‘holding together’?” we asked each other.
I remembered my neighbor’s instructions: “If it’s too sticky, add some flour; if too dry, add water.”
We added water. Then more flour. Then more water. By then, the mass of our dough had grown very much.
“Place dough on floured surface and squeeze till smooth,” the recipe instructed.
We took turns burying our hands in the damp dough, pinching, squeezing, and feeling it leak between fingers. “Clean and oil bowl, and then return dough to bowl. Cover and let dough rise in a warm place for one hour.”
This was good news—we’d have a break. On the dirty kitchen chairs, we dreamed about our beautiful bread. “See?” we would tell my mom. “Isn’t it worth the work?”
Hanna and I couldn’t help glancing at the rising process every few minutes. But nothing happened.
“Maybe something will happen in the hot oven,” I said.
Unfortunately, when we removed the loaves from the oven, they were like hard stones.
Mom was right; it takes time and effort. It sometimes makes a mess. But still it feels good, somehow, to be part of that long, ongoing chain of bread bakers. Since that night, both Hanna and I have learned to do it right.
