    In spite of the uncertainty of the economy, the movie industry has been stricken by a box-office outburst. Suddenly it seems as if everyone is going to the movies, with ticket sales this year up 17.5 percent, to $1.7 billion.
    And it is not just because ticket prices are higher. Attendance has also jumped, by nearly 16 percent. If that pace continues through the year, it would amount to the biggest box-office increase in at least two decades.
    Americans, for the moment, just want to hide in a very dark place. People want to forget their troubles, and they want to be with other people. Helping feed the outburst is the mix of movies, which have been more audience-friendly in recent months as the studios have tried to adjust after the discouraging sales of more serious films.
    As she stood in line at the 18-screen Bridge theater complex here on Thursday to buy weekend tickets for “Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience,” Angel Hernandez was not thinking much about escaping reality. Instead, Ms. Hernandez, a Los Angeles parking lot attendant and mother of four young girls, was focused on one very specific reality: her wallet.
    “Spending hundreds of dollars to take them to Disneyland is ridiculous right now,” she said. “For $60 and some candy money I can still be a good mom and give them a little fun.”
    A lot of parents may have been thinking the same thing Friday, as “Jonas Brothers” sold out more than 800 theaters, and was expected to sell a powerful $25 million or more in tickets.
    The film industry appears to have had a hand in its recent good luck. Over the last year or two, studios have released movies that are happier, scarier or just less depressing than what came before. After poor results for a rush of serious dramas built around the Middle East, Hollywood got back to comedies(喜剧).

    Culture means the pattern of human activity and the symbols that give importance to these activities. Culture expresses itself in terms of the art, literature, costumes, customs, language and religion. The word 'culture' comes from the Latin word which means “to teach”.

    People generally use spices （香料） every day when preparing meals．Most of these spices are readily available in local supermarkets．However, in the 15th and 16th centuries, spices were as valuable as gold or diamonds．Spices are small plants or parts of plants, such as ginger, pepper, vanilla, and cinnamon, which are used to add flavor to our food． 1   Such a use for spices actually goes all the way back to Roman times．The Romans used spices such as cumin and coriander to help preserve food．

For four days, she moved heavy stones one at a time by herself. She did not stop until she found her son. He was alive.
    Here in China, I met a young boy with a serious condition. He had undergone twenty operations and spent nearly his whole life in hospital. I thought he would be sad, but when I met him, his smile was so warm and welcoming.
    In life, we need role models that we can admire and learn from. When my life is difficult, I try to remember the courage and goodness of these three people.

    Premier Win Jiabao continued his second trip around the quake disaster zone on May 23, 2008, visiting surviving students in Mianyang, one of the worst-hit cities.

    Tracking Stations
    One night in February 1962, John H. Glenn, Jr., flew over Australia. The man in the Mercury（水星）capsule（宇宙飞行容器）was alone, but friendly voices reached him by radio. Over the dark land 100 miles below, he saw sparkling lights.  It marked the city of Perth, where people had turned on their lights as a greeting to him.

For his flight, the tracking network（跟踪网络）covered 60,000 land or statute miles（法定英里）. Five hundred men worked in the stations along the route. Since his flight, the network has grown.
