【题目】How to Win a Debate Competition

Debating doesn’t mean that you can end up arguing with your opponents(对手). 1 The following tips on how to win a debate will further help you out.

2

This is very important. If you already know the debate topic that you are going to debate on, learn as much about it as you can. Research on it and then form opinions about it. Only if you know something in and out, will you be able to talk convincingly on it.

2Be confident.

When you are putting your point in front of your opponents as well as the audience, be sure of yourself. Along with the words, your body language, voice modulation (语调) and eye contact, will play a major part in your success in debating. 3

Give real life examples.

While debating, make use of very simple language, which your audience can understand very easily. Give as many real examples as you can when making a point. 4 Thus, the judges and audience will find you much more convincing.

Be descriptive.

To win any debate, there is something about the human mind that you should be aware of. The thing with us humans is that if we see something, we believe and remember it much more than something we merely hear! 5 Tell your point of view in such a way that they can actually “see” what you are saying. If you are somehow able to pull this off, there is no doubt that you will be the winner of the debate competition!

Follow the tips mentioned above, and with time, you will see yourself winning over your judges and audience.

A. Be well prepared.

B. Promote dialogue instead of arguing with your opponents.

C. Try to paint a picture in the mind of your judges and audience.

D. So participate in as many debating contests as you can.

E. To prove your point, tell something you or someone else has personally experienced.

F. So practice with friends or in front of the mirror so that you are certain of your ability.

G. Your main purpose is to convince your audience what you are saying is right.

【题目】This is a photo of a similar car I own. It’s a photo of a Skoda Fabia, I drive one too. A young guy also got out of a similar car as I was getting close to mine. I laughed and was prepared to leave. The young guy continued to have a conversation with me.

He asked me how I found the car. It turned out that it was his first day to drive the car and it was new and it was a gift from his parents and he’d just passed his driving test today! What a coincidence (巧合)!

Well, this was a special moment for Nicholas. Who gets a new car the day they learn to drive and then drives into a garage and has a talk with a woman who’s driving the same model of car? Yes, beautiful synchronicity (同步性) in full view.

I got into my car and removed my Guardian Angel key ring which I had attached to my front mirror. It was there to keep me safe. My birthday is on Guardian Angel’s Day too, so this is very special to me. I gave it to Nicholas and he was happy to receive it. Nicholas gave me a big hug.

Nicholas was not an overconfident guy. He also told me his mum was only out of hospital and now he’d be able to help her get about.

【题目】Robots make me nervous—especially the ones which seem to think for themselves. I was embarrassed to admit this till I heard that Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, felt the same way.

Gates said in an interview with the social networking and news website Reddit: “I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern.”

Well, maybe I don’t have to worry about my computer and kitchen equipment yet. After I use them I can always pull the plug. But in the future, machines might find a way to prevent us from switching them off. There’s a terrible thought!

Maybe the problem with computers too clever for us is not that they are evil like some we’ve seen in sci-fi movies. What could put us in danger is that they might be too efficient. That’s what philosopher Nick Bostrom from Oxford University believes. He says that machines are indifferent (漠然) to humans and in pursuit of their own goals, the destruction of people might be just additional damage. Bostrom gives us an example: A machine which might have as its only goal to produce as many paperclips as possible might look at human bodies as extra material for paperclips and go after you. Because it is, well, a machine, it would not take pity on you.

It’s a good thing that American writer Isaac Asimov thought about how far robots can go and left us his three rules of robotics. They state that a robot may not hurt a human being or allow the human being to come to harm.

I’m glad my machines at home are “dumb”. All my cleaner wants to take over is the carpet in my living room. Let’s hope they don’t create an appliance which wants to take over the world!

【1】The author quoted Bill Gates’ words in Paragraph 2 in order to make the text ________.

A. better-knownB. more persuasive

C. better-organizedD. more interesting

2】An intelligent paperclip machine would harm us because ________.

A. it is much cleverer than us

B. it would take over the world

C. it would see us just as material

D. it has the strong feeling of destroying us

3】How does the author feel about Isaac Asimov’s rules of robotics?

A. OptimisticB. SympathyC. DisappointedD. Regretful

4】What does the text mainly focus on?

A. The benefits of future robots.

B. The new applications of robots.

C. The concern for super intelligence.

D. The popularity of robots in the future.

Tips for waiting in line

We’ve all been there when lining up at the supermarket checkout counter, the lines next to us always seem to be moving faster than the one we are standing in. 【1】 . It has also offered tips on picking the fastest line.

2

A cart (购物车) full of items doesn’t tell the whole story. Every person requires a fixed amount of time to say hello, pay, say goodbye and clear out of the lane. And that amount of time is an average of 41 seconds per person. 3 . This means if there are five people ahead of you, each with 10 items in their carts, the waiting time will be 355 seconds. But if there is only one person ahead of you, with 50 items in the cart, the waiting time is 191 seconds. You do the math.

● Study the customers

How many people are ahead of you is one thing, and who they are is another. 4 The items in their carts are also important. For example, four bottles of the same milk will definitely go faster than four completely different items.

● Go left

According to a research, around 90 percent of people are right-handed. 5 . So heading to the opposite direction left will give you a better chance of finding a faster line.

A. Choose a “snaky line”

B. Pick someone with a full cart

C. It means a majority of people tend to naturally go to the right

D. The person at the head of the line goes to the next available counter

E. On the other hand, the time that each item takes to be rung up is only three seconds

F. For example, if they are old people, they tend to move slower and delay the checkout process

G. Now The New York Times gives you some deep understanding into the math and psychology of queuing
