    17．A study of school design has discovered that school design can influence a child's development by as much as 25 percent-over the course of an academic year．The 751 pupils using 34 classrooms across seven primary schools in Blackpool were studied by the University of Salford．Standardized data-such as age，gender（性别） and academic performance-were collected on each child at the start and end of the year，while each classroom was evaluated for quality on ten different environmental factors，such as direction for natural light，shape，color and temperature．

    Architect Peter Barrett，the study's head author，said，"This is the first time a whole assessment has been made that successfully links the overall impact directly to learning rates in schools．The impact identified is in fact greater than we imagined．"According to the results，once the differences between the"worst"and"best"designed classrooms in the study were taken into account，it was found that the influence that"best"designed classrooms bring is equivalent（相等的） to the progress that a typical pupil would be expected to make over a year．
    The results are particularly interesting as the government has introduced a controversial series of standardized templates（模板） for new school buildings，with the purpose of reducing the costs of hiring architects．The opinion on a range of strictly-defined design features replaces the previous Labour government's more architecturally luxurious Building Schools for the Future program，which was canceled by education secretary Michael Gove．He has claimed that his department's new Priority School Building Program，and its basic plans，will put an end to a situation which he believes existed only to"make architects richer"．

    My granny's cup of tea would be the Slow Food Movement．Founded by her countryman Carlo Petrini in the 1980s and still going strong，it seeks to preserve regional cuisine and the use of ingredients that are grown locally．Petrini wants to see farmers connected more directly with consumers．

    School-wide tracking decreased in U．S．schools in the 1960s and 1970s．It never died out，though．Sorting students into separate tracks for math at about junior high school age continues to be common，and other forms of tracking persist as well．
    Unlike tracking，which means sorting students into separate classrooms，ability grouping happens within classrooms．When done according to the latest research，it has proven to promote achievement．
    Ability grouping is changeable and temporary．Within classrooms，students might be divided into different learning groups dealing with materials of different levels．Any students who master concepts can move upward between groups，and the student groups might look different from subject to subject and unit to unit．For instance，a student who stands out in language arts might be at an average or slower level in math．A student who flies through multiplication tables might need extra help with fractions．Students who lag in reading can be pulled out of the classroom in small groups for practice with a tutor until their reading improves．
    Research shows ability grouping within classes has more positive benefits than tracking．However，that must be weighed against the challenges involved．In many regular classrooms，the differences between student ability levels are very big．That presents challenges for teachers and low-performing students to constantly compare themselves with students who seem to fly through school with ease．
    The rigid ability groups and tracking of the past are still with us in many schools．Likely，labels are applied with more caution than in the bad old days when some teachers gave reading groups not-so-secret code names like"Bluebirds""Robins""Crows"and"Buzzards"．But kids still know．

    The holistic movement has made many doctors look at the whole patient，not just the disease．Life-style，emotional problems and diet are just some of the factors that can affect a person's health．Holistic medicine emphasizes good diet，exercise and fresh air，all of which contribute to health．Some clinics now offer holistic medicine along with traditional treatments，so that their patients can choose a combination of treatments that suits them．One problem with holistic medicine is that it is difficult for people to be sure a doctor is reliable．To solve this，many countries want alternative doctors to form professional bodies．
