1 To keep fit / healthy, Li Hua often takes exercise and doesn’t have a sweet tooth.

2The drug is so powerful that teenagers are addicted to it.

3By the time I was 12, I had already learned about 1000 English words.

4 My parents are fond of going to concerts and often take me with them, so I’ve developed an interest in music,

本句考查了固定词组be fond of…,“喜欢”,以及“develop an interest in…”

5It was LangLang’s father who encouraged LangLang moved to Beijing, where he was very successful.

D. People keeps pets for their aesthetic need.
E. Caged pets become increasingly popular.

We keep animals as pets because they are attractive. We all have the urge to possess something that has aesthetic(审美的)value, and this is why we treasure paintings or fine furniture. Keeping pets is one form of this urge. A Siamese cat in the house can be a decorative object. Pets are playful animals and they amuse us. A little rabbit amuses us by its playful and lively runs.

Many parents find it helpful to have pets in the house for their children. Having pets is an excellent way of developing in children the love of animals and responsibility. Children get the opportunity to take on full responsibility for another creature’s life. It will be an educational experience for a child to watch the natural life cycle of an animal. There are psychological benefits for children. Pets are welcome friends for children who are lonely. Pets are excellent companions. Keeping pets means giving love and being loved. We find comfort in giving care and receiving care in return. We get pleasure from their appearance and their behavior.

As more people move into apartments, there are limitations on keeping of animals like dogs and monkeys. Therefore, caged animals have increased in popularity. Birds fall into this group. We keep them for their beautiful songs and feathers. Fish-keeping is a widespread hobby and the keeper can observe their behavior in the glass tank and study its entire life cycle. The cat is a fine house pet and it fits neatly into human habitation(居住地) without requiring its own cage. They are wonderful hunters, if there are rats around.
(5)
Pets satisfy man’s desire to care for a bit of nature. The pet owner has the responsibility for supplying those needs that nature provides. Pets are amusing and entertaining, but we are in a way doing animals harm by making them live in a human environment. Are we not enslaving(奴役)them?

When high temperatures are around the country, some things also go up. Here are four things expected to rise along with our desire to stay indoors and best the heat.
①Sales of goods that keep you cool.
Malls are high on the list of places where people often go for free air conditioning outside home in summer.Goods related to keeping cool, like air conditioners, fans or sun care items, are very popular.

Pests like stink bugs(椿象) grow fast during summer heat waves, and many agriculture experts are expecting a repeat of last year's incident that harmed fruit and crops, particularly on the East Coast.
③Energy bills
With all those air conditioners and fans working, it makes sense that energy bills will be higher than average. “Not only are people going to have extremely high energy bills for July, it will also put increased stress on power plants, and we're going to see more air pollution because of it,” says Angela Fritz.
④Violence
Heat waves may cause violence, right?
Not necessarily, says Richard Larrick, a researcher. He took a unique look at the relationship between violence and heat through baseball. Larrick and his research team examined 57,294 Major League Baseball games taking place between 1952 and 2017 and found that while heat may increase violence, there always has to be a motive. “Instead, heat affects a specific form of violence,” he said.
A. Air pollution
B. Pest population
C. Rising heat is the expected response in any summer
D. Heat does not directly lend to more violence in general
E. More and more people are worried about their expenses

Daniel was born in New Orleans, LA., in 1962, slow to walk and talk, and short. He was the tiniest in his class, but he developed a warm, outgoing nature and was popular with his peers(同龄人). And he became skillful at sports.

Baseball gave him his earliest challenge. He was an excellent players in Little League. At graduation, the coach named Daniel the team’s most valuable player.

His finest hour, though, came at a school science meeting. He entered an exhibit explaining how the circulatory system works. It was traditional, especially compared to(与相比)the modern, computerized, blinking-light models entered by other students. My wife, Sara, felt embarrassed for him.

It turned out that the other kids had made their exhibits. As the judges went on their rounds, they found that these other kids couldn’t answer their questions. Daniel answered every one. When the judges awarded the Albert Einstein Plague for the best exhibit, they gave it to him.

By the time Daniel left for college he stood six feet tall and weighed 170 pounds. He was in superb condition, but he quit baseball for English literature. I was sorry that he would not develop his athletic talent, but proud that he had made such a satisfactory decision.

One day I told Daniel that the great failing in my life had been that I didn’t take a year or two off to travel when I finished college. This is the best way, to my way of thinking, to broaden oneself. Once I had married and begun working, I found that the dream of living in another culture had disappeared. Daniel thought about this. After graduation, he worked as a waiter at college, a bike messenger and a house painter. With the money he earned, he had enough to go to Paris.

The night before he was to leave, I tossed in bed. I was trying to figure out something to say. Nothing came to mind. Maybe, I thought, it wasn’t necessary to say anything.

1How can we describe little Daniel?

A. He was thin and tall. B. He was slow in his study.

C. He was good at basketball D. He got on well with his classmates.

2Why was Daniel’s mother upset about his exhibit?

A. Because it was not to the taste of the judges. B. Because it was computerized.

C. Because it was designed by his father. D. Because it was attractive.

3How did the author feel about the major(专业)Daniel chose at college?

A. Angry. B. Satisfied.

C. Disappointed. D. Astonished.

4What can we infer according to Paragraph 6?

A. Daniel will study in Paris.

B. Daniel dropped out of college.

C. What the author said impressed Daniel greatly.

D. Daniel worked hard to pay off the money he borrowed.
