When we think about giving help to developing countries, we often think about giving money so that these countries can build schools and hospitals, buy food and medicine, or find clean water supplies. These seem to be the most important basic needs of the people we are trying to help. However, it's far from enough. Ladies and gentlemen, we've got to come up with some better ideas to help them.
I was very surprised, then, when I read about a plan to make cheap laptop computers for children in developing countries. A man called Nicholas Negroponte invented a cheap laptop computer and he planed to produce a lot and sell them to the children in developing countries at a low price after he visited a school in Cambodia. The laptop will be covered in rubber so that it is very strong and won't be damaged easily. The idea is that these computers will help the children's education as they will be able to surf the Internet. By improving children's education they should help people to find their own solutions to their problems in the long term.
Another idea to help children in developing countries is to recycle old mobile phones so that they can be used again. In the UK, and probably in many other countries too, millions of mobile phones are thrown away every year. The waste created by throwing away these old phones is very bad for the environment, so it seems to be an excellent idea to recycle them. In this way we will be able to achieve two important goals at the same time. We will reduce the waste we produce and help others. In other words, we will be able to 'kill two birds with one stone’, and that is always a good thing.

It was her giggling that drew my attention.Note taking really wasn’t all that funny.
Walking over to the offender, I asked for the    21 .Frozen, she refused to give it to me.I waited, all attention in the classroom on the quiet    22  between teacher and student. When she finally   23  it over she whispered, “Okay, but I didn’t draw it”.
It was a hand-drawn    24   of me, teeth blackened and the words “I’m stupid” coming out of my mouth.I managed to fold it up calmly. My mind,    25  , was working angrily as I struggled not to   26  .
I figured I knew the two most likely candidates for drawing the picture. It would do them some   27  to teach them a lesson, and maybe it was high time that I did it!
Thankfully, I was able to keep myself   28  .
When there were about six minutes remaining, I showed the class the picture. They were all silent as I told them how   29  this was for me.I told them there must be a reason    30   and now was their chance to write down anything they needed to tell me.Then I let them write silently while I sniffed in the back of the classroom.
As I   31   the notes later, many of them said something like, “I’ve got nothing against you,” or “I’m sorry you were hurt.” Some kids said, “We’re   32  of you.” But two notes, from the girls who I   33 were behind the picture, had a list of issues.I was too   34 , too strict…
Reading those notes, I realized that over the course of this year, instead of   35  my students, I had begun commanding them to   36 .Where I thought I was driving them to success I was    37   driving them away.

This was a lesson for both the kids and me.Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the    40  .

I must admit that his performance was 40 . He had both hands on the wheel. His eyes never left the highway and his handling was far better than I’d ever imagined it would be, 41 it still needed improving.
Several 42 ago, I was teaching him to ride his bike. We started 43 . The third grade primary school student was 44 that his training wheels were taken off. Of course it was a long evening. He 45 several times but always got up quickly and kept 46 until he mastered riding.

He will be a(n) 50 in high school this fall. This will truly be a 51 year for both of us. He’s ready to have one of the best years of his young life and I will have (a) complete mental 52 . For this is probably the last year that my baby will be at home on a(n) 5basis.
After this school year, he’ll go to college and then into the real world. Things all happen so 54  .
Now I see the time has just arrived for him to perform what he’s learned.
So, I guess you could say his driving lessons are lessons for me too. Yes, I’m being 55  that it’s his time to drive through life’s green lights and move towards his future as smoothly and skillfully as possible.

Wherever in the world you’re reading this right now, you will be aware of just how mixed modern society has become in terms of race. Within the UK, mixed-raced children are the largest   1  ethnic minority. But the reason why they were together for 11 years before they got   5  is that Hari was afraid of telling her   6  about the person that she’d fallen in love with. But after nine years together, she finally had to tell her father (her mother   13  away a few years ago). We were on tenderhooks(惶恐不安)the weekend she went up North to tell him.
It was emotional and as a family we were worried. Hari had been   14  of our family for so long, we felt for her. We knew how   15  it would be. She loved her father, but knew this would hurt him, who was a very traditional Sikh man.

At about 4 am, after hours of being unable to sleep, of shivering in the cold mountain air and trying to silence my crying kids who kept waking up, of attempting to find a comfortable sleeping position, of listening to whether there might have been a bear outside our tent, I finally couldn’t stand it any more. I complained, “Everything has gone wrong.”
My wife and I were in one tent with our two young kids. A hundred yards east away was Summit Lake, where the glorious early morning mist was shimmering(闪烁)off the water. A couple miles to the southwest was the base of the Lassen Peak Trail. The base was 8,000 feet above sea level, and huge snow dotted the scenery even in mid August. Further west still was Bumpass Hell, with steam rising up.
As the sun crept up over the edge of the Lassen peak, we fired up the camp stove and had breakfast. Half an hour later, my six-year-old daughter and I were in the parking lot of the Lassen peak trail, getting ready to go up the mountainside. We wouldn’t make it all the way, but it didn’t matter. We would see nature at its extremes: the volcanic ash that layered on the earth turning the melting snow a mysterious pink as the sun struck it; the blues of the sky shading into the blues of distant lakes, which in turn shaded into the whites and grays of the snow.
My daughter grabbed my camera. She wanted to take a photo of “the composite(混合物)”of colors. Looking out over that scenery, and seeing my daughter fascinated by nature, I felt stupid about my morning complaints.
Yes, camping is uncomfortable. And yes, there’s a lot to be said for getting out a credit card, reserving a room in a nice hotel, and going out for a fancy meal. But there’s also something wonderful about being so close to raw nature. And , as important, there’s something vital about getting young children out of their increasingly modern comfort zones and forcing them to meet the world around them.

We were standing at the top of a church tower. My father had brought me to this spot in a small town not far from our home in Rome. I wondered why.
"Look down, Elsa," Father said. I gathered all my courage and looked down. I saw the square in the center of the village. And I saw the crisscross (十字形) of twisting, turning streets leading to the square. "See, my dear," Father said gently. "There is more than one way to the square. Life is like that. If you can't get to the place where you want to go by one road, try another."
Now I understood why I was there. Earlier that day I had begged my mother to do something about the awful lunches that were served at school. But she refused because she could not believe the lunches were as bad as I said.
When I turned to Father for help, he would not help. Instead, he brought me to this high tower to give me a lesson. By the time we reached home, I had a plan.
At school the next day, I secretly poured my lunch soup into a bottle and brought it home. Then I asked our cook to serve it to Mother at dinner. The plan worked perfectly. She swallowed one spoonful and sputtered, "The cook must have gone mad! "Quickly I told what I had done, and Mother said firmly that she would take up the matter of lunches at school the next day!
In the years that followed I often remembered the lesson Father taught me. I began to work as a fashion designer two years ago. I wouldn't stop working until I tried every possible means to my goal, Father's wise words always remind me that there is more than one way to the square.

We would probably all be amazed if we watched a videotape of ourselves performing basically unconscious acts as we go about the business of the day. These unconscious acts consist of all the little personal habits that we don’t even think about, but definitely should. These are some of the things that present an image of who we are to others, and if we are careless in performing them, this image may well be other than we would like it to be.
Parents who insist that their children practice good manners and habits at home are doing them a great service, for these habits then become lifelong and the natural way they do things. It proves true that their unconscious actions will reflect a well-mannered person.
People who, for example, eat with both arms on the table at home will likely do so when out. Those who are lazy and slow in private will certainly be so in public. Children who are permitted to be disrespectful to their parents will follow suit with other adults, and will, most likely, become adults who are disrespectful of others. This is an area where the saying “practice makes perfect” may be applied.
There is an article about the actress, Audrey Hepburn, known for her beautiful carriage and posture. According to her biographer, her grandmother tied her neck to the back of her chair, at table, so that she would not drop down suddenly over her food, but rather would learn to put only small amounts of food on her spoon or fork and bring them to her mouth. This is a rather extreme “at home” method for the development of erect (直立的) posture, but it does illustrate the effectiveness of practicing good habits so that, when in public, they are instinctive.
小题1:
Which of the following expresses the main idea of the passage?
A.Parents should be responsible for their children’s good habits.
B.The actress is well known for her beautiful posture.
C.We should always be aware of our manners.
D.Without good manners, one can never be perfect.
小题2:
Those who eat with both arms on the table at home ______.
A.will probably have the same habit when they have meals in the restaurant
B.will probably change the habit when eating out with their relatives
C.will feel embarrassed when having meals with so many strangers in public
D.will always put their arms on the table no matter where they eat
小题3:
The meaning of “practice makes perfect” in the third paragraph is ______.
A.the more practice one has, the better job he will do
B.the more perfect one is, the more practice he needs
C.if one has enough practice, he will become perfect
D.perfect makes a person practice more
小题4:
Which of the following are NOT true?
A.If we are not careful about our unconscious acts, the images of ourselves presented to others will be quite undesirable.
B.The good habits formed in one’s childhood will benefit him throughout his life.
C.If parents do not care about the disrespectful attitude adopted by their children towards themselves, their children might be disrespectful of others.
D.It is unlikely that a well-mannered person will not embarrass himself in public.
