I’ve been writing for most of my life. The book Writing Without Teachers introduced me to one distinction(区别)and one practice that has helped my writing processes tremendously. The distinction is between the creative mind and the critical mind. While you need to employ both to get to a finished result, they cannot work in parallel no matter how much we might like to think so.
Trying to criticize writing on the fly is possibly the single greatest barrier to writing that most of us encounter. If you are listening to that 5th grade English teacher correct your grammar while you are trying to capture a fleeting (稍纵即逝的) thought, the thought will die. If you capture the fleeting thought and simply share it with the world in raw form, no one is likely to understand. You must learn to create first and then criticize if you want to make writing the tool for thinking that it is.
The practice that can help you past your learned bad habits of trying to edit as you write is what Elbow calls “free writing.” In free writing, the objective is to get words down on paper non-stop, usually for 15-20 minutes. No stopping, no going back, no criticizing. The goal is to get the words flowing. As the words begin to flow, the ideas will come from the shadows and let themselves be captured on your notepad or your screen.
Now you have raw materials that you can begin to work with using the critical mind that you’ve persuaded to sit on the side and watch quietly. Most likely, you will believe that this will take more time than you actually have and you will end up staring blankly at the pages as the deadline draws near.
Instead of staring at a blank start filling it with words no matter how bad. Halfway through your available time, stop and rework your raw writing into something closer to finished product. Move back and forth until you run out of time and the final result will most likely be far better than your current practices.
1.When the author says the creative mind and the critical mind “cannot work in parallel” in the writing process, he means .
A. one cannot use them at the same time B. they cannot be regarded as equally important
C. they are in constant conflict with each other D. no one can be both creative and critical
2.What prevents people from writing on is .
A. putting their ideas in raw form B. ignoring grammatical soundness
C. attempting to edit as they write D. trying to capture fleeting thoughts
3.What is the chief objective of the first stage of writing?
A. To organize one’s thoughts logically. B. To get one’s ideas down.
C. To choose an appropriate topic. D. To collect raw materials.
4.One common concern of writers about “free writing” is that .
A. it overstresses the role of the creative mind B. it does not help them to think clearly
C. it may bring about too much criticism D. it takes too much time to edit afterwards
5.In what way does the critical mind help the writer in the writing process?
A. It allows him to sit on the side and observe. B. It helps him to come up with new ideas.
C. It saves the writing time available to him. D. It improves his writing into better shape.

It is hardly surprising that clothing manufacturers (生产商)follow certain uniform standards for various features(特征)of clothes. What seems strange, however,is that the standard adopted for women is the opposite of the one for men.Take a look at the way your clothes button.Men’s clothes tend to button from the right, and women’s from the left.Considering most of the world’s population—men and women — are right-handed,the men’s standard would appear to make more sense for women. So why do women’s clothes button from the left?
History really seems to matter here.Buttons first appeared only on the clothes of the rich in the l7th century, when rich women were dressed by servants. For the mostly right-handed servants, having women’s shirts button from the left would be easier. On the other hand, having men’s shirts button from the fight made sense, too. Most men dressed themselves, and a sword drawn from the left with the right hand would be less likely to get caught in the shirt.
Today women are seldom dressed by servants, but buttoning from the left is still the standard for them.Is it interesting? Actually,a standard, once set, resists change. At a time when all women’s shirts buttoned from the left,it would have been risky for any single manufacturer to offer women’s shirts that buttoned from the right. After all, women had grown so used to shirts which buttoned from the left and would have to develop new habits and skills to switch.Besides, some women might have found it socially awkward to appear in public wearing shirts that buttoned from the fight, since anyone who noticed that would believe they were wearing men’s shirts.
1.What is surprising about the standard of the clothing industry?
A.It has been followed by the industry for over 400 years. |
B.It is different for men’s clothing and women’s. |

A.They tended to wear clothes without buttons. |
B.They were interested in historical matters. |
C.They were mostly dressed by servants. |
D.They drew their swords from the left. |
3.Women’s clothes still button from the left today because _______.
A.adopting men’s style is improper for women |
B.manufacturers should follow standards |
C.modern women dress themselves |
D.customs are hard to change |
4. The passage is mainly developed by ________.
A.analyzing causes |
B.making comparisons |
C.examining differences |
D.following the time order |

Boxing is a fist fighting sport between two matched combatants (对手) wearing padded gloves. A boxer’s primary aim is to land as many blows as possible to the head and torso (躯干) of the opponent, using strength and speed to dominate the contest. One of the oldest sports still practiced, boxing dates back to thousands of years ago. Today the sport is popular in many parts of the world and encompasses (包括) both amateur and professional matches.
For most of the 20th century boxing attracted huge fan and media attention in the United States. Some boxing champions became legendary, larger-than-life figures, such as Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, and Muhammad Ali. Criticized to varying degrees throughout its history for its violent nature and high injury rate, boxing has somehow always managed to survive——and even thrive——as a sport.
Modern boxing regulations are based upon the 12 rules set out by British boxing officials in the mid-19th century. These rules became known as the Marquess of Queensberry Rules, named after the 8th Marquess of Queensberry, John Sholto Douglas, who sponsored and published them. In addition to in-the-ring rules, modern boxing also has specific regulations regarding eligibility for the fighters themselves.
The modern rules for professional and amateur boxing differ, but both types of contests are divided into time periods called rounds. In professional boxing, each round lasts three minutes; in amateur boxing, two minutes. A one-minute rest period between rounds is standard. Amateur contests consist of three rounds; professional contests may consist of up to 12 rounds. A bell is usually sounded by a timekeeper to begin and end each round.
A key step in making boxing safer and more respectable was the introduction of gloves, ending brutal bare-knuckle competition. Boxing gloves are heavily padded to soften the impact of the blow and to protect the hands of the boxer. As an added protection, the hands are taped before being placed in the gloves, which are essentially huge mittens. Professional gloves usually weigh between 170 and 226g; amateur gloves average 226 to 340g.

D. this is because there are many legendary boxers
3.Which of the following facts about boxing is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. The time set for a round. B. The weight of gloves.
C. The size of boxing rings. D. The signal to begin and end each round.
4.The author’s purpose in writing this passage is __________.
A. to give a general introduction to the sport of boxing
B. to advertise a band of boxing-related product
C. to discourage people from enjoying this violent sport
D. to get support for a sport with long tradition
5.Which of the following statements can best describe the sport of boxing as a whole?
A. It is a brutal and violent sport, with little popularity in modern times.
B. It is a traditional sport, with little room for improvement.
C. It is a controversial sport, which nevertheless enjoys great public support.
D. It is strictly professional sport with rigid and exclusive rules.

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef will lose most of its coral cover by 2050 and, at worst, the world’s largest coral system could collapse by 2100 because of global warming, a study recently said.
The study by Queensland University’s Center for Marine Studies, commissioned (委托) by the Worldwide Fund for Nature, said that the destruction of coral on the Great Barrier Reef was unavoidable due to global warming, regardless of what actions were taken now. “Under the worst-case scenario, coral populations will collapse by 2100 and the reestablishment of coral reefs will be highly unlikely over the following 200-500 years,” said the report entitled “Implications (可能的影响) of Climate Change for Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.”[来源:学|科|网]
The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest living reef formation stretching 2,000 km north to south along Australia’s northeast coast. “Only if global average temperature change is kept to below two degrees Celsius can the Reef have any change of recovering from the predicted damage,” the report said. Coral has a narrow comfort zone and is highly stressed by a temperature rise of less than one degree Celsius. Water temperature rises of less than one degree coincided (同时发生) with the world’s worst recorded coral bleaching (颜色变淡) period in 1988. The warmer water forces out the algae (海藻) that give coral its color and, if all are lost, the coral dies and the reef will die out. In 1988, 16 percent of the world’s coral died, with 46 percent of the Indian Ocean coral destroyed.
Scientists express water temperatures to rise this century by between two and six degrees Celsius. “There is little to no evidence that corals can adapt fast enough to match even the lower temperature rise,” said the report. Over-fishing and pollution from coastal farms were also contributing to the destruction of coral on the Great Barrier Reef.
The Great Barrier Reef supports huge fishing and tourism industries. Even under favorable conditions tourists would only be able to experience real corals in reef “theme parks”.
1.The underlined word “scenario” in Paragraph 2 probably means .
A. imagination B. intention C. expectation D. prediction
2.From the passage, we can infer that .
A. corals have no difficulty in adapting the temperature change
B. if we take quick actions we can avoid the destruction of corals
C. we can find corals in many areas of the seas or oceans
D. the algae help corals to live
3.Which of the following is NOT the cause of the destruction of coral on the Great Barrier Reef?
A. Direct sunshine. B. Over-fishing.
C. Global warming. D. Pollution.
4.By saying “Coral has a narrow comfort zone” (Para. 3), the author means .
A. coral can only live in a small area
B. coral prefers a crowded place
C. coral can hardly adapt to the temperature change
D. coral grows best in a small area
