    4．On the evening of January 26，1905，Frederick Wells，a manager at the Premier  Diamond Mine in South Africa，was making his daily inspection when he suddenly saw a  reflection on the wall．（36）F He used a knife to get it out and found that it was 10cm  long，6cm high and 5cm thick and weighed about three quarters of a kilo．（37）CHe  was now even more certain that it was worthless，but just in case，he sent it to be  checked．
    It's lucky that he did．The stone later became known as the Cullinan Diamond，the  biggest diamond in the world．It was perfectly clear，and twice the size of any other  diamond ever found．The Cullinan was sold to the local government for￡150，000．（38）DThe discoverer himself received a reward of￡3，500．
    The important job of cutting the diamond to get full value from it was given to Joseph  Asscher，a famous diamond cutter from Amsterdam in Holland．（39）G On February  10，1908，Joseph Asscher prepared himself for the greatest job of his life．He placed his  special diamond-cutting tool and hit it，but the tool broke．Fortunately，though，the  diamond wasn't damaged．（40）AThis time it was separated perfectly into three large  sections，which were later separated again into mne main diamonds，plus many smaller  ones．The largest piece is called Cullinan I，or the Star of Africa，and is now on display in  the Tower of London．
