If you are ever lucky to be invited to a formal dinner party in Paris, remember that the French have their own way of doing things, and that even your finest manners may not be “correct” by French custom. For example, if you think showing up promptly at the time given on the invitation, armed with gifts of wine and roses, complimenting your hostess on her cooking, laughing heartily at the host's jokes and then leaping up to help the hostess will make you the perfect guest, think again.

Here Madame Nora Chabal, the marketing director of the Ritz Hotel in paris, explained how it works.

The first duty of the guest is to respond to the invitation within 48 hours. And, the guest may not ask to bring a guest because the hostess has chosen her own.

Flowers sent in advance are the preferred gift. They may also be sent afterwards with a thank-you note. It is considered a very bad form to arrive with s gift of flowers in hand there by forcing the hostess to deal with finding a vase when she is too busy to do that. See, that's the logic! The type of flowers sent has a code of its own, too. One must never send chrysanthemums because they are considered too humble a flower for occasion. Carnations are considered bad luck, and calla lilies are too reminiscent(令人联想)of funerals(葬礼). A bouquet of red roses is a declaration of romantic intent. Don't send those unless you mean it, and never to a married hostess. And though the French love wine, you must never bring a bottle to a dinner party. Why, it's as if you feared your hosts would not have enough wine on land, and that's an insult. You may, however, offer a box of chocolates which the hostess will pass after dinner with coffee.

If an invitation is for eight o'clock, the considerate guest arrives at 8:15. Guests who arrive exactly on time or early are mere thoughtless ones who are not giving the hostess those last few minutes she needs to deal with details and

crises, The “correct” guest arrives between 15 to 20 minutes after the hour because dinner will be served exactly 30 minutes past the time on the invitation.

(1) Which of the following statements is right according to the French custom?

(2) Which of the following is right about sending flowers?

B.If someone is ill in hospital, send carnations.

C.If you are invited to a dinner party, send red roses to the hostess.

D.If you are in love with someone, send red roses.

(3) If you are in love with someone, send red roses, what should you do?

[ ]

A.Bring a bouquet of flowers when you go to the party.

B.Send a bouquet of flowers afterwards with a thank-you note.

C.Bring a bottle of wine instead of a bouquet of flowers.

D.The hostess will never mind of you send flower or not.

(4) What is the passage mainly about?

[ ]

Working AT home is increasing in popularity as a means of escaping from nine-to-five office life. Why work under the constant watch of your boss when you can work in front of the TV in your carpet slippers? Armed with all the office essentials—telephone, computer, e-mail and fax, many workers believe they can work as effectively as their colleagues in the office. Being able to work wherever you like: from a busy city to a beautiful village, and make working from home an attractive choice, you can even work on a canal boat, like one Internet firm in the Midlands, US.

So what will become of the office of tomorrow? I believe it is likely that many could disappear into cyberspace. To minimize office overheads in inner-city areas, companies will apply a workforce made up of a network of home workers linked by an advanced communication and information system. A central processing computer would be controlled by the manager who sends out work schedules and oversees the activity of each employee.

As a successor to the Web Cam, a video screen would be created, as the need for more natural form of interaction than e-mail or telephone becomes greater. Capturing the mood and expressions of work colleagues, managers would have the ability to view several employees at once on their screen. Employees would be encouraged to feed any information that may be useful to fellow workers into the computer to make the company work more effectively. As the company's life blood, the computer would contain a record of all conversations and correspondence for future reference, and hold confidential information such as accounts in password protected areas. In the office of tomorrow, with daily life captured in detail, the case for firing employees could be more clear cut.

科目:高中英语 来源:江苏省教育集团树人学校09-10学年高二下学期期中考试(英语) 题型:阅读理解

“I find myself glancing at my watch to see how long I’ve been standing in line,” she said. “Everywhere I go, I notice if the dumpster(垃圾罐)gates are open or if there’s trash in the parking lot.” Ms. Clark is a “mystery shopper”, one of thousands of contract workers that companies hire to pretend as regular customers in order to judge customer service, cleanliness and whether a store is selling a product that meets company specifications (规格).

Mystery shoppers can be found or, rather, not found, everywhere from restaurants and automotive shops to convenience stores and department stores. They play a constant cat-and-mouse game with store and restaurant employees and managers. However it’s not all fun and games. Once in the field, a mystery shopper will typically visit several stores or restaurants per hour, taking mental notes while inside, then jotting down physical notes after they leave.

It’s important for mystery shoppers to be as exact as possible, because the client companies are looking for data they can use to improve their service. The questionnaire won’t say, “Does the trash can need to be emptied?” What an educated shopper will say is, “The trash can to the left of the front door was overflowing with 10 pieces of trash on the ground.” Companies don’t need opinion but facts.

Nowadays mystery shoppers are armed with a number of high-tech devices, such as a digital scale and a digital thermometer, as well as a handheld PC for recording the entire experience. It’s a challenging job but a rewarding one. Mystery shoppers can be full time or part time, but the full-time workers tend to stick to standard mystery shopping while part-timers often choose the less complex reward-based programs. In those , the shoppers stay disguised(装扮的) only until the “shop” is finished, and then reveal (透漏) themselves to the store management and award prizes to employees who provided excellent service.

To be a mystery shopper, it’s important to be a good observer, but sometimes it’s important to have the right profile(外表), too. Companies often hire shoppers from particular backgrounds to better blend in with clients’ regular customers. If a secret shopper will be sent in, for example, to do a high-end automotive shop, the candidate must have a particular profile that meets a high-end, luxury car-type buyer profile. “It’s a challenge to perform your shop without being discovered,” Ms. Clark said, “because most of the people that we work for are very aware of the mystery shopping program.”

67. According to the text a “mystery shopper” would not have to        .

A. sign a contract with the employer     B. travel a lot around the city

C. provide exact facts to the company D. fill in questionnaires

68. We learn from the text that Ms. Clark        .

A. visits some shops regularly and sometimes does something special

B. pretends to be a shopper and evaluates the services

C. is a government official looking into the services

D. is a manager of a company offering good services

69. People are willing to become a mystery shopper mainly because they can        .

A. get the best service and get paid at the same time

B. play a cat-and-mouse game with shop employees and managers

C. do the job either full time or part time and get paid well

D. observe clearly what happens in the shops

70. What does the underlined word “those” in the 4th paragraph refer to?

A. The shops where the mystery shoppers go.

B. The less complex reward-based programs.

C. Part-time jobs.

D. Excellent services.
