Blind from birth, I have never had the opportunity to see myself and have been completely dependent on the image I create in the eyes of others.
There are those who   36   that since I can’t see, I obviously also cannot   37 . Very often people will talk with me at the top of their lungs. Conversely to this, people will also often   38 , assuming that since my eyes don’t work, my ears don’t either. For example, when I go to the airport and ask the ticket agent for   39 to the plane, he or she will always pick up the phone and call a ground hostess in a very low voice. "Hi, Jane, wave got a 76 here." I have concluded that the word "  40 " is not used because they are unwilling to inform me of my condition of which I may not have been previously   41 .
On the other hand, others know that of course I can hear, but believe that I can’t talk. Once I became ill and was hospitalized. Immediately after I was    42 , I was wheeled down to the X-ray room. Just at the door sat an elderly woman(judging from  her voice) asked the orderly(护工) who had been wheeling me:" What is your name?" “What’s your name?” the orderly   43  to me. "Harold Krents", I replied. "Harold Krents", he repeated. "When was he born?" "When were you born?"…This continued for about five minutes before I finally interrupted, "Look, this is absolutely  44  . OK, I can’t see, but it’s go to become pretty  45  to both of you that I don’t need an interpreter(翻译)." “He says he doesn’t  need an interpreter," the orderly reported to the woman.
The   46  misconception of all is the view that because I cant see, I can’t  47 . I was turned down by over forty law firms,   48  my qualifications included a cum laude degree from Harvard Law School. The  49 to find jobs, the continuous   50 of being told that it was impossible for a blind person to   51 law, the rejection letter, not based on my lack of   52  but rather on my disability, will always remain one of the most upsetting experiences of my life.
53 , the Department of Labor issued laws that demand equal  54 opportunities for the disabled. The business community’s response has been   55 . The attitude towards the disabled is beginning to change.

I came to study in the United States a year ago .Yet I did not know the real American society until I was injured in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court.
After the accident .my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was astonished. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury, I’d have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer .Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him.
But every day I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time .The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $215.
My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to dismiss him. And he made me pay him $770.
Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Due to my inexperience, I told the insurance company the date I was leaving America. Knowing that, they played for time…and I left without getting a cent.
My experiences taught me two things about America: firstly, in a country like America money is everything. It is more important than friendship, honor or professional morality (道德). Secondly, foreigners are still being unfairly treated. So when we talk about America, we should see both its good and bad sides.
小题1:The author’s roommate offered to help him because________.

B.he thought it was a chance to make some money
C.he knew the doctor was a very good one
D.he wanted the author to have a good lawyer
小题2: A good doctor is essential for the author to __________.

B.talk with the person responsible for the accident
C.recover before he leaves America
D.eventually get the responsible party to pay for his injury
小题3:The word“charge”in the third paragraph means_________ .
A.be responsibleB.accuseC.ask as a priceD.claim
小题4:Both the doctor and the lawyer in this passage are very__________.
A.friendlyB.selfish C.professional D.busy
小题5:What conclusion can you draw from the story?
A.Going to court is something very common in America.
B.One must be very careful while driving a car.
C.There are more bad sides in America than good sides.
D.Money is more important than other things in the US.

III.阅读理解(20×2)
When Sir Winston Churchill , the great British prime minister, reached his eightieth birthday in November 1954, he was presented with his portrait by a well-known modern artist, Granham Sutherland. The painting had been ordered and paid by the members of Parliament(国会), who wanted to honor the Grand Man of World war II.
Sir Winston and Lady Churchill were deeply moved by this mark of respect and affection. Neither of them, of course, allowed the donors(捐赠者) to see how much they both disliked the portrait. “It makes me look stupid—which I am not !” Churchill protested in private. Publicly, he only said that it was “a fine example of modern art”. His friends smiled: it was well-known that Sir Winston didn’t care for modern art.
Churchill was so unhappy about the portrait that finally his wife had it destroyed. Churchill died at ninety in January 1965. lady Churchill followed him in 1977. Shortly after her death, the public learned what had happened to Sutherland’s painting, and a heated argument broke out. The painter was understandably sad. The artistic community, shocked and angry, claimed that the destruction of the picture had been a crime. Historians said that they regretted the disappearance of a historical document. All agreed that Churchills didn’t have the right to do what they had done.
Well—did they ? A good part of the public felt that the owner of a portrait had the right to get rid of it if it made him so unhappy. The question, however, has been raised many times before: who has the right to a work of art—the sitter, the owner, the donor or the artist who created it?  And when the painting is the portrait of a historical figure, should the right of posterity (后代) be considered, as the historians claimed?
1. To have Churchill’s portrait painted was the idea of ______.
A.a well-known modern artist       B.Parliament
C.a friend of Churchill             D.the public
2. Which of the following is true ?
A. Churchill liked the portrait but his wife not
B. Churchill didn’t like the portrait because he didn’t like the painter
C. Churchill liked the portrait because it was a fine modern art.
D . Churchill didn’t like the portrait and nor did his wife
3. When Churchill said it was “a fine example of modern art”, he was ______.
A. dishonest           B. joking        C. praising the portrait          D. not been straight
4.When was the destruction of the portrait known to the public?
A . As soon as it happened             B.After Churchill died in 1965
C. Soon after Lady Churchill’s death     D. Not until recently
5. How did people reacted to the news?
A. People of the artistic community were all very sad.
B. The historians felt more strongly against it than the artistic community.
C.All people agreed that Chutchills had no right to destroy the picture.
D. while some were upset, quite a few people believed the Churchills had the right to destroy it.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
When I worked in Swaziland, one day we went to an orphanage (孤儿院).There we found a beautiful little girl named Tanzile.I gave her a sweet and she said something back to me in Si-swati, which the nurse next to me translated, “She wants another one — to give to her little sister.” I said “of course”.When we were going to leave, we passed by Tanzile’s house to say goodbye. To our surprise she seemed to be holding on to that extra sweet I had given her.I remember saying to the nurse “this little darling is clever — she has taken two for herself.”
But the nurse told us, “Tanzile is 7 now.Two years ago her mum and dad both died of AIDS.She was separated from her sister who was three at the time.Tanzile has not laid eyes on her since. But from then on whenever Tanzile receives anything from anyone, including food — she refuses to accept it, unless they give her two.” In fact, in the little mud hut where she lives, we find a pile of old things which she has been collecting to give to her sister one day.
People sometimes look at faces of African children and think that they are somehow different from our kids — that somehow they don’t feel pain or love. But that is not true.Their pain is deep. And so is their love.I can still remember the nurse trying to convince her that “if someone gives you food, you must accept it — even if it is only one piece and not two — for your own health.” And it was so hard for us to keep the tears from our eyes as she shook her head. Her hope and her love was all that she had.It mattered more than anything else. When I returned home that day, I was shocked to find that this was not an isolated story but others in the hospital knew of orphans just like Tanzile — waiting with a little pile of things in their hut, for their lovers who they haven’t seen so long.
I think of that old song — “when we’re hungry, love will keep us alive.”
56.From the passage we can learn Tanzile       .
A.is very clever                         B.knows her sister has died
C.has stored a lot for her sister          D.doesn’t like sweets
57.How old was her sister when the author met with Tanzile?

The first time I decided to leave home was when 1 was in high schoo1.1 was having trouble getting along will my parents.I had about a hundred dollars in my pocket, and so I thought about leaving home, It took me 6my three weeks away from home when I stared to feel homesick. Living on my own is a totally different experience for three main reasons:being more responsible, more decisive and more creative
First of all,I have learned that living on my own requires that I become more responsible. My parents usually tell me to carry out my work and duties almost every day.men I fail to do the work,I only get scolded. Besides,I think that it is better for everyone to love their parents and themselyes before they love anyone else. They should leam how to live on their own. but meanwhile learn how to follow every technique that was given to them by their Parents. They can make use of their freedom of choice to lead to wherever they want。
