What is it that you love to do but never feel that you get it quite right? Perhaps you don't even try any more because you think what you do is not enough.
Discouragement seems to follow us a good part of the time, however hard we work, it seems that there is someone else who can do it much better.

The Fish I didn't Catch
I still remember my first fishing experience as if it were but yesterday. I have been many times in my life (like when I got admitted to the best school), but never more intensely sothan when I received that first fishing from my uncle.
My uncle, who knew by long where pickerel(梭鱼)would gather, placed me at the most favorable point. I threw out my line and waited anxiously for a bite, the float up and down rapidly on the surface of the water. But nothing came of it. "Try again," said my uncle. Suddenly the float out of sight. "Now for it," thought I; "here is a fish at last."
I made a strong pull, only to bring up a tangle of weeds. Again and again I cast out my line with aching arms, and drew it back empty. I looked at my uncle ."Try once more," hesaid;"we fishermen must have
Suddenly something tugged at my line, and swept off with it into deep water. Pulling it up quickly, I saw a fine pickerel wriggling in the sun. "Uncle!”I cried, looking back in uncontrollable , "I've got a fish!”"Not yet," said my uncle. Just then, I saw the scared fish shooting into the middle of the stream, my hook hung from the line. I had lost my prize.
My heart sank with it and I felt like a failure. We tend to speak of the of childhood as matters of little importance those of grown-ups. Controlled by reason and self-respect, the sorrows of grown-ups the social customs and rules of conduct the sorrows of childhood are a complete abandonment to the passion. The doll's nose is broken, and the whole world with it.
So, overcome with my bitter disappointment, I refused to be ,even by my uncle's guarantee that there were more fish in the river. He refitted my bait, and, putting the pole again in my hands, told me to try my luck once more.
"But remember, boy," he said, with a smile, "it's no use to boast of(自夸)anything before it's done, nor then, either, it speaks for itself."
How often I have been reminded of the fish that I did not catch !When I hear people talking about their distant aims as if they had already been achieved, I call to mind that by the riverside, and the wise caution of my uncle takes the form of a proverb of application: "NEVER BOAST OF YOUR FISH BEFORE YOU CATCH HIM."

In 1972, I returned to Miami Beach High School to speak to the drama class. Afterward I asked the drama teacher any of my English teachers are still there. Irene Roberts, he tells me, is in the class down the hall.
I was no one special in Miss Roberts’ class — just another student who did okay work. I don’t recall any one special bit of wisdom she passed on. Yet I cannot forget her for language, for ideas and for her students. I now, many years later, that she is the perfect example of a teacher. I’d like to say something to her, I say, but I don’t want to her from a class. Nonsense, he says, she’ll be to see you.
The drama teacher Miss Roberts into the hallway where stands this 32-year-old man she last saw at 18. “I’m Mark Medoff,” I tell her. “You were my 12th-grade English teacher in 1958.” She her head to one side and looks at me, as if this angle might remember me in her . And then, though armed with a message I want to in many words, I can’t think up anything more memorable than this: “I want you to know,” I say, “you were to me.”
And there in the hallway, this lovely woman, now nearing age, this teacher who doesn’t remember me, begins to weep; and she encircles me in her arms.
this moment, I begin to sense that everything I will ever know, everything I will ever pass to my students, is an inseparable part of a legacy(遗产) of our ancestors.
Irene Roberts holds me in her arms and through her tears whispers my cheek, “Thank you.” And then, with the briefest of looks into my forgotten face, she back into her classroom, to what she has done thousands of days through all the years of my .
On reflection, maybe those were, , just the right words to say to Irene Roberts. Maybe they are the very words I would like to speak to all those teachers through my life, the very words I would like spoken to me one day by some returning student: “I want you to know you were important to me.”

Now you’re a fool for helping. “I don’t want to get involved” seems to have become a national motto. One summer I was driving from my hometown of Tahoe City, California to New Orleans, Louisiana. In the middle of the desert, I passed a young man standing by the roadside. He had his out and held a gas can in his other hand. I drove right by him. There was a time you’d be called a jerk (混蛋) for passing by somebody .
Several days later I was still about the hitchhiker (搭便车的人), about how I didn’t even lift my foot the accelerator (加速踏板) for him. “Does anyone stop any more?” I wondered. I recalled Blanche DuBois’s famous line—”I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.” Was that these days? One way to test this would be for a person to journey the US without any money, just on the good will of others. What would happen? Would he find food, shelter and support?
The idea intrigued (激起兴趣) me.
The week I 37, I realized that I had never done something truly crazy. I decided to really do it: travel from the Pacific to the Atlantic without a penny. I would only accept of rides, food and places to sleep. For six weeks I hitched 82 rides and covered 4,223 miles across 14 states. I was treated kindly I went. I was by people’s readiness to help a stranger.
In Oregon, a house painter named Mike the cold weather and asked if I had a coat. I didn’t, so he gave me a big green army-style jacket. A lumber-mill worker in Michigan named Tim invited me to a dinner with his family in their shabby house. Then he offered me a tent. I refused, but Tim insisted, packing it into my bag himself. I found people were generally compassionate. Hearing I had no money and would take none, people bought me food or with them whatever they happened to have. Those who had the to give often gave the most.
I’m to all the people I met for their rides, their food, their shelter and their gifts. My faith in ordinary folks was . I was proud to live in a country where people were still willing to help. In spite of everything, you can still depend on the of strangers.
