Re-gifting only with care

At this busiest gift-giving time of the year, many of us wonder what to do with the unwanted presents we get. Is it all right to re-gift--to give the unwanted present to someone else?

A gift is a symbol of what a relationship means to us. The best gifts meet the needs or satisfy the desires of the receiver. A gift should be about pleasing the other person, not showing off the taste, wealth or power of the giver. We should give with the other person, not ourselves in mind.

Still, a friend, colleague or family member who knows us well might now and then buy us something that is the last thing we'd buy for ourselves. People in long-term relationships can be surprised at the choices in clothes, music or gadgets(小玩意) made by their friends or relatives.

Re-gifting creates a dilemma(窘境) because we don't want to hurt the feelings of the gift-giver, but we also feel it's wasteful not to use something that might benefit someone else.

Re-gifting avoids waste and repays a debt of gratitude we owe to someone else, but it presents the risk that the original giver will be hurt if she or he discovers what we did.

Following are a few guidelines for re-gifting:

  -Don't use the gift.

-Re-gift soon, so you don't risk re-gifting to the original giver.

-Make sure that the new receiver doesn't know the original giver or is unlikely to run intohim or her.

If there's a possibility that the original giver could learn about the re-gift or if he or she expects to see you wearing the gift, consider asking for permission. Let him or her know how much you appreciate the thought behind the gift. A person who understands that a gift is intended to be pleasing will understand.

As long as the person who gave the unwelcome gift doesn't mind or won't find out, you can re-gift with a clear conscience. Besides, you can be sure that at least one of the gifts you've received was given originally to someone else.

E:\Zujuan\WCFUpload\Upload\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$DI00.718\全品高考网      Bicycles are a great way to get around. They’re fun to ride, especially down hills. And, as you speed along the road, you might also think of ways in which you could improve your bike— make it safer, more efficient, or more comfortable. In fact, the two-wheeled machines make for some cool science projects.
This year's International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), held last May in Cleveland, featured(had)three bicycle projects from three countries. Like many of the other experiments presented at ISEF, the bike projects showed that some of the most interesting scientific research often begins by taking a closer look at things you care about.
Renato Angulo Chu had even grander ambitions(雄心). The 12th-grader from Lima, Peru, wanted to address some of his country's economic troubles.
"I see a problem in my country," Renato said. "If you go to the forests in Peru, in some places you cannot find electricity. If you go with my bicycle, you can turn on the lights."
Renato, 16, spent 3 years designing his special Multibike. The device looks like a fixed exercise bike. It has wires fixed along the frame(结构) and a blender strapped(fastened) to the back. Turning the pedals(踏蹬) operates the blender. The same principle can be used to sharpen knives or sweep city streets.
The Multibike can work either as a fixed bike or as a bicycle able to travel city streets and country roads. It's made from inexpensive materials, and the user gets exercise while pedaling to operate a machine.
"You pedal the bike, and you can mix any drink you want," Renato said. More importantly, he added, the same concept(概念) could be used to bring light to houses in remote regions of the rainforest.
46. What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A. ISEF is an exhibiton displaying bicycle experiments designed by students.
B. Looking closely at things you are concerned about can lead to scientific research.
C. Renato’s improvement of the bicycle has solved the country’s great problem.
D. Renato’s special bicycle will soon be put into use in remote areas.’
48. The underlined word “address” in the third paragraph probably has the same meaning as _______.
A. make address written        B. give up            C. work at             D. speak at
49. Renato’s special Multibike has all the following EXCEPT  ________.
A. making knives sharp                       B. mixing any kind of drinks

50. It can be inferred that Renato’s special bicycle is mainly designed for ________.

Sep. 30   I moved into the dormitory today—an ugly building and near a busy main road, too. My room is small but quite pleasant. I must get some posters for the walls, though. I met a few fellow students at supper (The food was awful). They all look much younger than me. They are, of course!
Oct. 07    Lectures began last Monday. So far they haven’t been very interesting (except for the man who gives lectures on drama). Personally, I’d rather go to the library and read, but I have to attend ten lectures a week. Those are the “rules”! Well, at least you meet people there.
Oct. 12    I really don’t like life in the dormitory at all. The food is bad and the students are noisy. They stay up half the night and play games just outside my room. When on earth do they sleep? When do they work? Besides, I don’t like my room. It’s just like living in a box! It looks even smaller now with the posters on the wall.
Oct. 26    I tried to explain some of my problems to my supervisor (导师) today. She listened—but that was about all. “You have to go to lectures, you know, Ann,” she told me. “And the dormitory is cheap and convenient.” “Cheap and convenient”! Well, it isn’t “cheap” if you can’t eat the food and it isn’t “convenient” if you can’t sleep at night!
Oct. 30    I can’t believe it! Three other students—I met them at a lecture and they’re all about my own age —have invited me to share a flat with them. It’s in an old house and it has its own kitchen, so we can cook for ourselves. And my room—right at the top of the house—is fantastic!
Nov. 10   I moved into my new room last Sunday. I feel really happy. Life is going to be much more fun from now on!
56. Ann’s diary is mainly about __________.
A. food                   B. her dormitory life            C. the lectures          D. her fellow student
57. Ann complained (抱怨) about the students because __________.
A. they disturbed her            B. they did not work      C. they did not sleep      D. they looked younger
58. In her new room, Ann was __________.
A. interested          B. sorry                            C. excited                 D. shocked

If you’re like most students, you may find it challenging to learn a foreign language. However, there are a few tips you can use in order to earn a top grade —— as well as actually use the skills you’ve learned.
One of the most important and basic lessons in dealing with a foreign language is to learn and understand each concept and lesson before moving on to the next one. If you don’t understand one concept but move on to the next chapter anyway, you’re less likely to understand the new material.
Learning a new language is not only an academic tool, but can help you in your everyday life as well. Being good at another language can help you communicate with other people, and help you when traveling to foreign countries, and even make your resume look better.
And it is important to learn correct pronunciation as soon as possible for poor pronunciation can be hard to break. Native speakers of the language as well as others fluent in the language you are learning will appreciate your efforts to learn correct pronunciation.
Gather outside materials such as books, study guides, books on tape, and travel books to aid you in learning the language. Your textbooks can’t possibly teach you everything you need to know, so seeking outside sources is generally a good rule of thumb to keep in mind.
A significant motivator in learning a foreign language is traveling to the country where the language is spoken. That way, you can see firsthand how the language is used, learn the culture, and meet native speakers of the language. Native speakers appreciate sincere attempts of others who take the time to learn their language.
Seek out native speakers of your new language in your school or neighborhood. They can help you with many skills, including pronunciation, and they can provide immediate feedback on your progress.
