    The easy way out isn't always easiest . I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug , my husband of one month , to a special meal . I glanced through my cookbook and chose a menu(菜谱) which included homemade bread . Knowing the bread would take time , I started on it as soon as Doug left for work . As I was not experienced in cooking , I thought if a dozen was good , two dozens would be better , so I doubled（加倍）everything . As Doug loved oranges , I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl . Soon there was a sticky dough (面团) covered with ugly yellowish marks . Realizing I had been defeated , I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn't have to face Doug laughing at my work , I went on preparing the rest of the meal , and , when Doug got home , we sat down to eat Cornish chicken with rice . He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed . Twice he got up and went outside , saying he thought he heard a noise . The third time he left , I went to the windows to see what he was doing . Looking out , I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin , holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container . When I came out of the house , he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in our rubbish bin . Picking up the stick again , he held the lid up enough for me to see . I felt cold . But I stepped closer and looked harder . Without doubt it was my work . The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast (酵母)made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing .It looked like some unknown being from outer space. I could see why Doug was so shaken. I had to admit what the 'living thing” was and why it was there . I don't know who was more embarrassed(尴尬)by the whole thing － Doug or me.

    The United States: Fliers may want to have their tickets in hand before catching their planes, but the airline companies are doing everything they can to bring forward cost-saving ticketless flight—no paper needed, just a ticket number and a photo ID (带照片的身份证).

    The "Thumbs-Up"

    　　While Western culture has become used to the thumbs-up as a good signal(probably coming from World War II pilots using the signal to show that they were "good to go" with ground crews), there are cultures where a thumbs-up may land you in trouble．In West Africa, as well as Greece, Italy and Middle East, the thumbs-up is pretty much the biggest insult(侮辱)．

    　　Rather more interesting is a thumbs-up in Germany and in parts of Japan－they just see it as the hand signal for the number one．

    The "A-OK"

    　　This sign is mainly used by divers(潜水员)to mean "OK"(to prevent being confused with the thumbs-up sign, which means "rise")．Basically the meaning comes out as "great", or "completely fine"．However, in a few countries in Europe, people may think you抮e telling them that you think they抮e a 'zero挘?/P>

    The "V Sign"

    　　The sign comes in two formats：one with the palm(手掌)faced outwards, and one with the palm inwards．In America they mean the same thing －"victory"．However, if the outside of your hand is facing your target(目标), you抮e giving somebody a long-built insult in Great Britain and many English-speaking countries such as Australia, Ireland and New Zealand．Winston Churchill famously used the "incorrect" version of the V sign during the early years of the war, turning the outside inside later．The V sign is also considered rude in Italy．

    The "Corna"

    　　The corna hand gesture has most recently been adopted by fans of rock and heavy metal music．Nowadays many Americans use the gesture simply to mean "rock on", or in support of the University of Texas in Austin(known as the "Hook抏m Horns")．Today it is still popular in Spain, Brazil and Slovakia．Historically, however, the symbol possibly dates back to Ancient Greece．

         The Internet has led to a huge increase in credit-card fraud. Your card information could even be for
    sale in an illegal web site.
         Web sites offering cheap goods and services should be regarded with care.
         On-line shoppers who enter their credit-card information may never receive the goods they thought
    they bought. The thieves then go shopping with your card number - or sell the information over the
    Internet. Computers hackers have broken down security systems, raising questions about the safety of

    However, there are a few simple steps you can take to keep from being cheated.
         Ask about your credit-card firm’s on-line rules: Under British law, cardholders have to pay the first

        And shop only at secure sites; Send your credit-card information only if the Web site offers advanced
    secure system.
         If the security is in place, a letter will appear in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. The
    Website address may also start https: //-the extra “s” stands for secure. If in doubt, give your credit-card
    information over the telephone.
         Keep your password safe: Most on-line sites require a user name and password before placing an
    order. Treat your passwords with care.

                                                              The Value of Tears
         Tears can ruin make-up, bring conversation to a stop, and give you a runny nose. Tears leave you
    embarrassed and without energy. Still, crying is a fact of life, and your tears are very useful. Even when
    you're not crying, they make a film over the eye's surface.   1   
         When tears fall, they reduce stress. But we tend to fight them for all sorts of reasons. "People worry
    about showing their emotions, afraid that once they lose control they'II never get it back. "     2    After
    we cry , the feelings that caused the tears often disappear.
        Sometirnes people become much stressed and can't cry. Whatever emotion  they  are  feeling-shock ,
    anger, fear , or sadness-is being held back.
          But everyone has the need to try. Psychologist Vera Diamond explains that her treatment often
    consists of giving people permission to cry.   3   Patients practice crying just to become used to expressing emotions. She suggests safe , private  places  to  cry , like  under the  bedcovers or in the car.
         Crying is a way of reducing tension, but people don't like it when others cry because it makes them
    tense.   4   And they'll do just about anything to make you stop.
         In certain situations, such as at work, tears are not appropriate. It's good not to cry during a tense
    business discussion.   5   You should also act out the whole situation again and be as noisy and angry as
    you Iike. It will help you feel better. "And,"  she adds, "once your tears have taken away the stress , you
    can begin to think calmly of ways to deal with the problem. "
