    　　At one time, computers were expected largely to remove the need for paper copies of documents(文件) because they could be stored electronically. But for all the leads that are written, stored and sent electronically, a lot of them are still ending up on paper.

    　　It is difficult to measure the quantity of paper used as a result of use of Internet-connected computers, although just about anyone who works in an office can tell you that when e-mail is introduced, the computers start working overtime. “I feel in my bones this revolution is causing more trees to be cut down. ”says Ted Smith of the Earth Village Organisation.

    　　Perhaps the best sign of how computer and Internet use pushes up demand for paper comes from the high-tech itself, which sees printing as one of its moat promising new markets. Several Internet companies have been set up to help small business print quality documents from a computer. Earlier this week Hewlett-Packard Co. announced a plan to develop new technologies that will enable people to paint even more so they can get a hard copy of a business document, a medical record or just a one-line email, even if they are nowhere rear a computer. As the company sees it, the more use of the Internet, the greater demand for printers.

    　　Does all this mean environmental concerns(环境问题) have been forgotten? Some activists suggest people have been led to believe that a lot of dangers to the environment have gone away. “I guess people believe that the problem is taken care of, because of recycling (回收利用).”said Kelly Quirke, director of the Rainforest Action Network in San Francisco. Yet Quirke is hopeful that high-tech may also prove helpful. He says printers that print on both aides are growing in popularity. The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other than wood, such as agricultural waste.

    　　I like to feed the birds on my balcony; I live in an apartment and can't have any pets as it is against the rules．I mainly get sparrows and a couple of pigeons(鸽子)．All bring joy to my heart．

    　　The other day, one pigeon got himself stuck in my balcony fence(护栏)．I thought he was dead．It made me san and then, when I went outside, he started to struggle, and my heart was filled with joy．

    　　As I approached the bird, he froze, perhaps in fear．I like to think that he could feel the sense of my not wanting to harm him．I gently placed my hand under him and lifted him up to set him free．He flew up to the roof of my flat and watched as I put the usual seeds out．Though still in pain, he came right back down to my balcony and ate his breakfast with the rest of the birds．

    　　It was amazing that my little feathered friend recovered from the situation．He didn't sit on the roof looking down at the evil balcony that had tried to trap him．Down he came to eat his breakfast and live the life he was meant to live．

    　　Another thing I have noticed is that while feeding, some birds tend to chase(追逐)the others away．The funny part is that they can't chase all of them away and that while they are so busy doing this, they are missing out on the food．

    　　How often do we behave like that in life?Instead of just getting on with the job, we watch and attack others．Then we find that while we have been busy trying to prove how good we are, all of a sudden a quiet achiever has managed to do the job and harvest the rewards we were so trying to get．

    Healthy knees aren't the main consideration in choosing high heels, but new research says chunky heels are just __________as spindly stilettos (细高跟鞋).  

    "It takes a long time to feel the effects of knee osteoarthritis (骨关节炎) — and once you do, it is too ]ate," said Dr. Casey Kerrigan, leading researcher of the study and associate professor at Harvard Medical School's department of physical medicine.

    "I compare it to smoking — one cigarette is not painful, but over a lifetime it is. Wide-heeled shoes feel comfortable, so women wear them all day long, "Kerrigan said. "They are better for your feet than stiletto heels, but just as had for your knees."

     The idea that high heels are bad for your health isn't new — scientists have warned women for years that they contribute to problems ranging from corns to hammer toes, tendonitis, knee pain, sprained (扭伤) ankles and back problems. 

    But in 1998,Kerdgan and a team of Harvard researchers were the first to link high heels and knee osteoarthritis, a painful joint disease that destroys cartilage (软骨) surrounding the knee.

     The first study looked only at stiletto heels, and Kerrigan said she wanted to study the chunky high-heeled shoes she noticed many women wearing.

     "This study confirms what we all intuitively (直觉地) know that high-heeled shoes of any kind are not good for our health," said Dr. Glenn Pfeifer, a San Francisco doctor and member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons who was not connected to the study.
