search for“寻找”;look at“ 看”;get through“完成,打通电话”;march into“(大步)走进”。
After 39 shouts of wildly wrong guesses可知此处指教授让学生猜有多少豆子。
小题6:选A。
此处的the woman就是指第一段中的a woman。
describe…as…“把…… 尊为”;see…as…“把……
小题10:选A。
an unknown world invisible to the eye指眼睛看不到的未知的世界。
小题13:选A。
小题15:选A。
小题20:选A。

Our minds have been changed by Our Green Year.We are grateful for the chance to have been able to go green and educate others. We believe that we do have the power to change things and help our planet.

“Get yourself up and make something of yourself, buddy!”Though my mother has passed away, her words are as clear in my head today as when I was a boy.
“Christ!”I said,“I have made something of myself. I want to sleep late as I like.”
“If there’s one thing I can’t stand,it’s a quitter.”Her voice in my head is more powerful than my will to refuse,so I pull myself from bed.
Before I was out of primary school, mother could see I lacked the gifts for either making millions or winning the love of crowds. So she began pushing me toward working with words.Words ran in her family. There seemed to be a word gene that passed down from her mother’s grandfather·
The greatest proof was my mother’s first cousin Edwin. He was the managing editor of the New York Times and had gained a name in his career.
In 1947 1 graduated from Johns Hopkins and applied for a job with the Baltimore Sun as a police reporter. It paid$30 a week .When I complained the wage was shameful for a learned man, mother refused to sympathize.“If you work hard at this job,”she said,“maybe you can make something of it.”
After a while,I was asked to cover diplomats(外交官)at various African embassies. Then,
seven years later I was arranged by the Sun to cover the White House,a task that was as close to heaven as a journalist could get. However, whatever achievement of mine only seemed insignificant in her eyes.Uncle Edwin’s success was really annoying during my early years as a reporter. What a thrill,I thought.
Then, out of my wildest childhood fantasy, the Times came knocking. It was sad that Uncle Edwin had passed away by this time.In 1979 I won the Pulitzer Prize.Unfortunately,my mother’s brain and health broke down the year before, leaving her in a nursing home, out of touch with life forevermore .She never knew of my Pulitzer.
I can probably guess how she’d have responded.“ That’s nice, buddy. It shows if you work hand,you’11 be able to make something of yourself one day,”

Louis Pasteur, the famous French chemist and bacteriologist(微生物学家), invented “pasteurization”. In 1854 Pasteur was made head of the department of science at the University of Lille, and it was there that he made one of his most famous discoveries. Lille was a major center for wine and beer-making, and some of the local wine-makers asked Pasteur if he could help solve the problem of keeping wine fresh. At that time, it was believed that food and drinks go “bad” due to a purely chemical process. But during a series of experiments Pasteur proved that tiny living organisms(微生物)caused food and drinks to go bad. In the case of wine and beer the organisms are already present in the form of the various yeasts (酵母) that caused the fermentation(发酵) process. Pasteur discovered that heating the wine gently for a few minutes after it had fermented would kill off the yeast that was left in the wine, with the result that the wine would remain fresh for much longer. He also proved that food and drinks could be turned bad by other organisms that were present in the air, and that they too would keep fresh much longer if they were kept in airtight containers.
The heating process was so successful that it made Pasteur famous. It was named “pasteurization” in his honour, and by about 1900 it had been widely used for processing and bottling cows’ milk. The result was a huge drop in the number of bottle-fed babies dying from infant diarrhea(婴儿腹泻)and from that time on it has been a standard treatment for milk and many other food products. This simple process has saved thousands, possibly millions, of lives worldwide.

The story I’m going to tell truly happened in my life.
The other day, I met a man outside the gym who       a movie star. He was handsome and smiling. His upper body was muscular(肌肉发达的)and he       to be on top of the world.
“How are you?” I       with a smile. “I’m doing really well,” he replied in a cheerful voice. His enthusiasm and big smile        the parking garage.        as he walked up, I       his long legs were thin and I saw he had a silver cane (手杖). “Why do you need that cane?” I couldn’t        thinking he had a minor injury. “I have MS,” he answered in a        voice too, as if his broad smile       left his face. Multiple Sclerosis(多发性硬化症)is a very serious disease and often painful. I looked at him from my little red sports car and said, “You        it very well. You seem like a happy man       the MS.” Without losing a bit of his smile he replied, “I am a happy man,” and then added, “I’d be even happier if I had that sports       .”
It was ironic (讽刺的). Just       we spoke, I’d been sitting in that little sports car, feeling sad about my painful shoulder over the last 11 months as I was       after an operation. Here’s a man with a       far tougher than mine, but his positive attitude made him feel no less happiness. He went on with his       of life as usual, which moved me deeply.
