         Runners in a relay(接力) race pass a stick in one direction. However, merchants passed silk, gold, fruit,
    and glass along the Silk Road in more than one direction. They earned their living by traveling the famous
    Silk Road.
         The Silk Road was not a simple trading network. It passed through thousands of citied and towns. It
    started from eastern China, across Central Asia and the Middle East, and ended in the Mediterranean Sea. It
    was used from about 200 B, C, to about A, D, 1300, when sea travel offered new routes (路线)　, It was
    sometimes called the world's longest highway. However, the Silk Road was made up of many routes, not
    one smooth path. They passed through what are now 18 countries. The routes crossed mountains and
    deserts and had many dangers of hot sun, deep snow and even battles. Only experienced traders could return
    safe.
         The Silk Road got its name from its most prized product. Silk could be used like money to pay taxes or
    buy goods. But the traders carried more than just silk. Gold, silver, and glass from Europe were much found
    in the Middle East and Asia. Horses traded from other areas changed farming practices in China. Indian
    merchants traded salt and other valuable goods. Chinese merchants traded paper, which produced an
    immediate effect on the West. Apples traveled from central Asia to Rome. The Chinese had learned to graft
    (嫁接)　different trees together to make new kinds of fruit. They passed this science on to others, including
    the Romans. The Romans used grafting to grow the apple. Trading along the Silk Road led to world-wide
    business 2,000 years before the World Wide Web.
         The people along the Silk Road did not share just goods. They also shared their beliefs. The Silk Road
    provided pathways for learning, diplomacy (外交), and religion (宗教)

         Almost everyone has read about the Taj Mahal in India. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. It is said that the Taj Mahal, like the Great Wall in China, is one of the seven wonders. in the world. Over three

         Shah Jehan wanted his wife' s tomb to be perfect. He did not care about time or money. He brought

         The building rests on a platform of red sandstone. Four thin white towers rise from the corners of the

         The building is made of fine white marbles. It has eight sides. There is an open corridor just inside the walls. From the corridor, the visitor looks through marble screen to a center room. The bodies of Shah Jehan and his wife lie in a tomb below this room.
         A beautiful garden surrounds the Taj Mahal. The green trees make the marble look even whiter. In front of
    the main entrance to the building there is a long narrow pool. If you look in this pool, you can see all the
    beautiful look of the Taj Mahal in the reflection from the water.
          Some people think the Taj Mahal is most beautiful at sunset. Then the marble picks up the color of sunset,
    and the building and its reflection in the pool shines like jewels. Others like it best at noon when the bright sun
    makes it clear and clean.
         Still others think it should be seen by moonlight. On nights when the moon is full, hundreds of people visit
    the Taj Mahal and spend the night beside the pool. When morning comes and the Taj Mahal tums from silver to
    gold in the early sunrise, they go away to retum, perhaps, when the moon is full again.

    what Oscar is to the movies. The name "Grammy" is short for "gramophone (machine for reproducing music

    show was held on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at the Staples Center. The big winners for 2005 were the late Ray
    Charles, U2, Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, Los Lonely Boys, Kanye West, Usher, John Mayer, Tim McGraw and
    Maroon.
         For 2007, the annum Grammy Awards was held at the Staples Center in downtown L.A. The organizers
    have decided to move the show back to Sunday again. In 2006, the show was held on Wednesday, Feb. 8.
    CBS had moved the show from its usual Sunday spot to avoid competing with coverage of the Winter
    Olympics.
         On Jan. 31, 2010, the Grammy Awards took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Jamie Foxx and

    slimming down some novels by such great writers as L. Tolstoy, M. Mitchell and C. Bronte.
    Now, each of them has been whittled down to about 400 pages by cutting 30 to 40 pages per
    cent of original, with words, sentences, paragraphs and, in a few cases, chapters removed. The
    first six shortened editions, all priced at ￡6.99 and advertised as great reads"in half the
    time", will go on sale next month, with plans for 50 to 100 more to follow. The publishing
    house believes that modern readers will welcome the shorter versions.

         I must say, the idea developed from a game of "shame" in my office. Each of us was
    required to confess (承认) to the most embarrassing blanks in his or her reading. I admitted
    that I had never read Anna Karenina and tried but failed to get through Gone with the Wind
    several times. One of my colleagues acknowledged skipping (跳读) Jane Eyre. We realized
    that life is too short to read all the books you want to and we never were going to read these
    ones.
         As a leading publishing house, we are trying to make classics convenient for readers but
    it's not as if we're withdrawing the original versions. They are still there if you want to read
    them.

         Mr. Edwards, I think your shortened edition is a breath of fresh air. I'm guilty of never
    having read Anna Karenina, because it's just so long. I'd much rather read two 300-page books
    than one 600-page book. I am looking forward to more shortened classics!

         In my opinion, the practice is completely ridiculous. How can you edit the classics? I'm
    afraid reading some of these books are hard work, and that is why you have to develop as a
    reader. If people don't have time to read Anna Karenina, then fine. But don't read a shortened
    version and kid yourself it's the real thing.

    in the United States believe that chocolate from Switzerland is better than chocolate from other countries, and
    they buy a lot of it.
    Customs and manners
         Customs are common social practices. Manners are ways of acting that the society believes are polite. For
    example, in the United States, it is the custom to have salad (色拉) before the main course at dinner, not after.
    It's not acceptable to talk with food in mouth at table. Failure to understand the customs and manners of other
    countries will bring difficulty selling their products. Orange juice as a breakfast drink of an American company
    in France doesn't sell well because the French don't usually drink juice with breakfast.
