Students often meet with questions as follows: bullied by someone, worried about a weak subject,
puzzled by family problems or concerned about pets at home. All the questions above may make you
not concentrated on your study. Who can you turn to if you are such an unlucky student? A great person
to share your thoughts and feelings with is your school counsellor(顾问).
Add school counsellors to the list of people you can turn to when you need help. They know how to
listen and can help kids with life's challenges(挑战). Counsellors have special training in how to help
kids solve problems, make decisions, and stand up for themselves. That doesn't mean your counsellor
will wave a magic wand and the problem will go away. But it does mean he or she will help you cope
with(应付) it. Coping is an important word to know. Sometimes, kids and grown-ups have difficult
problems. Coping means that someone is trying to handle these problems and make things better.
Your school counsellor is available for you and wants to make your school experience the best it can
be. The counsellor's job is to take your problem seriously and help you find a solution. The counsellor
also wants to help you learn as much as you can in class, be a contributing member of the school
community, and be a positive influence on your environment.

Sailors used to speak of a “Jack”when they meant a flag which was set near the bow of a sailing ship. The flag showed the country to which the ship belonged. The Union Jack became the flag of Great Britain. Australia's flag has the Union Jack in the top left hand corner together with the stars of the Southern Cross. They have kept this small part of Britain on their flag because their country was first settled by people from Britain.

Australia's flag is the same color as the Union Jack--red, white and blue. The act of joining together is called a“ Union”. The Union Jack was the name of the flag made when England, Scotland and Ireland joined together to make one country.

It all began in 1707 when England and Scotland joined together to become one nation. A flag was made using two crosses--one for the patron saint of each country. The word “patron” means protector. Many centuries before the English had taken St George as their patron saint, his emblem (标志 ) was a red cross on a white background. The Scottish patron saint was St Andrew. In memory of him, they used a white cross on a blue background. This cross was shaped like the letter “X”. The new flag was a mixture of both flags with two sets of crosses. When Ireland joined England and Scotland in 1800,another cross was added. St Patrich's cross of Ireland was red and also shaped like an “X”. All three flags now made up the Union Jack.

    [ ]

(3)Why does Australia have the Union Jack in its flag?

    [ ]

    A. Because Australians respect the English.

    B. Because the Union Jack is colorful.

    C. Because people from Britain settled in Australia first.

    D. Because people from Britain brought the Union Jack to Australia.

(4)Which of the following is not true?

    [ ]

    A. The emblem (象征) of the English was a red cross on a white background.

    B. The Scottish used a white cross on a blue background in memory of St Andrew.

    C. Australia's flag is the same color as the Union Jack.

    D. The Irish used a red cross on a blue background in memory of St George.

February has long been a month of romance. With the sweet smell of roses in the
air, romantic films hit cinemas and love stories fill newspapers and magazines.
On the 14th day, it is a custom for a boy to take his girlfriend out to dinner, buy her

This is what you see on Valentine’s Day, a day named after Valentine who was a priest in the third century Rome. 请认真阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项.
In the debates about how a particular piece of land is to be used, the priorities often conflict. What should you do, for example, if you find out that under the fertile fields of a farming community there is a thick bed of coal which can be strip mined(露天矿) ? Strip mining tears up top soil and plants. But mining may create jobs, bring money to the towns businesses. Those who approve of strip mining say that the coal is needed, and they point out that it is quicker and cheaper to get coal from the surface than to go deep into the earth to get it by standard mining techniques. On the other hand, it takes nature 500 years to create an inch of top soil. As the countryside fills up, people are becoming more aware of the need for open space. Nearly every proposal for a new power plant, highway, or airport draws fierce opposition. Everyone wants the big, land-eating “uglies” to be in someone else’s backyard. Minneapolis and St.Paul, Minnesota, for example, have been debating about the site of a future airport for years. Yet if a new airport is needed, it will have to go somewhere.
How do we find our way out of the land-used problem? One way might be to reexamine our values, to think in new directions. Does everyone have to have a car with its need for highways and parking lots? What about developing mass transport systems that use less land? Do suburbs have to spread? Can they be designed so they use less space? Do we have to have more energy? If we do, do we really have to strip-mine coal to provide it?
However difficult they may be to arrive at, choices will have to be made if we want to preserve the beauty and usefulness of the land. For there is at least one point on which all of us can agree: The land does have its limits.
    1. The word “priorities” in the sentence means ____.
? A. the various needs           B. the most important goal
? C. the number one necessity     D. the first thing to be considered
    2. “…, people are becoming more aware of the need for open space. ” tells us that ____.
? A. people are thinking to develop their living space into the sky
? B. people noticed the need for unoccupied land
? C. people are struggling to get more land from the space ?
    D. people are becoming more active on the space issue
    3. How do we find our way out of the land use problems?
?A. One way might be to reexamine our values, to think in new directions.
    B. Everyone has to have a car with its need for highways and parking lots.
?C. We have to have more energy. We need strip-mine coal to provide it.
    D. We may develop mass transit systems which use less land.
    4. “Everyone wants the big, land-eating ‘uglies’ to be in someone else s backyard.” shows that        .
? A. people don t want more big projects
? B. people don t want to live in the neighborhood of the big projects
? C. people regard the large construction projects are “uglies ”
? D. people don t like the undesirable building projects
    5. The main idea of this article is ____.
?  A. The Limits of Land            B. Land
    C. Land and Our Life Styles      D. Land and Space

A teenage girl is fighting for her life today after being struck by lightning as severe thunderstorms swept across Britain. The girl was one of four teenage girls from London who were hit by lightning in the Parade Ground area of Hyde Park during a storm. Earlier, Joseph Wharton, 14, died as he was struck by lightning while camping in his friend’s backyard in the West Midlands.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said the girl remained in serious condition at St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington. She had stopped breathing by the time the first paramedic (护理人员) arrived on the scene just two minutes after the strike at 5:40 p.m. yesterday.

The other three girls hit by the bolt all had injuries, and were taken to University College Hospital. Their conditions were not serious, the spokesman added.

The strike lifted the girls into the air and then dropped them to the ground, a witness reported.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said paramedics risked their lives to treat the girls. “The storm was still overhead and lightning was still coming down while they were treating the patients,” he said. “All staff involved acted very professionally in providing fast treatment to these patients in very difficult circumstances.” Scotland Yard said the incident was being looked into by officers from the Royal Parks’ Operational Command Unit.
