---What do you think of the two students ______ to take part in the competition?

---They are hardworking as well as intelligent.

A. selecting B. to select

C. selected D. having selected

C

We will go fishing if it doesn’t rain tomorrow.       She did some shopping last Sunday.   6.

BEIJING, Feb. 26 (China Daily) -- As the smog orange warning continues, tourist attractions in Beijing are experiencing a significant decline (下降) in visitor number.

A new report launched by Beijing authorities on the morning of February 24 indicates that the concentration of PM 2.5 has risen, with no sign of decreasing, the orange warning will still be in effect, according to Xinhua News Agency.

According to data released by the Beijing Tourism Website, by 2:00 pm, February 24, popular tourist attractions including The Great Wall and Palace Museum had been affected by the smog in terms of tourist numbers.

As for the Palace Museum, the number of visitors was only 11,200 that day, far from the figure of 40,000, which is the daily average number of visitors it normally receives.

There were a few visitors in Beihai Park on the morning of February 24, and two visitors from Hebei province planned to end their morning tour earlier than scheduled because of the smog. One of them said, “The visibility is so poor that we can’t take good photos, or even see clearly. We’d better leave early.”

In response to worsening air conditions, travel agencies have also taken some measures to avoid a further decline in tourist numbers. An employee with China Youth Travel Service, Wang Tao, said the agency will inform tourists of the weather conditions at their destinations. A tour guide with China Travel Service also told the media that it was a tour guide’s duty to inform foreign visitors of the smog conditions in Beijing, and the agency will provide free face masks to those in need. But efforts to do so merely treat the symptom rather than the disease itself, because the root cause is air pollution. China will introduce various emergency responses and long-term measures against air pollution. Officials and experts called for combined efforts by governments, industries and the public to cooperate more efficiently and to jointly solve the problem.

D. According to the data released by the Beijing Tourism Website, we can know the information.

2.According to the passage, if the weather is fine, how many visitors will the Palace Museum receive in a week?

A. About 11,200. B. About 78,400.

C. About 40,000. D. About 280,000.

3.The most effective way to solve the problem of air pollution is to _______.

A. take some measures of treating the symptom merely

B. unite the power of governments, industries and the public

C. provide free face masks to those in need

D. inform tourists of the weather conditions at their destinations

4.What does the author most probably mean by saying “efforts to do so merely treat the

symptom rather than the disease itself” in the last paragraph?

A. These efforts could treat the symptom and the disease.

B. Treating the symptom is more important than the disease.

C. These efforts are not enough to solve the problem thoroughly.

D. These efforts couldn’t treat the disease, so they are unnecessary.

A month went by in this manner, but a month was all I could bear.

The memory of Marguerite accompanied me wherever I went. I had loved that woman — still loved her — too much for her suddenly to mean nothing to me. Whatever feelings I might have for her now, I had to see her again. At once.

I knew Marguerite. Meeting me so unexpectedly must have thrown her into a state of great confusion. Probably, she had heard of my departure which had set her mind at rest as to the consequences of our sudden parting. But, seeing me back and coming face to face with me, weak as I was, she had sensed that my return had a purpose, and must have wondered what was going to happen.

If, when I saw her again, Marguerite had been unhappy; if, in taking my revenge (复仇), there had also been some way of helping her then I might well have forgiven her, and would certainly never have dreamed of doing her any harm. But when I saw her again, she was happy, at least on the surface. Another man had ensured her the wealthy life in which I had been unable to keep her. She brought shame both to my pride and my love; she was going to have to pay for what I had suffered.

I could not remain cold to what she did now. It followed that the thing that would hurt her most would be exactly for me to show coldness. Coldness, therefore, was the feeling which I now needed to pretend, not only in her presence but in the eyes of others.

I tried to put a smile on my face, and I went to call on Prudence with whom Marguerite was

staying.

Prudence saw me to the door, and I returned to my apartment with tears of anger in my eyes and thirst for revenge in my heart and thought only of finding a way to make the poor creature suffer.

1. This passage is most probably ______ of a love story.

A. the beginning B. a chapter

C. a summary D. the introduction

2.According to the passage, the hero wanted to ______.

A. give Marguerite sufferings because his pride and his love were hurt

B. stop the relationship with Marguerite because he couldn’t afford a rich life

C. make up the relationship with Marguerite because he still loved her

D. forgive Marguerite because he found her unhappy

3.What kind of feelings did the hero most probably have?

A. Coldness and love. B. Coldness and hate.

C. Love and hate. D. Hate and sadness.

4. What would the author most probably write about next?

A. Why he changed his mind suddenly.

B. How he made Marguerite suffer.

C. How he made up his relationship with Marguerite.

D. Why he wanted Marguerite to pay for what he had suffered.

Cambridge graduates are the most employable in the world, according to a global league table. The ancient university is the best at producing graduates who are‘ready to work’,a poll of major employers found.

Oxford slipped to fourth place in the rankings having taken top spot last year.Harvard and Yale—part of the US‘Ivy League’of universities—were second and third respectively.

Five British universities were ranked in the top 20—one more than last year—and 12 were in the full list of 150.

But the UK as a country came third—behind the US and Germany—when companies were asked to name the best nation for producing work—ready graduates.

The table—the Global Employability(就业能力)University Ranking published by the International New York Times—also showed that universities in Asian countries were rapidly gaining ground on their western counterparts (对手).

Asian universities claimed 20 percent of the top 150 places in 2014 compared with only 10 percent when the tables were first published in 2010.

The other British universities in the top 20 were University College London,in 14th place,Imperial College London,in 15th,and Edinburgh,18th.

The table showed the gap between a small number of top UK universities and less famous institutions.

Laurent Dupasquier, managing partner at Emerging,a French human resources consultancy, said:“The top tier players.global brands (which tend to be all American and British).continue to lead, while other Anglo—Saxon universities, those that are mainly regional players, tend to develop less well, with an average of five places lost in comparison with last year.”

“Like the Premier League(英超联赛),the champions have an international community of students and think internationally, unlike their more locally oriented counterparts.”

The table was made following a survey of 2,500 major companies in 20 countries.Employers were asked to rank universities against a range of criteria including their production of graduates who are ready to work and their links with business.

The study claimed that‘the days of ivory towers are over’.
