    　　MADRIDWhat is it that makes people happy? Youth , health , a good job , good looks , a flashy car? None of these things, Spanish experts say.

    　　The concept of happiness is coming under increasingly close examination in Spain.

    　　As the nation rises to the club of the world's wealthiest countries , people are discovering that material things do not bring happiness.

    　　“Most people use money as a measure of human value ,” says Jesus Ynfante , author of a book on Spain's 300 biggest fortunes.

    　　“Expensive products are regarded as the best. The rich are admired simply for being rich,” Ynfante said.

    　　Yet psychologists warn that happiness cannot be bought. They advise people to look for it in human relations and in the small pleasures of everyday life.

    　　Many people regard happiness as a moment of ecstatic pleasure （狂喜）something that, by definition , cannot lastwhile others speak of it as peace and acceptance of oneself. Polls （问卷调查） in different countries indicate that between 65 and 85 per cent of the world's population regard themselves as reasonably happy.

    　　Around 40 per cent of a person's happiness is though to be determined by genetics , while the rest depends on childhood environment and the process of growing up.

    　　Perhaps the most surprising thing about happiness is that it has little to do with age , health , wealth, or other values though to be important in Western society.

    　　For most Spaniards , happiness is linked with feeling close to other people.

    　　Happy people accept their limitations and set themselves reachable goals , experts say.

    　　There are lifestyle choices which favour happiness , such as exercise , eating carbohydrates and exposing oneself to sunlight.

    　　But the main secret of happiness is to take pleasure in small things.

    　　“If you are given a choice between eternal （永久的） happiness and a cheese sandwich , take the sandwich ,” advises musician Julian Hernandez.

    　　Even at the age of 89 Rene Huyghe still loves the woman with whom he spent World WarⅡ driving her from her house to safety, hiding her in his office, even sharing a bedroom with her. She was “Mona Lisa”, masterpiece of Leonardo da Vinci and a centerpiece of the Louvre. He was the chief curator（管理员）of paintings there.

    　　Foreseeing the Nazi drive across Europe, Huyghe began planning in 1938 to hide his charges. When Germans entered Poland a year later, Huyghe’s trucks took Louvre paintings to hiding places far from Paris. “Mona Lisa” rode in a car, “always going with a curator, sometimes with me,” he recalls.

    　　She was carried from place to place out of fear. Bombs could strike her hiding place; fire could burn her; she could end up in a German collection.

    　　Once, as Nazi troops passed her last hiding place, Chateau de Montal, a Resistance fighter inside fired at them. Fearing retaliation（报复）, Huyghe shouted to the man, “You are mad! Stop it at once!” The troops moved on and the following day razed（洗劫） entire village nearby.

    　　“At war’s end every single work was back in the Louvre,” Huyghe says. “Mona Lisa” herself returned in a curator’s private car.

    　　Remembering names is an important social skill．Here are some ways to master it．

    　　Recite and repeat in conversation．

    　　When you hear a person’s name, repeat it．Immediately say it to yourself several times without moving your lips．You could also repeat the name in a way that does not sound forced or artificial．

    　　Ask the other person to recite and repeat．

    　　You can let other people help you remember their names．After you’ve been introduced to someone, ask that person to spell the name mad pronounce it correctly for you．Most people will be pleased by the effort you’re making to learn their names．

    　　Link each person yon meet with one thing you find interesting or unusual．For example, you could make a mental note：“Vicki Cheng-tall, black hair．”To reinforce you’re your associations, write them on a small card as soon as possible．

    　　When meeting a group of people, concentrate on remembering just two or three names．Free yourself from remembering every one．Few of the people in mass introductions expect you to remember their names．Another way is to limit yourself to learning just first names．Last names can come later．

    　　It may be one of Britain’s most successful exports – Miss World．This 53-year-old event took place in China last week and attracted over 120 women worldwide with knockout looks in a mad struggle for the crown．

    　　Think about who is always standing beside a fancy car on show? Is it a boy or a girl? And this is how “qualities” are judged：if the girl looks good, there is little reason why the car beside her is not of high quality．

    　　The beauty contests go on year after year, with winners enjoying fame which quickly disappears．While such events go on and on, what never changes is the routine practice that in every fancy car show, a girl stands beside a fancy car．What never changes is the need to hold a women’s conference every year to appeal for the promotion of respect for and improvement of women．What never changes is the fate of women as a class．So let’s put more time and resources into trying to change all this rather than holding beauty contests．
