    During last year's Singles'Day，tmall．com，together with taobao．com，reached a record of 19.1 billion yuan in sales volume，which considered a hallmark（品质证明） in the e-commerce history of China．
    Singles'Day was first started by Chinese college students in the 1990s as the opposite of Valentine's Day，a celebration for people without romantic partners．The timing was based on the date：Nov.11-or double 11-for singles．Unattached young people would treat each other to dinner or give gifts to woo that special someone and end their single status．
    But now，the Singles'Day has been promoted as a kind of grand craze just for the shopping season kicks-off，thanks to thousands of discounted products being promoted online．
    Taobao．com was the first big e-retail platform which used the double 11 idea to promote sales．Taobao．com reached one million yuan worth of sales volume on that day in 2009，when they first promoted the Singles'Day idea．In 2010，that volume increased to 936 million yuan．The figure climbed up to 5.3 billion yuan in 2011，putting huge demand on shipping services．The figure doubled in 2012．
    E-commerce is considered to be elbowing out the traditional retailing industry，but the reality is both sides are learning from each other．

    14．Wildlife conservationists in Kenya are trying to save a rare kind of rhinoceros （犀牛）．So many northern white rhinos have been hunted and killed that they are almost dying out．There were only five northern white rhinos left．So the workers hoped they could save the rhinos by helping them produce young．
    Three northern white rhinos lived at The Ol Pejeta Conservancy （保护区） in Kenya．Workers with military weapons guarded the rhinos as they walked，played and ate over a large area of natural grass and trees．The three rhinos were brought to the conservancy in 2009from a zoo in the Czech Republic．Workers hoped they would have a better chance of survival in a more natural habitat．
    But breeding has not been as successful as they had hoped．And the number of northern white rhinos continues to decrease．One of the rhinos at the conservancy died in October．Another died at a zoo in the US city of San Diego，California earlier this month．The San Diego zoo still has one northern white rhino left．The zoo in the Czech Republic also has one．
    The last wild northern white rhinos were hunted and killed during conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo over the past ten years．Rhinos are killed because many people in Asia want the animals'horns （角）．They believe the horns will help with medical problems．But researchers say there is no medicine in the horn，just a kind of hair．
    The last male northern white rhino is 41years old．He has been unsuccessful in producing young with a female rhino．So conservationists will use artificial methods to make a young female become pregnant．If that is not successful，they will try to fertilize a northern rhino egg and put it into a southern white rhino，who will act as a surrogate（代孕） mother．The last solution would be cross-breeding between the northern and southern white rhino species．If cross-breeding is successful，there is hope that some part of the northern white rhino species may still live on．
