Having lived in the house for so long, we found our kitchen looked old. We decided it was time to 1 the kitchen, and my husband and I were discussing 2 colors. The children, sitting nearby, suddenly all spoke together: “Not the measuring stick.”
“No,” I 3 them. “Not the measuring stick..”
The measuring stick isn’t a (an) 4 stick but the kitchen side of the door between our kitchen and dining room. Along the edge we’ve 5 each child’s growth by making a mark showing his or her 6 on every birthday. Over the years so many colored pens, pencils and markers have been used, that now, this white door is somewhat like an abstract painting.
Names and dates show different 7 , and I can tell by the script(手迹) who measured whom. An eight-year-old measured her three-year-old sister, a grandchild measured her grandmother, my husband measured me. At the parties, when this door 8 back and forth frequently, friends stop to 9 the names and dates. When we ask if they would like to be always remembered, they usually smile 10 and go back right up into place, 11 to be measured.
Many of those listed on the door are still 12 ; some have stopped. Some remain with us only in 13 . When my mother came to see my eldest daughter graduate from university, we measured her too. It was her last visit to our home.
We haven’t 14 the new kitchen color plan yet, but one thing is certain: whatever color we choose, the back of the kitchen door will always remain 15 , with lots of names and dates in various colors.

As a foreigner , I often hear the Chinese calling me laowai ” . If I could not speak Chinese or if I had no understanding of Asian customs , I might be angry when I am called a “ laowai ” . But having lived in the Philippines and China’s Taiwan Province teaching English for several years , I have come to China with a different view from most other foreign teachers here . In such situations , I just answer back in standard Chinese : “ Ni zenmo zhidao wo shi waiguoren ?( How do you know I’m a foreigner ? )” When I hear people shout out “ hello ” in a more impolite way and then laugh , I reply in Chinese with “ Ni de yingyu bi wo de hao .(Your English is better than mine .)”
Speaking Chinese is a way of living an easier life in China . As an English teacher at Hubei University in Wuhan , I was once invited by a student to spend the weekend with his family . Because I can speak Chinese quite freely , I was able to talk with my student’s entire family . From my personal experience , I knew that the Chinese have a “ gift ”for making foreigners in China feel right at home . That fun-filled weekend I spent with my student’s family in Caidian , a small suburb of Wuhan , just showed that my idea was right .
It was an experience I will never forget .
Americans have a saying : If you can’t beat them , then join them .The secret to feeling at home with the Chinese people isn’t to try to make them change over to Western ways . The secret is to become one of them . Just go with the flow , or don’t take things too seriously . In this way you will surely feel at home in China .
If you no longer emphasize (强调) our differences from the Chinese , you will be more willing to concentrate on what “ big noses ” and “ small noses ” have in common .

Have you dreamed of traveling to cool places, meeting
different people, and maybe picking up a language or two? No matter which
country you live in, you can fly over the world’s highest waterfalls in
Venezuela, study in France or take dancing lessons in Ghana. Besides the
excitement of traveling, there is another reason to study abroad.
"Obviously, I learned the language and am now fluent, but perhaps what’s
more important was how much I learned about cultures, people, and myself."
said Andrew, who studied in France.
Christina studied in Caracas, Venezuela, a city of 10
million people and a huge change from her hometown of 35,000! Christina said
she learned how to better speak for herself and her beliefs and to express
herself in another language. What could make you more confident than that?
Living away from home can also help you become adapted
to the transition (
过渡) to college and adulthood. Matthew said that he returned from
studying in Australia with confidence, and a real interest in international
affairs. "After having gone abroad in high school, I found the
transition to college was a breeze — moving 560 miles from home didn’t seem
difficult at all after having lived thousands of miles away. "
Speaking of college, improving your language skills
might help you get into ideal colleges and even land future jobs. Colleges and
employers know that studying abroad provides leadership skills in a world that
needs much communication. Most of all, it’s fun! You won’t suffer from the
general boredom (
单调) while you’re studying in a different learning environment.
