When it is Tom’s turn for a cut, Mr. Smith places a wooden board covered with a piece of red leather across the arms of the chair, so that the barber doesn’t have to bend to cut the boy’s hair.
“Hey, young man, you’re       , you won’t need this soon, you’ll be able to sit in the chair.” the barber says.
“Wow,” says Tom, turning round to look at his dad. “Dad, Mr. Smith said I could be sitting in the chair soon, not just on the      !”
“So I hear,” his father replies. “I expect Mr. Smith will start       me more for your hair then.”
In the       Tom sees a little head sticking out of a long nylon cape. Occasionally he       glances at the barber as he works. He smells a(n)       of smelly sweat and aftershave as the barber moves around him, combing and cutting.
Tom feels like he is in another world,       except for the sound of the barber’s shoes rubbing on the plastic carpet and the       of his scissors. In the       from the window he could see through the window, a few small clouds moved slowly through the frame, moving to the       of the scissors’ click.
Sleepily, his eyes dropping to the front of the cape where his hair       softly as snow and he      sitting in the chair just like the men and older boys, the special       left leaning against the wall in the corner.
When Mr. Smith has      , Tom hops down from the seat.      , he sees his own thick,       hair mixed among the browns, greys and blacks of the men who have sat in the chair before him. For a moment he wants to reach down and       the broken blonde hair, to       them from the others, but he does not have time.
They reach the pavement outside the shop. “I tell you what, boy, let’s get some fish and chips to take home,       your mum from cooking tea,” says Tom’s dad.
Tom is excited and catches his dad’s hand. He is surprised to find, warming in his father’s palm, a handful of his own       .

【小题1】D build up树立,逐步建立,增强,增进;send up发送;bring up抚养,抚育;shoot up迅速成长。
【小题2】B原词重现。上文“Mr. Smith places a wooden board”已经提示答案。desk桌子;board木板;
【小题7】B    根据下文“except for the sound of the barber’s shoes rubbing on the plastic carpet and the   38  of his scissors.
下文“moving to the       of the scissors’ click.”
【小题9】C 根据下文“he could see through the window”说明是通过“窗户折射(到镜子中)”而看到的。
【小题12】D根据下文“sitting in the chair just like the men and older boys”说明“他在想象(imagines)”。
【小题14】C根据下文“Tom hops down from the seat.”
look into调查;look forward盼望;look up往上看,查找。
从下文讲“For a moment he wants to reach down and       the broken blonde hair,”可以得出答案。
【小题17】C从下文“to       them from the others”我们可以推断“他是想把他自己被剪下的头发聚集起来(gather up)”。 send for派人去请;find out(经调查了解后)发现;show off炫耀。
separate... from把……
【小题19】B根据上文“let’s get some fish and chips to take home”可以推断“你妈妈就省得(save)做饭了”.

How often do you let other people’s nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, impolite waiter, rude boss, or an insensitive employee       your day?
Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson in the back of a New York City taxi cab. One day I was in a taxi and we headed        the airport. We were driving in the       lane when suddenly a black car drove out of a parking space right in front of us.  My taxi driver slammed on his      , slide sideways, and at the very last moment our car stopped and       the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car , the guy who almost caused a big accident, looked around and started       at us.
My taxi driver just       and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was        ,so I said,"Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!” This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call "The Law of the Garbage Truck".
He said, “ Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of      , full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage        up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on       .  Don’t take it personally; Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Believe me. You’ll be       .”
So I started thinking, how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and        it to other people at work, at home, or on the street? It was then that I said, “I don’t want their garbage and I’m not going to spread it anymore.”
Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with      . The mark of your success is how quickly you can refocus on what’s       in your life. See, Roy Baumeister, a psychology researcher from Florida State University, found in his extensive research that you __     bad things more often than good things in your life. You store the bad memories more easily, and you __    them more frequently. So love the people who treat you right. Ignore the ones who don’t. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you _    it!The odds are against you when a Garbage Truck comes your way, but when you follow “The Law of the Garbage Truck”,you take back control of your life. You make room for the good by      go of the bad.
Have a Garbage-Free Day!Have a marvelous, garbage-free day!The seeds you plant today       the harvest you reap tomorrow.

Fifteen years spent in the field of education has provided me with many treasured moments. One of the most unforgettable       when I was teaching second        , 10 years ago.
In May I decided to plan something special for the children: a Mother’s Day tea. We had put our heads together to       ideas of how to       our mothers. We practiced singing songs, memorized poems and wrote cards. We decided to hold our tea the Friday before Mother’s Day.  I was surprised and      to learn that every mother was planning to attend. I     invited my own mother.
Finally, the big day arrived. Each child      up at our classroom door, expecting the arrival of his or her mom.     it got closer to starting time, I looked around and my eyes quickly found Jimmy. His mother hadn’t shown up and he was looking       .
I took my mother by the hand and walked over to Jimmy. “Jimmy,” I said, “I have a bit of problem here and I was     if you could keep my mother       while I’m busy.”
My mom and Jimmy sat at a table. Jimmy      my mom her treats, presented her with the gift I had made, just as we had       the day before. Whenever I looked over, my mother and Jimmy were in deep       .
Now 10 years later, I work with students of all ages, educating them about the environment. Last year, I took a senior class on a field trip, and there was Jimmy. I had the students complete an outline of the day’s     and an evaluation of our trip. Then I collected the students’ booklets and checked them to see if      was completed. When I came       Jimmy’s page, he had written “Remember our Mother’s Day tea we had in second grade, Mrs. Marra? I do! Thanks for all you did for me, and thank your mother, too.”
I told him I really enjoyed what he had written. He looked rather embarrassed and    his own thanks and walked away. Suddenly he ran back and gave me a big hug. “Thanks again. No one even knew my mother didn’t      it.”
I ended my workday with a hug from a teenage boy who had      stopped hugging teachers years ago.

It was 20 years ago. I was driving home with my 4-year-old son. Traffic was light. I was singing quietly along       the song playing on the radio. I    at the intersection(交叉路口) and looked both ways. The road was      . I slowly started to make a right turn when suddenly a car rounded the curve at high speed and came      at me. I stomped (猛踩) on the brakes of my car killing the engine in the process. The speeder zoomed (疾驰) past my dead car     me by inches without even slowing down.
I knew it, a stream of rude words was flying from my lips,      after the car and its driver. I then saw my son who was staring up at me     . With a red face and a(an)      smile I started the car, pulled back onto the road, and headed home.
Later that evening I was reading a book when I heard certain     words coming from my son’s bedroom. He was replaying the       over and over in his mind. Too          I realized the       of those words that had flown from my lips in that moment of    . It took a lot of talks about good language and bad language with my son to undo (消除)the      of that incident.
That     , however, did teach me just how strong words      be. It helped me to decide to stop swearing (咒骂) in my own life and to start using words uplifting and inspire instead. I slowly realized that language is a      from God and should be used to make our world better but not worse. I learned      that a few loving words can help a hurting heart, strengthen a       spirit, and lighten a heavy load. I pray then that all of your words today are full of love, joy, happiness, and light.
