When the cancer returned last, they, once again可知此处是指两年前的第一次诊断。

此处应和and后面的 chemotherapy(化疗)一词构成并列关系,故选D(手术)。

从上文They waited for hours,可推断父母是拿着可以打发时间的东西,结合下文Mom with a magazine,故填Bible(圣经),其它几项均不合句意。

故选A

从上文a magazine I liked best及下文I couldn't tell you the last time when I'd read an issue(我记不得最后一次读期刊是什么时候)可得知作者已经订阅此杂志很多年了。

故选B. pick up拿起,捡起;而A举起;张贴,为...

从下文中signature(署名)可推断出是与“看”有关。
