The unemployed husband did concentrate on writing that year, and the novel he wrote became a literary masterpiece．The book is The Scarlet Letter．Sophia had an even greater achievement, and she turned Nathaniel Hawthorne from a poor clerk into a world famous master．

    Teaching kids to fish sometimes puzzles us parents. Now I’d like to give you a few tips.
    First of all, start them young.

    Make sure he makes and sees the connection from catching to cleaning to cooking. As soon as you have the fish cleaned, it’s into the kitchen to start cooking. Make him flour and cornmeal the fish. Let him see the fish cooking, and talk about how good they are. Then when it’s ready, make sure you brag（吹嘘） on the fact that he (or she ) caught these fish, and “aren’t they good?”

    When Joe Bates was twelve years old, he lost interest in school. He stopped listening in his classes. Some of his teachers began to consider him a problem.
    But a few of Joe’s teachers thought that Joe might have lost interest in schoolwork because he already understood it. They proposed that Joe try taking a university class in computer science. Joe did. He was the best student in the class. Later tests showed that his intelligence and knowledge were far greater than most children of his age. He entered university when he was thirteen, about four years earlier than most children. And by the time he was in his early twenties, Joe was teaching computer science at a university.
    Joe’s story shows what can happen when a child’s unusual ability is recognized. Sadly, however, not all gifted children get this recognition. And educational experts say unusually gifted children may waste their abilities if they do not get help to develop them.
    Studies show that almost twenty percent of students who fail to complete high school in the United States are gifted children.This is because gifted children can have special problems as well as special abilities. Teachers may not recognize their abilities or may not know how to keep them interested. Or they may consider such students to be troublemakers or rebels.
    Gifted children may feel lonely or different because they do not know other children who share their interests.
    Educators say there are more than two million gifted children in the United States today.  But they say fewer than half are taking part in special education programs designed for them.
    One of the most successful programs is held every summer at John Hopkins University in the state of Maryland, where Joe Bates went to school. It started in 1980 when educators saw that there must be many children like Joe.
    At first, only 100 children took part in it, and now more than 1,000 children between the ages of nine and sixteen are students in the summer program.
    The John Hopkins program provides studies in math and science. It also has classes for children with unusual ability in language and writing. The children study the same subject every day for several weeks. It could be biology, or history, or literature. In those few weeks, they learn as much as in a normal nine-month school year.
    William Durden, the director says the program succeeds because it permits children to make progress more quickly than in a traditional program. And the children get to meet others like themselves.

    Hoorah！I have escaped the Czech (捷克) Republic! I am now wearing light clothing and sunglasses, although the latter are superfluous today, as it is cool and overcast with cloud and it has rained slightly.
    The city of Qatar (卡塔尔) is flat and sandy with few trees — mostly palms. You can see construction everywhere, new streets with hotels and apartment blocks in Venice theme. You can easily find imported labour from South Asian countries, poorly paid and discriminated against. I am told that Qataris don’t hide their racist attitudes.
    Women are always wonderful sights. Some are in all sorts of black clothing with face uncovered; some totally enveloped; lots wearing western dresses. Best sight so far: a woman in a mall completely wrapped in black including gloves, not even an eye shown — wearing glasses on the outside of her veil (面纱), using a cell phone while fingering a dress.
    I am living with my employers — a New Zealand couple, and another teacher named Wayne, all about my age. We share one apartment. The only rather annoying thing is that I have to use the laptop on my bed as there is no desk and chair in here. As soon as it is clear that I will be staying I will make a change to all this.     Besides relevant theories and keen logic, a scientist who does research in economic psychology and who wants to predict the way in which consumers will spend their money must study consumer behavior.  It’s vital for his credit as a qualified economist.   He must obtain numbers and material both on the resources of consumers and on the efforts that tend to encourage or discourage money spending.
    If an economist were asked which of the three groups borrow most——people with rising incomes, stable incomes or declining incomes——he would probably answer: those with declining incomes.  Actually, in the past 5 years, the answer was: people with rising incomes.  This shows us that traditional assumptions about earning and spending are not always reliable.  Another traditional assumption is that if people who have money expect prices to go up, they will hurry to buy.  If they expect prices to go down, they will postpone buying.  But research surveys have shown that this is also not always the case.  Their expectations of price increases may not stimulate buying.  One typical attitude was expressed by the wife of a mechanic in an interview at a time of rising prices.  “In a few months,” she said, “we’ll have to pay more for meat and milk.  We’ll have less to spend on other things.”  Her family had been planning to buy a new car but they postponed this purchase.  Furthermore, the rise in prices that has already taken place may be hated and buyer’s resistance may be caused.  This is shown by the following typical comment of the wife: “I just don’t pay these prices: they are too high.”
    Traditional assumptions should be investigated carefully, and factors of time and place should be considered.  The investigations mentioned above were carried out in America.  Research conducted at the same time in Great Britain, however, produced results that were more in agreement with traditional assumptions about saving and spending patterns.  The condition most beneficial to spending appears to be price stability.  If prices have been stable and people have become accustomed to considering the current prices “right”, they are likely to buy.  Thus, in a society of good economy which maintains consumer confidence, it appears that the common business policy of maintaining stable prices with occasional sales or discounts is based on a correct understanding of consumer psychology.

    The world is not only hungry, but it is also thirsty for water．This may seem strange to you，since nearly 70 percent of the earth's surface is covered with water．But about 97 percent of this huge amount is sea water, or salt water．Man can only drink and use the other 3 percent-the fresh water from rivers，lakes，underground，and other sources．And we cannot even use all of that，because some of it is in the form of icebergs and glacier．Even worse，some of it has been polluted．
