    5．The Children's Book-show Competition is a chance for young readers to be writers．
    Reading it seems，is coming back in fashion，if a survey by the famous National Literacy Trust （the NLT） is true．It shows that the percentage of children who admit enjoying reading has grown for the first time in the past 8years．
    So it's a good time to launch a competition that includes a shed-load of new books for schools as prizes．The Children's Book-show Competition，backed by The Independent，is taking to the roads again from the start of next term，with a nation-wide tour of 15big cities，featuring a line-up of a dozen children's writers and illustrators（插图画家）aiming to persuade pupils to follow their footsteps．
    The competition，launched by the children's writer and illustrator Jessica Souhami，has two categories：the under-nine's and nine to 13-year-olds．

    Unlike tracking，which means sorting students into separate classrooms，ability grouping happens within classrooms．When done according to the latest research，it has proven to promote achievement．
    Ability grouping is changeable and temporary．Within classrooms，students might be divided into different learning groups dealing with materials of different levels．Any students who master concepts can move upward between groups，and the student groups might look different from subject to subject and unit to unit．For instance，a student who stands out in language arts might be at an average or slower level in math．A student who flies through multiplication tables might need extra help with fractions．Students who lag in reading can be pulled out of the classroom in small groups for practice with a tutor until their reading improves．
    Research shows ability grouping within classes has more positive benefits than tracking．However，that must be weighed against the challenges involved．In many regular classrooms，the differences between student ability levels are very big．That presents challenges for teachers and low-performing students to constantly compare themselves with students who seem to fly through school with ease．
    The rigid ability groups and tracking of the past are still with us in many schools．Likely，labels are applied with more caution than in the bad old days when some teachers gave reading groups not-so-secret code names like"Bluebirds""Robins""Crows"and"Buzzards"．But kids still know．

    4．Phrases like"tiger mom"and"helicopter parent"have made their way into everyday language．Many of us find ourselves drawn to the idea that with just a bit more parental hard work and effort，we might turn out children with bright futures．But is there anything wrong with a kind of"overparenting style"？
    Parental involvement has a long history of being studied．Many of the studies，conducted by Diana Baumrind，a famous psychologist at the University of California，Berkeley，have found that a good parent is the one who is involved and reacts to her child in a positive way，who sets high expectations but gives her child independence．These"authoritative parents"appear to hit the sweet spot of parental involvement and generally raise children who do better academically，psychologically and socially than children whose parents are not strict and less involved，or controlling and more involved．Why is this parenting style so successful？
    Authoritative parents actually help improve motivation in their children．Carol Dweck，a social psychologist at Stanford University，has done research that indicates why authoritative parents raise more motivated children．In a typical experiment，Dr．Dweck takes young children into a room and asks them to solve a simple puzzle．Most do so with little difficulty．But then Dr．Dweck tells some，but not all，of the kids how clever they are．As it turns out，the children who are not told they're smart are more motivated to solve increasingly difficult puzzles．They also show higher levels of confidence and show greater progress in puzzle-solving．
    As the experiment suggests，praising children's talents and abilities seems to shake their confidence．Dealing with more difficult puzzles carries the risk of losing one's status as"smart"．Dr．Dweck's work strongly supports that of Dr．Baumrind，who also found that reasonably supporting a child's independence and limiting interference （干涉） causes better academic and emotional results．
    The central task of growing up is to develop a sense of self that is independent and confident．If you treat your young child who is just learning to walk as if she can't walk，you reduce her confidence．Allowing children to make mistakes is one of the greatest challenges of parenting．It is easier when they are young．The potential mistakes carry greater risks，and part of being a parent is reducing risk for our children．
