        A poor traveller stopped under the tree to eat the boiled rice and vegetables which he had brought with him. A few metres away , there was a small shop by the side of the road where a woman was frying （油炸） fish and selling it to travellers. The woman watched the poor traveller carefully, and when he finished his food and began to go, she shouted rudely, “You haven't paid me for the fried fish!”

    　　“But I have not had any fried fish!” he said.

    　　“But everyone can see that you enjoyed the smell of my fried fish with your rice and vegetables ,” said the woman , “If you had not smelled the fish , your meal would not have been so pleasant!”

    　　Soon a crowd collected, and although they supported the poor traveller, they had to admit that wind was blowing from the shop to the place where he had eaten, and that it had carried the smell of the fried fish to him.

    　　Finally, the woman took the poor traveller to a judge , who said , “The woman says that the traveller ate his meal with the smell of her fried fish. The traveller agrees that the wind was blowing from the woman's shop to the place where he ate his rice and vegetables and that it carried the smell of her fried fish to his nose while he was eating, so he must pay for it. What does your fried fish cost” he asked the woman.

    　　“Twenty-five cents a plate ,” she answered , delighted.

    　　“Then go outside together,” said the judge. “There the traveller must hold up a twenty-five cent piece so that its shadow （影子） falls on the woman's hand. The price of the smell of a plate of fried fish is the shadow of twenty-five cents.”

    　　It may be one of Britain’s most successful exports – Miss World．This 53-year-old event took place in China last week and attracted over 120 women worldwide with knockout looks in a mad struggle for the crown．

    　　Traditional values have long kept the Chinese, especially women, from displaying beauty．But Chinese people have now changed their attitude toward beauty contest, although some men will still be shouting that the winner is no more beautiful than his wife or his former girl friend or even his mother in a sour tone．But such men are not shouting for the right reason．The question to be：Why isn’t there a Mr．World Beauty Contest?

    　　And a further question to be asked is：Does taking part in a beauty contest show a woman’s courage, wisdom and liberation or rather the opposite－ forced choice and a revolting act made under conditions of long-term discrimination?

    　　Organizers of such beauty contests claim that the contestants are judged on qualities other than just their physical appearance．But still no answer is given to why there isn’t a Mr．Beauty or a Mr．World Contest? Or at least, why isn’t that kind of contest popular? Why is it that only women’s “qualities” need to be recognized but not men’s?

    　　Think about who is always standing beside a fancy car on show? Is it a boy or a girl? And this is how “qualities” are judged：if the girl looks good, there is little reason why the car beside her is not of high quality．

    　　The beauty contests go on year after year, with winners enjoying fame which quickly disappears．While such events go on and on, what never changes is the routine practice that in every fancy car show, a girl stands beside a fancy car．What never changes is the need to hold a women’s conference every year to appeal for the promotion of respect for and improvement of women．What never changes is the fate of women as a class．So let’s put more time and resources into trying to change all this rather than holding beauty contests．

    Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is one of the most loved children’s books of all time, and many adults enjoys it as well. It tells the story of a young girl named Alice, who follows a rabbit entering a magical world called Wonderland. She has many experiences which seem to change the rules of reasoning or common sense. The popularity of the book comes from its imagination, interesting story, and art work.

    The writer of the book is Lewis Carroll．In fact, Lewis Carroll was not the writer's real name． His real name was Charles Dodgson．One day, he took a boat ride down the Thames River to have a picnic with three little girls who were friends of the family．To keep them entertained on the ride, he told them a story in which Alice, the middle child, was the main character．They enjoyed the story very much．

    Charles later wrote the story down under the name Alice’s Adventures Under Ground  and gave it to Alice as a Christmas present. Later, he gave a copy to his friend George MacDonald. George read it to his children and they loved it. George suggested to Charles that he make a book from his story. Charles then wrote more parts to the story until it was around 35,000 words. It was first printed in 1866, with art work by John Tenniel, under the name Alice’s  Adventures in Wonderland . The book was an immediate success.

    One of its first fans was Queen Victoria. She immediately requested a collection of all of Lewis Carroll’s works. She was surprised to find that they included many works on math. In fact, Charles Dodgson was a highly respected mathematician. This can be seen in many puzzles and plays on reasoning that appear in his books and poems.

    Since the story was first printed, it has kept selling up to the present day. It has been translated into over fifty languages and has had several movies based on it. The story is even mentioned in the popular l999 film The Matrix by the character Morpheus.
