It’s no secret that many students love music. Whether on your way to class, heading to the gym or hanging out with your friends, music just makes you feel good. Depending on the style you choose, it can give you energy or calm you down. Here are some other important reasons for listening to music.
Childhood memories. No matter how old you are, you will always remember a song from your past. Many people keep in mind a piece of music, or a number of pieces, from their childhood. Often when you hear that song, you begin to think of particular childhood memories, such as the song Old Houses in My Hometown. Music can bring back memories you may have forgotten.
Concentration development. Listening to music helps you develop your powers of concentration, especially when you are learning to play a musical instrument. This focus will also be useful in everyday life. You will concentrate deeper in school lessons, or even just in a simple conversation.
Motivation. Often , a song playing on the radio or from a CD will remind you of a situation you are experiencing. Sometimes just listening to that song can give you motivation to get through the situation at hand. Music can often touch us more deeply than words and makes us ready for a challenge.
Encouraging creativity. Music is a creative work of art. Though not everyone who listens to music becomes an artist, people listening to music are likely to feel more creative in the task they are doing, such as writing, painting or even cleaning the house.

1 A flood is the overflow of a huge amount of water onto normally dry land. Flooding occurs when the overflowing water submerges (淹没) land, and it causes a lot of problems. It is a cruel and violent expression of water.
2 Floods are often deadly and damaging. They kill lots of people, damage houses and crops, and cause extensive destruction. In broader terms, floods are of two types: natural floods and catastrophic floods. Natural floods are the floods that are caused naturally by the overflow of a huge volume of water, from rivers, lakes, oceans, or by heavy rain or downpours, hurricanes, and so on. Catastrophic floods are floods that are caused by some significant (重大的) or unexpected events, for instance, dam breakages.
3 Heavy rainfall is one of the major causes of floods. The level of water in rivers or lakes rises due to heavy rainfall. When the level of water rises above the river banks or dam, the water starts overflowing, which causes floods. Floods occur more in the regions that ____________.
4 Floods are also caused due to heavy snow melting. Global temperatures are rising due to global warming. The rising temperatures are making the snow caps melt faster. Continuous and fast melting snow raises the level of water in the oceans, which consequently raises the level of water in rivers, and when the level of water in rivers rises above the river banks, it causes floods.
5 Generally, floods occur more in low-lying areas or areas below sea level. One of the main reasons is that rivers flow slowly in these areas. The volume of water increases in low-lying areas. When the level of water rises in these regions, it causes floods.
6 Sometimes floods are caused due to poor dams that cannot hold great volume of water. Therefore, there are always different causes of floods. However, floods caused by humans can be avoided. Humans should let the nature go its own way.

Stamp collectors usually collect stamps only from certain countries or regions. The traditional method of stamp collecting is to organize stamp collection according to the issue dates.
Of course, there are many other methods of collecting stamps. You can collect stamps relating to a particular theme. For example, sport lovers may choose the Olympic theme. They try their best to find Olympic stamps issued by various parts of the world every four years. Some of them may want to concentrate on even more specific sport activities like ball games, gymnasium, swimming, etc.
If you like astronomy, you may be keen on collecting stamps describing the stars, planets, spacecraft, spacemen, etc. once you have fixed the topic, you no longer need to bother about stamps other than the theme you selected. Then, you can put all your effort to collect the stamps around it.
China issues zodiac animal stamps (十二生肖邮票) every year to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Zodiac animal stamps are extremely popular and a lot of collectors wait patiently for 12 years to collect a full set of them. Hong Kong’s Lunar New Year special stamp series began in 2000 with the Year of Dragon and the twelfth and final set was issued in 2011, the Year of Rabbit. Recently some Western countries have issued zodiac animal stamps, which attract a lot of attention as well.
You may choose any theme you like. However, you should bear in mind an essential point. The topic you choose should not be too narrow. Otherwise, it is very difficult to accumulate stamps around the topic. You will be depressed and even lose your interest in collecting stamps.
Collecting stamps with these is especially popular among teenagers because there is a wide range of choices for them. The main challenge is how you organize and expand your collection around your theme.
小题1:What is the main idea of the passage? (within 5 words)
小题2:What should you stick to when you collect stamps with themes? (within 8 words)
小题3:What should you do if you want to collect a full set of zodiac animal stamps? (within 7 words)
小题4:Which year comes ahead of the Dragon Year according to China’s zodiac animal? (within 4 words)
小题5:Why is it popular among teenagers by collecting stamps with various themes? (within 10 words)

【1】The other day my cousin sent me a message asking me, “How can I improve my English ?” I shut my eyes for a few seconds, during which, my mind went back to the early 90s when I was a ninth grader.
【2】Our English teacher was Mrs. Dubei at that time. She was a small, round woman with white and grey hair. As a loud woman she made her presence felt everywhere. Whether in the classroom, during a discussion, or just when greeting us, she would stop to ask us how much reading we had done on that particular day. She always advised and encouraged us to read, read and read. It didn’t matter whether it was an article, a page form a novel, or just a paragraph from a school magazine. She would always urge (力劝) us to "read, read and read" in order to learn new words and use them in our daily writing and conversation.
【3】Today, I feel strongly that it was because of the continuous, strong support of my English teacher that ________________. “You needn’t be a bookworm,” she would say. “Read, so that you can move ahead and journey into the depths of knowledge.”
【4】In addition to my teacher’s advice, my most important secret of learning English is: Don’t be in too much of a hurry. You are setting off on a long journey and there will be delays(耽搁) along the way. You should stick to it and take your time to really enjoy the happiness that English can bring.

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in not more than 15 words for each question.?
① “Hello” is one of the first words we learn as babies, yet it’s one of the last ones we think to use as adults. That’s unfortunate, because saying hello is more than just saying hello. It is recognition of another’s worth. How might the world change — how might we change — if we mastered this word? To find out, I spent one month saying hello to every person I met. Here’s what I’ve learned.
② It can boost(促进)productivity. In one of the few studies ever done on this subject, Allan Allday, an assistant professor of special education at Oklahoma State University, had middle school teachers greet their students individually each morning. This exchange of greetings raised the kids’ productivity. School went from impersonal to personal, and that resulted in more class participation (参与) and better grades.
③ Environments influence friendliness. One study found that people in the city were more likely to kiss one’s hands with a stranger than those in the countryside. And, researchers say, pleasant environments generally encourage more smiles and hellos than unpleasant one. My experience was similar. Whatever the reason, my urban hellos were answered far less often than my rural ones. Similarly, people in vacation spots, like the Jersey Shore, were far friendlier than those hurrying to work downtown.
④ It’s a form of universal health insurance. It’s impossible to say hello without smiling. And smiling has been shown to lower blood pressure, relieve stress and boost happiness. Apparently, a smile creates a similar effect in the recipient (接受者).
⑤ So maybe we can make the world a better place by saying hello to each other. After a month of doing it, I feel lighter and more connected and I have a better sense of well-being.
小题1: In the first paragraph, what does the author mean by saying “it’s one of the last ones we think to use as adults”?

It was at least two months before Christmas when nine-year-old Almie Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bicycle.
As Christmas drew nearer, her dream for a bicycle seemed to fade(逐渐消失), for she didn’t mention it again. We bought some beautiful story books for her and thought she would be happy to see them. However, on December 24, she said that she wanted a bike more than anything else.
It was just too late. We were busy with Christmas dinner and parking presents till midnight. So there was no time to buy a bicycle for our little girl. Thinking she would feel unhappy with the gift we gave her, we felt sad. We didn’t know what to do.
Suddenly my husband had a good idea. “ What if I make a little bicycle out of clay(泥) and write a note to tell her that she could trade the clay model in for a real bike?” My husband asked. I agreed. So he spent the next four hours patiently working with clay to make a tiny bike.
On Christmas morning, we were excited for Almie to open the little box with the beautiful red and white clay bike and the note. Finally, she opened it and read the note aloud.
Then she asked, “Does this mean that I can trade in this bike that Daddy made me for a real one?” Smiling, I said, “Yes.”

Perhaps you are an average student with average intelligence. However, you can receive better grades if you want. Yes, even students with average intelligence can be top students without additional work. Here’s how:
1.Plan your time carefully. Make a list of your weekly tasks. Then make a schedule of your time. Be sure to set aside enough time to complete your normal reading and work assignments. Of course, studying shouldn’t occupy all of the free time on the schedule.
2.Make good use of your time in class. Listening to what the teacher says in class means less work later. Take notes to help you remember what the teacher says.
3.Skim before you read. Look over a passage quickly before you begin to read it more carefully. As you preview the material, you get some idea of the content and how it is organized. Later when you begin to read you will recognize less important material and you may skip some of these portions, Skimming(略读)helps double your reading speed and improve your comprehension as well.
4.      . Go over your notes as soon as you can after class. Review important points mentioned in class as well as points you remain confused. If you know what the teacher will discuss the next day, skim and read that material, too. If you review your notes and textbook regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer. Regular review leads to improved performance on tests.
5.Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t worry excessively(过分地)about a single test.
There are other techniques that might help you with your studying. Improving your studying habits will improve your grades.
