         A lot of people are their own enemies. They regard themselves as unlikely to succeed in college and
    often feel that there have been no accomplishments (成就) in their lives. In my first year of college
    especially, I saw people get themselves down too quickly. There were two students in my class who failed the first test and seemed to give up immediately. From that day on, they walked into the classroom carrying defeat on their shoulders the way other students carried textbooks under their arms. When they

    A Tight Situation

    　　Sometimes funny memories are the best special way to remember a beloved lover．It helps take away some of the feeling of loss．Before he passed away, my husband loved to share this story with our friends．Now, it makes a smile to share this story with you．

    　　Our neighbor's son was getting married in 1971 at a church, and we were invited．We immediately rushed out for the store, and I bought a nice dress with a jacket．The dress was a little tight, but I had a month before the June 30- wedding and I would lose a few pounds．

    　　June 29 came and, of course, I had not lost a single pound; in fact, I had gained two．But, I thought a new girdle(健美裤)would solve my problem．So on our way to the wedding, we stopped once again at the store．I ran in and told the clerk I needed a size large girdle．

    　　The clerk found the box with the described girdle, marked “L”, and asked if I would like to try it on．“Oh, no, large will fit just right．I won't need to try it on．”

    　　The next morning was hot, so I waited to get dressed until about forty-five minutes before time to go．I opened the girdle box only to find a new ＄ 49.95 girdle in a size small．Since it was too late to find another one and the dress wouldn't fit right without a girdle, a fight broke out between me and the girdle．Have you ever tried to shake twenty pounds of potatoes into a five-pound bag?Finally, my husband, laughing like crazy, got hold of each side and shook me down into it, and I was ready to go．

    　　As we walked into the church, he asked if I could make it．Now, he was getting worried because I was breathing funny．I told him that I would．It lasted one hour, twenty-two minutes and eight-and-one-half seconds, and the minister blessed everything except my girdle!

    　　My knees were blue and my legs lost all the feeling．My husband was asking questions and trying to comfort me．

    　　As soon as the minister pronounced them married, I rushed out with my husband．“Please, just get me out of here!” I said．

    　　We ran out to our car, and once there he opened the front and back passenger doors against the next car．Right there, before God, human and the wedding party, I took off that girdle．When the girdle flew out of my hand and landed under the car next to ours, my husband was laughing so hard and we drove away．

    　　Over the years, he and I had wondered what the people of that church thought the next morning when they found＄49.95, size small girdle in their parking lot．

         A British student writing for the Guardian's website recently attracted the criticism of
    thousands of readers with his very first post.
         Max Gogarty, 19, had started a blog about his trip to India and Thailand. The idea was
    not paiticularly original and. in many people's view, the writing wasn't either.Within minutes,
    people began to post negative comments:"l've been more entertained cleaning mould from
    my fridge than I was reading your first post. "
         So how did Max land his job? The Guardian's online community soon reached their own
    conclusion :" Great to see nepotism ( 任人唯亲) is alive and well."said one poster.
         Max's father is a travel writer who had previously published work in the Guardian.
    Within minutes, one poster had provided a link to an article from 2002 , in which Max's
    dad writes about a trip to Thailand with his family. Many were quick to suppose Max had
    used his father's connections to get his job. By the end of the next day, the criticism was so
    heavy that the blog was closed, but the damage had been done.
         From Facebook to Wikipedia. social networking and gossip websites all over the
    Internet were discussing Max's case.
         Max's experience highlights the difference between traditional media and the Internet.
    As online community specialist DanWilsonwritesinhisblog: " Inthe blogosphere respect
    comes from below. Readers have power and opinions that count. You've got to be real
    and attractive to the people who read you. "
         Part of the reason for this is that falsehoods and half-truths canbe exposed(曝光)
    immediately online.For example, the Guardian's travel editor attempted to defend publishing
    the story. He said he'd called Max because of his track record and talent. But then one

    he writes occasionally for the TV program Skins'? Are you a liar?"

          A rainforest is an area covered by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite equally through
    the year and the temperature rarely dipping below 16℃. Rainforests have a great effect on the world
    environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate.
         Without the forest cover, these areas would reflect more heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest
    of the world. Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially causing
    certain natural disasters all over the world.
         In the past hundred years, humans have begun destroying rainforests in search of three major
    resources (资源):land forcrops, wood for paper and other products ,land for raising farm animals. This

    comes from burning the rainforests. People obviously have a need for the resources we gain from cutting

    the land for a year or two. Secondly, cutting large sections of rainforests may provide a good supply of
    wood right now,but in the long run it actually reduces the world's wood supply.
         Rainforests are often called the world's drug store. More than 25% of the medicines we use today
    come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than l% of rainforest plants have been examined for
    their medical value. It is extremely likely that our best chance to cure diseases lies somewhere in the
    world's shrinking rainforests.
