A Letter of Appeal?
To everyone on our planet,?
Over the past years, floods, droughts, landslides, and duststorms have frequented our planet, the only habitat of human beings. We can't forget tsunami(º£Ð¥) swept the Southeast Asia, which caused enormous damage. All these have sounded an alarm to human beings.?
Man has damaged the environment almost to the extent of ruining his own living space. If we pay no attention to the present destructive human activities, our planet will become a tomb instead of a comfortable home. What's more, we should realize that only from our planet can we obtain our sheltering, food, cloth and so forth.?
If we want to continue to live in this world, we had better try our best to protect our natural environment. Counter-measures must be taken to stop the destruction caused by human beings. Most importantly, laws must be established to punish those who are involved in destructive conducts.?
Sincerely yours,
Li Hua

It is reported that two 66-year-old men graduated this summer from Sun Yat-sen University, a well-known university in Guangzhou.
Li Yiquan, a Chinese-Singaporean, earned a postgraduate(Ñо¿Éú) degree in software engineering, while Ang Toon Aun, a Chinese-Malaysian, earned a bachelor's degree with a major in Chinese as a foreign language.
Li, a retired engineer, now lives in Hong Kong. His daughter also received a postgraduate degree this year, but from a British university. So she participated in his graduation ceremony in Guangzhou. Li said he had a special feeling for Sun Yat-sen University because his parents and brother graduated from there.
It wasn't easy for Li to return to school while in his 60s, he said. He failed math exams several times after beginning classes, even though he had a good foundation in math; he graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University majoring in physics 40 years ago and worked as an engineer before retiring.
Ang Toon Aun, 66, was tired of his business career, so he decided to study Chinese at the university and passed level 9, the highest level of the Chinese Test.
"There's nothing in the world that makes me happier than study," said Aun. Many old people in Malaysia were encouraged to keep studying after retirement, but few of them chose to study on campus for a degree as he did.

Every morning, when I drive past the street corner, I can always see the big sign standing outside the gas station.
The sign lists the price of gas per gallon (¼ÓÂØ). However, in the past few months, the price never seemed to decrease. One day, it went from US$2.85 to US$3.55 per gallon.
The car is one of the most popular forms of transportation in southern California; people even say, ¡°We can not live without cars!¡± ¡°We don¡¯t get any benefit from the increasing prices at all,¡± complains my friend Raymond. ¡°I might choose to ride my bicycle from now on! I will leave the car at home; maybe I should give it away to the museum since we are not going to use it anyway.¡±
According to scientific predictions, we will run out of gasoline in 50 years. People will not be able to drive cars, take planes or even sail ships. When the time comes, hardly anything will function normally.
In this case, governments will have to provide funds (»ù½ð) to research departments to develop new forms of energy on which cars can run. One idea, for example, is that people in California will be able to drive solar- powered cars since it is extremely sunny most of the time.
In other states, there are people developing new forms of fuel involving alcohol mixed with gasoline or new hybrids (»ìºÏÎï) like gasoline plus corn oil. Who knows what forms of new energy people will be using in the future? Without problems showing up, there will be no new solutions. Society needs to move forward. Sometimes, we need these challenges to motivate (¼¤·¢) us to achieve great things.
