My father and I disagreed about curfew (晚间在家的时间). He'd say I was to be in by 9:30 on weekdays, and 11:00 on weekends, no exceptions without my first asking. I told him it made me ____ like a juniorhigh kid. He explained that while a curfew ____ sound like a restriction, it's really about people looking out for one another.
The very next Friday after that pretty heated ___, my dad and I had tickets to see our town's professional football game. On that day he was ____ to a nearby city to meet with some major clients and ____ me that his getting home and our leaving for the game would be tight.
To make sure we could ____ off the moment he walked in, I got everything prepared. When a half hour had passed from the time he said he'd be home, I understood that he was a little ____. But then, nearly a whole hour passed. I was getting ____. We were going to miss the kickoff! And why hadn't he ____ me and let me know he was going to be really late? As I anxiously ____ the floor, another half hour passed. That's when I got really angry. How inconsiderate of my father! Now we were going to ____ the whole game! When yet another half hour passed, my anger turned to ____. What if something terrible had happened to my dad, like he had a heart attack or had been in an accident, or something? I began to really ____. I'd already called his cellphone about ten times, but no ____.
I was beside myself, assuming the worst had happened.
Finally, the phone rang, and my dad said ____, “Son, I'm so sorry about the game, but…there was a terrible accident…on the freeway coming home, and I ____ to help… and ended up going to the hospital. I ____ my cellphone in the car, so I couldn't call until now.”
I was so relieved to hear from my father and to ____ that he was safe that I actually cried. That was ____ I “got” the importance of a curfew: Checking in! It's about knowing that someone you love is ____. It was one more proof of my father's loving me as much as he does.

It was the last day of the final examination in a large eastern university. On the steps of one building, a group of engineering seniors gathered, discussing the exam due to begin in a few    . On their faces was confidence(自信). This was their last exam—then on to    and jobs.
Some talked of jobs they already had; others talked of jobs they    get. With the certainty of four years of college, they felt ready and able to take    of  the world.
The coming exam, they knew, would be a(n)             task. The professor had said they could bring          books or notes they wanted, requesting only that they did not         each other during the test.
they entered the classroom. The professor passed out the papers. And smiles      on the students’ faces as they noted there were only five essay-type questions.
Three hours had passed        the professor began to collect the papers. The students no longer looked confident. On their faces was a frightened expression. Papers in hand, no one spoke as the professor faced the class.
He looked at the        faces before him, and then asked, “How many completed all five questions?”        a hand was raised.
“How many answered four?” Still no hands.
“Three? Two?” The students moved restlessly in their seats.
“One, then? Certainly somebody finished       .” But the class remained silent.
The professor put down the papers. “That is exactly what I       ,” He said. “I just want to impress upon you that        you have completed four years of engineering, there are still many things about the          you don’t know. These questions you couldn’t answer are relatively         in everyday practice.” Then smiling, he added, “You will all       this course, but remember—even though you are now college graduates, your education has just       .”
Over years they have        the name of  his professor, but not the lesson he taught.

Travis laughed as he tore at the wrapping paper on his birthday present. He was so       ! Finally, he would have the coolest pair of name-brand basketball shoes.
All the guys on his team were wearing the name-brand shoes of a popular basketball       , Chuck Hart.         Hart was criticized for his poor sportsmanship and infamous      , he was a great player. In fact, Travis wasn't thinking about Hart' s behavior; he had only expected to see Hart’s       on the side of the box. The first indication that something was       came as he tore away the last piece of paper. Not Hart’s. The new shoes were the name-brand of another player, Robert Ryann, who was       for his amazing work in the community.
Travis’s hands       ; his heart stopped. It wasn't that the Ryann shoes weren’t nice, but what would his friends think ?
They were the wrong shoes and Travis would be       by the other players. When he looked up into his dad' s eyes, however, Travis decided he      not tell him. "'Thanks, Dad. I was really hoping for shoes," Travis said as he pulled the shoes out of the box.
Next morning his dad drove him to school. When they       in front of his destination, Travis slowly opened the car door. Just then, his dad stopped him.
“Hey, Travis, wait a minute, look…” his dad said       ,“Travis, I know those aren’t the shoes you had hoped for, but I saw the names of the two guys and made a(n)      . The guy whose name is on those shoes,” he said, pointing down at Travis’s feet, “is someone I       . Do you know how often Ryann has found himself in      ?”
“No,” Travis said.
“Never. He’s never talked back to his coach or started a fight, and he’s a team player. You could have acted like a (n)       when you didn’t get the shoes you wanted, Travis,       you were polite and made the best of it. You have such a good       , like the guy whose name is on these shoes. I’m hoping that someday, your name will be on the coolest pair of shoes I’ll ever see.”
When Travis looked down at his feet, he saw the shoes       . His dad had used his mind and heart to give the son a thoughtful       .
