Ever since Jerusha started her college, she began to write letters. Through a series of letters, from freshman to senior in college, she shared her life and study with an unknown gentleman, who never wrote back. Here is the very first letter.
Dear Mr. Kind,
Here I am! I traveled yesterday for four hours in a train. It's a funny experience. I never rode in one
before.
College is the biggest, most confusing place - I get lost whenever I leave my room. I will tell you more
later when I'm feeling less puzzled. Now I want to write a letter first just to get me familiar to you.
It seems strange to be writing letters to somebody you don't know. It seems strange for me to be
writing letters at all - I've never written more than three or four in my life, so please overlook it if they are
not a model kind.
Before leaving yesterday morning, Mrs. Lippett and I had a very serious talk. She told me how to
behave, especially towards the kind gentleman who is doing so much for me. I must take care to be very
respectful.
I have been thinking of you a great deal this summer; having somebody take an interest in me after all
these years makes me feel as though I had found a sort of family. It seems as though I belonged to
somebody now, and it's a very comfortable feeling. I must say, however, that when I think about you, my
imaqination has very little to work upon.

There are just three things that I know:
     I .You are tall.
     II .You are rich.
     III. You hate girl.
I suppose I might call you Dear Mr. Girl-Hater. Only that's rather unpleasant to me. Or Dear Mr. Rich-Man, but that's unpleasant to you, as though money were the only important thing about you. Maybe you won't stay rich all your life; But at least you will stay tall all your life! So I decide to call you Dear
Daddy-long-legs. I hope you won't mind. It's just a private pet name - we won't tell Mrs. Lippett. The
ten o'clock bell is going to ring in two minutes. Our day is divided by bells. We eat and sleep and study by bells. There it goes! Lights out. Good night.
You can see how strictly I obey rules due to my training in the John Grier Home.
                                                                                                                   Yours most respectfully,
                                                                                                                          Jerusha Abbott

C. To share her brand-new college life with him.
D. To apologize to him for not writing letters too often.

probably_____.
A. burst into laughter

Halloween is a festival (节日) celebrated on October 31st. The name of the holiday means“hallowed”or“holy evening”because it happens the day before All Saints Day (万圣节) . It is said that Halloween is the children's New Year's Eve. They dress up with special costumes(服装), they eat too much, and stay up too late celebrating.

Children go around the neighborhood wearing make-up, and dress in masks(面具) and colorful costumes. The most common costumes are witches, ghosts, skeletons (骷髅) , and popular TV, movie, and storybook characters. Some costumes are homemade; others are bought in stores. Having divorced (离婚) my dad, my mom had to move frequently in order to find a job that would provide her with enough money to support the big family. For three years, we lived in the town of Parkersburg. On the first Christmas there, my brothers and I had been well prepared for a holiday without presents. But we had a surprise on Christmas Eve.
At midnight, we were woken up by someone shouting at our front door, “Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas!” We jumped up and ran to the door to find no one there, but several boxes and bags! Mom was beginning to get on her feet. Since we had moved and Mom had a better job, we were quite certain that “Santa” wouldn’t visit us that year. But we were wrong!
Those “Santa” visits restored in me the belief in the goodness of mankind, though to this day we don’t know who our helper was.
When we grew up, Mom moved to Virginia. She had some extra money one Christmas. She sent it to me and let us know her decision. We then took action. My husband and children had so much fun buying and wrapping presents for the needy family we had chosen.    When my first wartime Christmas came, I was in basic training in New Jersey and not sure if I could make it home for the holidays. Only on the afternoon of December 23 was the list of men who would have three-day passes posted. I was one of the lucky soldiers. It was Christmas Eve when I arrived home, and a light snow had fallen. Mother opened the front door. I could see beyond her, into the corner of the living room where the tree had always stood. There were lights, all colors, and ornaments shining against the green of a pine. "Where did it come from?" I asked.

"I asked the Gates boy to cut it," my mother said. "I wouldn't have had one just for myself, but-such a rush! He just brought it in this afternoon…" The pine reached to the proper height, almost to the ceiling, and the Tree Top Krystal Star was its place. A few green branches reached about a little awkwardly at the side, I thought, and there was a bit of bare trunk showing in the middle. But the, tree filled the room with warm light and the whole house with the pleasant smell of Christmas.  "It's not like the one you used to find." my mother went on. "Yours were always in good shape. I suppose the Gates boy didn't know where to look. But I couldn't be fussy(挑剔的)."

"Don't worry," I told her. "It's perfect." It wasn't, of course, but at the moment I realized something for the first time: all Christmas trees are perfect.
