         Speaking of what sort of smartness is most desirable in human conduct, a friend of mine has this to say:
    Real stnartness must be something that can be practised repeatedly and infinitely. Then, he goes on to relate
    this event: In one European country there resided some Lebanese. Upon learning that ambulance rides there
    are provided free to patients in emergency cases, they rented an apartment near a hospital. Each time they
    wanted to go home, they just pretended to be sick, calling for an ambulance. On arrival at the hospital, they
    said now that they felt much better and had no need of any treatment. The next moment saw them leaving,
    safe and sound, to their apartment.
         Their "being-clever" affords them only short-lived pleasure and joy; it could not he practised repeatedly,
    still less infinitely. Such smartness is based on "too clever to be wise". Once seen through, they will lose the
    benefits they profited by playing dirty tricks. They will suffer the impairment of their own image and reputation
    as well as that of those who are tied with them by blood or by common interests.
         When a person has done something to the discredit of one's own image and reputation, it will surely involve
    others related to him in one way or another. Among those inflicted most hy what folly (愚蠢) he may have
    done are those who, to him, have been close in relations and dear in sentiment.
         Additionally, whether one's act is wise or unwise, rather the summit of wisdom, depends on the result of

         My wife, Eleanor, and I took the train from Paris to Strasbourg, where we were met by our driver and
    guide. And the minibus which goes along with the boat. We stopped off in Barn for an hour on the way.
    Then we were taken to Nancy where the boat was kept.
         After the other passengers arrived, we had our first dinner on the boat. After dinner we walked into
    downtown Nancy, a village with a large square and wooden houses.

         Monday, October 5
         Rained last night, cloudy in the morning, 69°F
         We spent about two hours in Nancy, then sailed on the Canal de la Marne au Rhine. Kind of a lazy day.
    Eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner, after dinner we watched a tape on Baccarat. Where we will visit tomorrow.
         It was pleasant to sit out on deck (甲板) and watch the scenery go by at about 3 mph.

         Monday, October 7
         Light rain, 64°F
         This mourning we drove over to Baccarat and toured its museum and the church, which has this
    unbelievable lamp that is going on a world tour the next day. We did lost of shopping, then walked across the
    bridge to see a very, very modern Catholic church with special Baccarat windows.
         We drove to the top of the Voges Mountains and started down the eastern side Later we drove to
    Sorrenbourg to see the 13th century church at the Cordeliers. It contains the largest window by Marc Chagall-
    24 feet wide by 40 feet high.

         Wednesday, Ocrober 8
         Cloudy.65 °F
         Today we sailed from Schneckenbush to Saverne. We went though two caves, an extremely unusual part
    of the journey. This river scenery is very different. We were in a mountain valley with grassland on one side
    and a forest beginning to show some color on the other.

         Thursday, Ocrober 9
         Cloudy, 66°F 
         Our dependable minibus was waiting to load the luggage and take us to the hotel where everyone went their
    separate ways. Our boating days are over until next time.

    in Britain today. And paying someone else to do the chores (家务活) which take the average housewife 71

         A wife with a part-time job still works and average of 59 hours a week at home. Those in full-time
    employment put in longer hours at home than in the workplace. The good news is that these hours sharply as
    children get older. While the average mother with child under one puts in 90 hours weekly, the figure drops to
    80 hours from one to four and to 66 hours from five to ten.
         Mother-of-four Karen Williams from London said, "Paying the housewives may not be practical, but the
    government should recognize the value of housework, perhaps through the tax. Running a house takes a lot
    of time and most husbands don't understand this. For example, my husband only puts a shelf up now and
    again. He never cleans the kitchen-that's the real test."

    the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situations, not to be trapped in them.
         Myth Number Three: Safety belts aren't needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour.
         Truth: When two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other, an unbelted driver would meet the windshield
    with a force equal to diving head first into the ground from a height of 10 meters.

         The other day, my friend Jane was invited to a 40th birthday party. The time printed on the invitation was
