         Koala bears as pets might be appealing to many of us. However, there are quite a few points
    to consider even before thinking of adopting one.
         In Australia the koala is a priority animal as far as conservation status assessment is concerned.
    It was hunted to near extinction(灭绝)for its fur. In fact the koala had been wiped out from South
    Australia in the 1920s. However, ehabilitation efforts have brought the animal back in the state. As
    for the Australian government, the koala is not a threatened animal, but the US government does list
    the koala as one.
         Almost everyone finds koala adorable in the zoo. However, as far as having koala bears as pets
    is concerned, there are legal issues to consider. Other than that, being able to provide for its diet and
    habitat is another point that needs some attention before any law legalizing their adopting as pets is passed.

    　　Sydney is one of Australia's oldest, largest and liveliest cities with a population of more than three million. It is a colorful, modern city but it is also a natural beauty with green park land and perhaps the world's most beautiful deep-water harbor.

    　　Besides modern buildings and roads, the city has many places of historical interest. For example, Mr. Macquarie's Chair, the area called the Rocks dating back to the early nineteenth century, and attractive rows of houses of Paddington, are all close to the harbor and the city center.

    　　Sydney has many other attractions of tourist importance - a zoo, Koala Bear Park and Sydney Opera House which lies at the water's edge. Some say that the Opera House is one of the most outstanding examples of beautifully designed modem buildings in the world. There are all kinds of restaurants, theatres, nightclubs and sports facilities(设施；场所). There is also a network of communications within the city, including an underground railway, buses and taxis. Sydney has a very pleasant climate. Usually the average temperature in summer is just a little above 20℃, and in winter not below 12℃ .

         The koala. one of Australia's most treasured creatures, is introuble.
        Affected by habitat (栖居地) loss and climate change, like many other uniquely Australian animals, koalas are being squeezed into smaller regions. But at present, it is a deadly disease, a somewhat silent killer that causes a further decline in the koala population, that is worrying many scientists about the fate of the koala.
         The killer is Chlamydia, which has caused symptoms in up to 50 percent of the wild koalas, with probably even more infected (感染) but not showing symptoms. It has been particularly severe in Queensland, where nearly all koalas are infected. The disease causes many symptoms including eye infections, which can lead to blindness, making it difficult for them to find their primary food.
         Treating Chlamydia in wild koalas is a challenge. There is no treatment available for it. Only a small percentage of the animals can be treated successfully and returned
    to the wild. Besides, there is no national plan in Australia to save the koala;it is up to each region to make management plans for its koala population.
         The good news is that researchers are working to test a vaccine (疫苗) that would help prevent further spread. If all goes well, plans can be carried out to distribute the vaccil1e more widely. But it's impossible to vaccinate all wild koalas.
         Another possibility would be to make vaccine distribution a routi11e part of treatment for the thousands of koalas brought into care centers every year after they are injured by cars or dogs.
         While it is a combination of problems that are affecting the wild koala population, many expects believe this vaccine would be an important step in helping koalas survive longer. It may buy enough time to give researchers a chance to solve some of the other problems facing Australia's koalas.

    Sam was found moving on scorched paws by a fire patrol Sunday. Tree then held out a bottle of water for her to drink, which she eagerly accepted, holding Tree's hand as he poured water into her mouth.

    After suffering second-and-third-degree burns to her paws, Sam has been sharing a cage with Bob, who took an immediate interest in her when she arrived on Sunday.
