Go ahead, talk to your dog.
As many a dog owner will prove, our furry friends are listening. Now, for the doubters, there is
scientific proof that they understand much of what they hear.A border collie called Rico can fetch at
least 200 objects by name, researchers in Germany say.The dog also appears to learn words for new
objects as easily as a 3yearold child would. Its wordlearning skill is as good as that of a parrot or
chimpanzee.
In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided
them randomly into 20 sets of 10 objects each. The dog waited with one of his owners in one room,
while an experimenter put a set of 10 objects into another room. Then, the owner told the dog to fetch
one of the items.  The dog had to go to the other room and bring the object back
In four trials, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right.Because the dog couldn't see anyone to get visual
clues about what to bring back, the scientists concluded that he must understand the meanings of certain
words.
In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a
room with seven toys whose names he already knew. The dog's owner then told him to fetch the object,
using a word Rico had never heard.
In 7 out of 10 trials, Rico picked the right object, suggesting that he figured out the answer by
process of elimination.A month later, he remembered half of the new names, which further impressed the
researchers.
Rico is probably smarter than the average dog, the scientists say.For one thing, he's a border collie,
a breed known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9yearold dog has been trained to retrieve toys by
their names since he was 9 months old.
It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say.Even if they do, they can't
talk back.Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweettalk your pup every now and then. You might just get a big, wet
kiss in return!

1. It is implied that________.

A. Rico is probably cleverer than the average dog
B. Only a few dogs can talk back to its owner
C. if a chimpanzee is trained, it can also recognize the names of objects
D. All dogs can understand words

2. How long is it since Rico's owner began to train him?

A. nine months
B. 3 years.
C. over nine years.
D. more than eight years.

3. Rico can do all the following except________.
A. understanding the meanings of certain words
B. picking the right object by process of elimination
C. remembering all of the new names he learned
D. retrieving toys by their names

Many people wonder why the United States has been a hot spot for Chinese students for years,
despite its extremely strict visa policy. On the other hand, China's rise as an economic powerhouse is
resulting in a rapid expansion of its higher education system, making it the fastergrowing destination for
American foreign exchange students.
Recently, according to a study by the Institute of International Education, a research organization
based in New York, the number of American students seeking higher education in China has never been
greater, increasing by 90 percent from 2002 to 2004. Alan Goodman, president of the institute, believes
that the_phenomenon lies in the pace of change in China, which is spending billions of dollars to expend
and transform its higher educational facilities into worldclass institutions.
"China is a job market, " said Professor Chou, professor of East Asian Studies at Princeton
University. "Twenty years ago, only those interested in Chinese literature would study the Chinese
language. Now all professors have opened up. "
China now ranks 9th as a host destination for American students, advancing from the No. 12 spot it
held a year earlier. The study revealed that Britain continues to be the leading destination, attracting
16. 8 percent of all American students who study abroad. On the other hand, in the 2004~2005
academic year, China sent more than 62,000 students to the United States, nearly 60 percent more than
a decade earlier. According to the study, the Chinese now make up 11 percent of foreign students in the
United States, the secondlargest group behind students from India.

Compared to people with bad attitudes,  people who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer
from colds,  according to a new study."It's possible that being upbeat helps the body fight illnesses,  "
says Sheldon Cohen,  the study's lead researcher from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh.
In a previous study,  Cohen and his colleagues put coldcausing viruses into the noses of 334 healthy
adults.People who tended to be cheerful and lively were least likely to develop sniffles,  coughs,  and
other cold symptoms.People who showed positive feelings were also less likely to mention symptoms to
their doctors,  even when medical tests detected those symptoms.
Those findings were interesting,  but they didn't prove that a person's attitude affects whether he or
she gets sick.Instead,  it was still possible that a person's underlying personality is what matters.Evidence
suggests,  for instance,  that certain people are naturally more likely to be outgoing and optimistic,  with
high selfesteem and a sense of control over life. This would mean that who we are,  not how we feel,
ultimately decides our chances of catching colds.
To figure out which mattered more (personality or emotions),  the CMU team interviewed 193
healthy adults. The researchers talked to each person over the phone every evening for 2 weeks. At the
end of the interviewing period,  people got nose drops that contained either cold or flu viruses. Then,
each person stayed in an isolated room for 5 or 6 days. The results showed that everyone in the study
was equally likely to get infected.Their symptoms,  however,  differed depending on the types of emotions
that they had reported over the previous 2 weeks.Among those who reported good moods and had been
infected with the flu virus,  for example,28 percent developed coughs and stuffy noses. On the other
hand,  those symptoms struck 41 percent of people who had been less upbeat.

1. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Smiles Turn away Colds
B. An Interesting Way to Beat Colds
C. Be Outgoing and Optimistic to Fight Colds
D. What Matters More,  Personality or Emotions?

2. In the previous study,  people who showed positive feelings______.

A. didn't catch colds as often
B. developed cold symptoms more slowly
C. were less likely to have cold symptoms detected
D. were less likely to feel cold symptoms

3. What mainly decides our chances of catching colds according to the new study?

A. Personality.
B. Selfesteem.
C. Emotions.
D. Attitudes.

4. The underlined word "symptoms" probably means________.

A. something that causes cold
B. something that results in cold
C. signs that something exists,  especially something bad
D. changes in your body or mind that show that you are not healthy

While it is impossible to live completely free of stress, it is possible to prevent stress as well as reduce its
effect when it can't be avoided. The US Department of Health and Human Services offers the following
suggestions for ways to deal with stress.
     ◆Try physical activity
When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise or physical activity.
Running, walking, playing tennis, and working in your garden are just some of the activities you might try.
     ◆Take care of yourself
You should make every effort to eat well and get enough rest. If you easily get angry and can't sleep well
enough, or if you're not eating properly, it will be more likely that you will fall into stressful situations. If stress
repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should consult a doctor.
     ◆Make time for yourself
Schedule time for both work and entertainment. Don't forget, play can be just as important to your overall
well-being as work. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun. Go window-shopping
or work on a hobby. Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.
◆Make a list of things to do
Stress can come from disorganization and a feeling that"there's so much to do, and not enough time".
Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and as a result, you may not achieve anything. Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, then do one thing at a time, checking off each task as it is
completed. Set out to do the most important task first.
1. Why does the writer write this passage?
A. To give descriptions.
B. To make suggestions.
C. To raise problems.
D. To ask for advice.
2. The underlined word "releasing" is closest in meaning to"______".

Do you know how to be happy? Here are six ways for you to find more pleasure in your life.
Play that song you love so much. As a preschooler can tell you, repetition can lead to pleasure.
When you experience something more than once, you notice more details about it each time, and it
increases your enjoyment. That's why you love revisi ting that jazz club, favourite restaurant, and
beloved old Woody Allen movie. Of course, you can overdo it.
Don't buy boxed sets of DVDs. Economist(经济学家) Tyler says that much of the joy we get
from our buying lies in the experience of finding them out, getting them home, and opening them up.
If you receive 18 DVDs in one package, you'll use up the excitement all at once. Buy things one a time
and space out the pleasure.
Look outside. People long ago spent almost all of their time outside with trees, water, and sky
around. The world in which most of us spend our time nowadays is unnatural and can harm the spirit.
Even being close to nature for a short time can make us happy. ________. Physical contact with
animals works wonders. You can pet an animal. It increases the brain chemicals connected with
pleasure and decreases those connected with stress(压力). Even people without pets can get some
of the effect by hanging out for a few minutes at a dog shelter.
Smile. Well, like it or not, smiling improves your mood. Here's why: people react better to you
when you look happy, which in turn leads you to be happy. What's more, looking happy fools your
brain into thinking that you are happy.
1. According to the writer, buying things one at a time can ____________.
A. helps us save some money.
B. spare time for other activities
C. increase our experience of happiness
D. give us more time to consider buying things.
2. What's the best title for Paragraph 5 ?
A.  Exercise the brain
B. Pet an animal
C.  Reduce work stress
D. Hang out more often
3.Which of the following is right?
A. Smiles fools others' mood.
B. Repetition results in pleasure.
C. Animals adds to your stress.
D. Spending time outside harms your spirit.
4.What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?
A. The effect of pleasure on life.
B. The writer's own experience.
C. Another way to find pleasure.
D. Reasons for finding more pleasure.

Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take the fact of friendship for
granted, we often don't clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number
of people, __1__
Moreover, a great many relationships come under the general term "friendship". In all cases, two
people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of closeness between
them and the reasons for their interest in each other change greatly.
At the beginning, much depends on how people meet, and on good first impressions. As we get to
know people, __2__Although these factors are not of the greatest importance, it is more difficult to
have a good relationship with people when there is a big difference in age and background.
Then, __3__Friends will stand closer together and will spend more time looking at each other than
ordinary friends. Smiles and soft voices also express friendliness, and it is because they may give the
wrong signals that shy people often have difficulty making friends. A friendly look with a wrong facial
expression can turn into an unfriendly stare, and nervousness may be wrongly understood as
unfriendliness.
Some relationships are a result of argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have
the same ideas and beliefs, the same opinion and interests. The more closely involved people become,
the more they depend on each other. And __4__ Equally, friends have to learn to make allowances for
each other, to put up with annoying habits, and to accept differences in opinion.
In contrast with marriage, __5__But the support and understanding that results from shared
experiences and affections does seem to create a close and lasting relationship.

A. we are usually friends with only a few.
B. many factors can affect friendship and relationship.
C. people want to do friends favors and hate to let them down.
D. argument and discussion can improve personal relationships.
E. we consider things like age, race, looks, economic and social status, etc.
F. we pay attention to actual behavior, facial expression, and the way a person speaks.
G. there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the relationship between two people.
