I bring Rose home five years ago. My neighbor Mrs. Black fell in love with her immediate she saw her. She was such lovely dog, after all. Rose also seemed to like Mrs. Black. Two years ago, however, Mrs. Black got cancer. Having been treating in hospital, she decided to receive treatment at home. Since my husband and I were busy in our work, we seldom went to see her. Three months ago, Mrs. Black died. To our surprised, her husband came to thank to us for keeping Rose one day. He said in the past several months, Rose went to accompany his wife every day before my husband and I went to work. With she around, his wife felt so warm and wasn't in so much pain. I never knew that. That Rose did was really heartwarming.

【1】bring brought

【2】immediate immediately

【3】such 后面加 a

【4】treating treated

【5】busy 后面in with

【6】surprised surprise

【8】before after

【9】sheher

【10】That What

【5】busy 后面in with 考查固定搭配。形容词短语be busy with sth忙于某事。

短语to our surprise让我们惊讶的是,其中介词to的后面要接名词surprise。

【8】before after 考查连词。

My neighbor Mrs. Black fell in love with her immediate she saw her.

【10】That What 考查主语从句。

To get to the tennis court, Conner Stroud has to push his wheelchair there.

The 15-yea-old from North Carolina, US was born without legs. But when he picks up his racquet(球拍) and begins to hit a ball, you quickly see that the young man just want to win.

Stroud began playing tennis at age 5 at the small tennis club his parents own. For years, he played against able-bodied players by putting rubber on the stumps (残余部分) of his legs. Though he was a foot (30.48cm) or two shorter than many of the players he played against, he won a number of matches. He became well-known enough that he got to meet Rafael Nadal, his favorite player at the US Open in 2013.

“The most important thing is that he’s happy,” Nadal told reports about Stroud after that 15-minute meeting. “He’s playing tennis... That’s a great example of being happy even if life doesn’t give you everything.”

Stroud started playing wheelchair tennis at 13 and now he is No 1 in the US.

Earlier this summer, he played for the US in the world’s biggest junior wheelchair team tennis event --- the World Team Cup. He played six matches and won five of them as the US won the cup for the first time since 2000.

Teenage players can often get disappointed and angry. Racquets sometimes get thrown. Players shout at themselves after missed shots. Stroud never does that.

I just try to stay positive,” Stroud said. “After every point, I try to say I’m going to win the next point, or the next game, or the next game, or the whole match.

There’s always room to be positive . You can always win another time.”

People in the western state of California who are in the United States illegally can now request a driver's license. The law went into effect on January l. California is not the first American state with such a law, but it has the largest number of illegal immigrants. More than a million people began to request licenses shortly after the new state law went into effect. Among them was Christian Alvarado. Mr. Alvarado entered the United States from El Salvador eight years ago without permission from the U.S. government. Some call such people "illegal immigrants." Others call them "undocumented immigrants".

Mr. Alvarado thinks it so exciting, for he has been waiting for the license for a long time. But some are worried that their personal information will be used to find them and deport them. Armando Botello is a spokesman for the California Department of Motor Vehicles, or DMV. He says people should not be afraid, for such information will not be shared.

The new licenses are the same as licenses given to citizens except that they have the words "Federal Limits Apply". That means the license cannot be used to travel on an airplane or enter a federal building. Ana Garcia, working at the Central American Resource Center, says some illegal immigrants fear those words will be used to abuse them. Civil rights groups say the police and others will not.

Dan Schnur, a political scientist at the University of Southern California, said that the main argument against the new law is that it rewards illegal behavior. But Professor Schnur argued that young, white Americans generally support immigration reform, including giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants

"It's simply because they grew up in a much more multicultural society than their parents or their grandparents did." Professor Schnur says he believes the changes in beliefs about illegal immigrants that have taken place in California will spread throughout the United States.

【1】Why did the new law make Mr. Alvarado excited?

A. Because he can request a driver's license.

B. Because he became a legal immigrant of California.

C. Because he got his driving license as an illegal immigrant.

D. Because a law went into effect for the new immigrants.

【1】What is the difference of the new licenses compared to those given to citizens'?

A. The words “Federal Limits Apply” will abuse illegal immigrants

B. They can't be used to travel on an airplane or enter a federal building.

C. They can be used to act against the police and other people.

D. With the words "Federal Limits Apply", immigrants can enjoy special rights.

【1】What’s the public's attitude towards the new law released on January l in California?

A. supportive B. negative

C. neutral D. controversial

When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation. I suggested that they should stay at “bed and breakfast” houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.

“We didn’t stay at bed and breakfast houses,” they said, “because we found that most families were on holiday.” I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought “VACANCIES” meant “holidays”, because the Spanish word for “holidays” is said “vacaciones”. So they did not go to house where the sign outside said “VACANCIES”, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to houses where the sign said “NO VACANCIES”, because they thought this meant people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels.

We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word “DIVERSION” means “fun”. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word “DIVERSION” on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hole.

English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris when someone offered me some more coffee, I said “Thank you” in French, I meant that I would like some more, however to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that “Thank you” in French means “No, Thank you”.

【1The author’s Spanish friends wanted advice about _______.

A. some funny English stories

B. finding places to stay in England

C. driving their car on English roads

D. going to England by car

【2】The author suggested that they stay at “bed and breakfast” because _______.

A. it would be convenient for them to have dinners and live

B. it would be much cheaper than staying in hotels

C. they would be able to practice their English in the house

D. there would be no problem about finding accommodation there

【3“NO VACANCIES” in English means _______.

A. no free rooms B. free rooms

C. not away on holiday D. they don’t live

A. take the road and you will be excited

B. have a lot of fun and enjoy yourself

C. find that the road is blocked by crowds of people

D. have to take a different road
